I'm an oilers fan and I'm a big mcleod fan, but I think Jeff Jackson made a great trade. It's smart because when McDavid and draisaitl's contracts are up, they have a talented young guy to play with. While this is an overpayment by the Sabres, I can understand why they made this trade. 1. They got a player who they can insert into the lineup right now and fills in a need of a 3rd line center in McLeod who is an upgrade over Krebs. 2. While Savoie was drafted in the top 10 of the ‘22 Draft, he basically got jumped by other prospects in the system since his draft year by guys like Benson, Levi, and even Kulich. Also when looking at the Sabres roster overall, where do you even put him in the lineup?

Arvidsson only played 18 games last year, probably going to be injured again this year. Oilers need big skilled.players if they want to return to SFC again
@@davehorsemanSmaller guys have been showing they can perform in playoffs so size is not everything. Also you need lot more sweeteners for Nurse somebody even considering it.
@juuhan4892 small players have not been on the playoff winning teams. Stanley cup winning teams in the last 5 years have had no players smaller than 6 foot tall. The smaller players can't last thru 4 rounds of intensified hitting hockey. Oilers need big elite players if they want to win it all
I feel this trade has the potential to be a win win. Buffalo losses a highly talented prospect for help now. But Savoie was jumped by multiple prospects in the sabres pipeline that doesn't include his injury concerns as well. The sabres shore up a position of need with a young cost effective player as well. I also don't think they need McLeod to contribute a ton offensively either.
I'm honestly curious if Matt Savoie can make the opening night roster for Edmonton. It may be a little early just yet, but if he can perform better in training camp than guys like Connor Brown or Mattias Janmark, he can possibly crack the roster for the Oilers
Savoie’ll get the opportunity to take a spot. It’s all up to him. I’d prefer he gets some reps in Bakersfield then bring him up mid season. There’s no pressure for him to make the team. If he cracks opening night, it’s great for him. If not, it’s valuable development time that’s still beneficial for him and the team.
Tin foil hat: Savoie asked for a trade. That’s the only explanation I can think of.
Both players were expendable. Buffalo has a lot of smaller skilled prospects. They needed a #3 center. They overpaid, but the logic behind it makes sense.
Buffalo wants to push to make the playoffs this year, and having another top 9 contributor NOW instead of a year or so later is something they need for that. They have enough good prospects that they don't mind getting rid of a future second-liner. Simple as that.
Still horrible asset management. I would want at least an extra 2nd rounder on top of getting McLeod, but I wouldn't have given up on savoie to begin with.
@@chrischris3099 I don't think anyone would have given that then. A few days after the trade, I saw it mentioned that Savoie wasn't valued very highly by other GMs. Don't remember where I saw it though, it might have been a link to an SN article posted on reddit?
@mahockey3 I don't think very highly of McLeod. At best he's a solid 3rd line centre. Savoie has potential to be a top 6 winger and it's not like he had a down year in the juniors. Helped his team to the memorial cup.
@@chrischris3099, 3rd line center is what we needed, with speed and penalty killing capabilities. We have a good top 6 as well as some good talent in the pipeline.
Mcleod is very good, defensivly put up 30 points playing under 15 mins a night and no pp. If he becomes a little more physical and gets more ice time, I don't think a 50 point two-way center is out of his reach for him. But edmonton made out like bandits still. Savoie should slot into the top 6 in a year or 2 and put up those numbers in his sleep
Yeah but he played a TON on Draisaitl's wing. He'll never get 2nd line time with a guy like Drai again. Enjoy his 10 goals and extremely soft play for 2.1 mil.
I'm an oilers fan and I'm a big mcleod fan, but I think Jeff Jackson made a great trade. It's smart because when McDavid and draisaitl's contracts are up, they have a talented young guy to play with. With Henrique being the 3rd line center there isn't much room for Ryan McLeod outside of the 4th line, so he won't improve much. Best of luck to him in Buffalo.
Plus, Derek Ryan is cheaper and isn't much of a drop off as your #4 center.
Sabres could have had him in the AHL, or trade him for a top 4 dman/ top 6 winger, mcleod is basically a 4th line center, he can't even drive play and like 80% of his points came cause he played as a winger next to draisaitl
sabres have