Rona in 2Point4 Children - 'The Girl' in Who Dares Wins
I've been a working actor since graduating from the University of Bristol and I'm probably best known for playing Rona in the BBC hit comedy series '2point4 Children', as well as the many different female (and sometimes male) characters that I played on Channel 4's first late night comedy sketch show 'Who Dares Wins'.
You may also have seen me in a number of family dance videos and sketches created by my daughter Abi Clarke @abiclarkecomedy
I'm slowly archiving all of the videos I have of the work I've done on TV and film starting with 'Who Dares Wins'. '2Point4 Children' is restricted by copyright but follow the link below to see all episodes on IPlayer.
I'm currently in a stage version of the Channel 4 90's topical comedy 'Drop the Dead Donkey' which is touring the country. See link below for venues and tickets

Julia's always been a star in my opinion ❤
Brilliant! Thanks for posting these gems. 😂❤️👍
You were / are a brilliant actress, Julia. For what it's worth, I think you should've been a huge star. I guess you'll just have to make do with being highly talented. x
Always brilliant to see these again after all of these years. Thank you for uploading them.
Ha ha. Nice one.
'Why don't you go and catch some REAL criminals?' They love it when you say that!
I love the Teenage Werewolf sketch.
I’m surprised Barry can produce any swimmers with speedos that small and tight 😂
LOL
Bobbies on the beat, CSE's........those were the days! 😅❤
Latin, inkwells and free milk 😂
@@julia_hillswow. You must have gone to a posh school, Julia 😅❤
This was almost as funny as a Cancer diagnosis.
That was a beautiful reading, Julia.
thank you - it's a lovely poem that always makes me smile 😀
My parents had a slightly odd neighbour in the 1980s who cut out and saved all Franklin's cartoons from The Sun and stuck them into a series of scrapbooks. He also had all the Fred Basset books. This sketch reminds me of the strange old sod.
there's nowt as queer as folk 😬
I’m not kidding, the first time I saw this sketch, there was a continuity announcer talking in the last part of the song, not letting me hear the last verses. I’m pretty sure the announcer in question was THAT MAN.
oh gawd don't you just hate that!
Rory getting tongue-tied. There's a first! 😊❤
yes - I'm amazed we all didn't fluff far more often. There really weren't many retakes
I love the Chaplin sketches. ❤
they were one of my favourites too. So well made and seemingly authentic 😀
Brilliant series.
thank you! It was a lot of fun to make.... as far as I can remember 😂
@@julia_hills I still have “flash backs” Tony’s clothes being stolen, Kevin and Wang Wang and of course the coffee advert.
@@clivequinn8978 ha ha oh goodness yes .. the coffee advert! 😬
Crocodile clips. Reminds me of a school, science lesson 😊❤
ha ha yes that and bunsen burners and a van de graaf generator 🤣
The Shipping Forecast sketch is bloody brilliant, I love how quickly it escalates. The shocked reaction from the audience to the headbutt... *chef's kiss* I imagine hearing that made you feel like a darts player after throwing a perfect 180.
I'm not very good with props so that sketch was a bit of a challenge for me but yes the reaction was fab - I used to love the shocked reactions to outrageous stuff 🤣
@@julia_hills Kenneth Williams wasn't good with props either. There's a scene in one of the Carry On films where he has to hand someone a pint of beer and he handles it like a priceless antique.
@@FreeTVEngland I feel his anguish 😂
Thank you Julia another 20 pence clenched 😂
It's a 2 pound coin now with inflation 🤣
😅
Has anyone tried that method of self defence and know if it works? asking for a friend of course…😏😂
I have often resorted to the trusted Glasgow kiss in challenging situations (please excuse lazy stereotype) 😂
Dolph Lundgren Top💯
I hold my hand up... I was the lemon who went around every record shop in town asking if they had Who Cares Wins by Julia Hills. I'm over it now. I still want that shirt Jimmy's wearing in the final sketch though, that is very me.
😂😂
Phil wrote some great songs for this show.
He's such a talented man
@@julia_hills You are all very talented.
@@frankowalker4662 thank you 🙂
Thank you so much for uploading these. I've been trying to find copies on DVD, VHS or even Betamax. But they don't seem to exist. 🤔 Subbed.
That's a pleasure. Sadly I believe Channel 4 erased all the tapes a while back and home collection VHS transfer on youtube is all we've got 😔
@@julia_hills That's very sad news. But at least we have these.
Excellent comedy aside, can we take a moment to appreciate that brilliant Pinball Wizard bank advert at 11:44?
Very impressive - pre CGI and all that as well
Honestly, how did you all manage to keep a straight face throughout this show?! 😂 it must have been so much fun!
I think i was always so concentrated on trying to remember all the lines that I didn't have time to think about cracking up 🤣
@@julia_hills It was genuinely a winning combination, you all worked well together - every pause, every word, the body language, the facial gestures, every reaction was just spot on 👌🏼 I’m not sure anyone could match that today so 👏🏼
@@lynneharper3233 Thanks Lynne 😀
You won't remember this, Julia, but I once sent you a letter when you were in Who Dares Wins and you replied. Many thanks! You made a teenage kid very happy. 🙂
Ha ha, I'm so glad to hear that 😀- you're welcome
Thanks for the upload 😀 👍
it's a pleasure 🙂
I used to love Who Dares Wins - are there episodes on KZread?
Thank you - yes there are quite a few episodes on KZread - I'm posting all that I have on VHS so scroll back for the full episodes and there are other accounts that have got some great content
Happy bank holiday, Julia ❤
Thank you - a happy bank holiday to you too 🙂
I heard Richard Osman referring to a producer at HIGNFY going to the States to help with an upcoming American version called Jimmy Mulville - is it the same guy from WDW?
@@thebagelsproductions Yes, Jimmy Mulville moved away from writing and performing to become a full-time producer in the early 90s. He runs Hat Trick Productions.
Have never been able to look at a Panda without thinking of Who Dares Wins. Didn't they once get into trouble with the Broadcasting Authority for some of the skits?
Ha ha me neither and I can't imagine anyone taking issue with these two cuddly balls of fun😀
Julia, it's such a privilege to see you here and responding to comments (if it is indeed, you!). Can you please tell us how the WDW troupe came together. You all had your individual strengths and I don't think the show would have worked if any one of you had been missing. I appreciate that the original line-up for the pilot was different, but it did not work half as well. Please, tell.
Thank you! - yes it's me, although I have to admit to my husband helping me with digitising the content and 'clipping it up'. It's difficult to remember the exact mechanics of how we all ended up together and I honestly don't know how Phil and Tony came on board, but, for me, I put it all down to the Edinburgh fringe of 1977 and being in a revue with the Bristol Revuenions from Bristol Uni at the same time that Jimmy and Rory (who were in Cambridge Footlights) were scouting for a girl who could sing for the germination of an idea that they had for a comedy sketch show. It took 2 or 3 years for WDW to be realised and a pilot was made that I wasn't in, before I got the call and the rest his history 😀
Brilliant series.
Probably the best episode of WDW ever. Every single sketch is a winner.
Thank you - I think we were really hitting our stride by then
What was Cliff Michelmore doing in the audience? (Right of screen)
Ha ha ha yes he was a big fan of the show 😂
Do a Google image search for 'Dawlish pandas' and you'll see life-size statues of Terry and Wang Wang in a Devon village ☺
WDW spoilt pandas for me forever. Every time I've watched videos of the real things since, it's impossible not to see them as comedy actors in costume🤭.
Ha ha that's exactly the same for me. They really were quite iconic 😂😂
Is there any evidence they moved onto making Prosecco with their added ingredient? Might explain why I can barely stand when I have more than 5 glasses… too much anti-freeze of course 🤔😂
I can neither confirm nor deny this rumour 😂
Simon Groom 😂❤
Well done, Philip, for not choking 😅 Must be a 'Food and Drink' parody, Julia? ❤
It's quite worrying watching this back. He really goes for it doesn't he?
Dear Points of View. Why oh why oh why hasn't there been a DVD release of all the episodes of Who Dares Wins...? Me and my crowmies would love to see it again.
Sadly I think Channel 4 deleted all the tapes and salvaged VHS recordings is all we've got 😒
@@julia_hills depressing, it was important, the first post pub tv, the first time tv was regularly dangerous, which leads onto The Word. Love looking at it now, with the camera looking back at the audience, interesting and ground breaking at the time. Everybody was great in it, a proper ensemble sketch show which we now hardly ever get, as its all crappy cheap panel shows (with no visual content and should be on radio) but then how independent production companies have ruined comedy is another topic :D
@@42Crows This is so true. Looking back it really was quite uniqie and a real shared experience with the audience - you're right about the camera aspect - it cast the audience as players for an at home audience and they were as much a part of the performance as us. I can't think of many other shows other than saturday morning kids tele and The Word, as you say, that did that. My daughter's a stand up comedian and sketch writer and she is convinced there is room for a show like this now, but would anyone be brave enough to make it? I doubt it
@@julia_hills I mean I'd welcome a return of the format, it was something different. Get you guys in for guest appearances every now and then? But it wouldn't work with well known names, you need another ensemble cast of borderline unknowns. But that doesn't wash in this world of cheap repetitive tour promotion pieces dressed up as "panel shows" - which due to a lack of a visual component should be on radio anyway. And the audience seem to be happy with what is basically the same thing week after week.
This reminds me of that bit in Iain Banks' Espedair Street where the backing singer says she can't bring herself to kill earwigs because they look like baby armadillos.
at the risk of sounding like an insect pedant - aren't those woodlice? 🤣
@@julia_hills My whole life has been a lie!
@@FreeTVEngland 😂😂
You look fabulous in that blue, Julia.
thank you - I kept that outfit and it was still in my wardrobe until v recently 😀
Quick question, does anyone in England call earwigs forky tails?! Or is it just us 😂
Never heard that one.
Forky Tails, I confirm that I also call them that. In Scotland
@@thebagelsproductions just wondering if we should be proud of ourselves or not 😂🏴
@@lynneharper3233 if I'm 100% honest I call them forky tailies 🤣🤣 & I'm proud of it

Filthy job and you were just a kid 😆
@@julia_hills Well I was 30, but as I'm a bloke I get older I don't grow up.
They still go on like that now in police dramas!
@@JehanineMelmoth police drama script writing's a tough job, but someone's got to do it 😂
Loved the swerve in this sketch... and it was a context well overdue for satirising 😆

Juliet Benedicto
thank you - Juliet Benedicto was the closest I ever got 😄
Was this your audition for 'The Bill' Julia? 😅❤
Yes it was - they said I was too naturalistic 😄
2:10 what did you know back then Mr. Robinson?
I've been looking for these for years. I was a massive fan of the show. Watched every episode and was sad to see it end. Why has C4 never released these on DVD? Has the cast never considered a reunion show? The 'Absolutely' comedy team reunite every few years or so, so why not Who Dares Wins. Glad to see you here and well Julia, you were great on the show.
Thank you! - I'm so glad you've found the archive 😆- sadly I believe Channel 4 have deleted all the tapes and yes it would be lovely to do a reunion but everyone went in such different directions after this it'd probably only be me and Rory who'd be up for it. 😂
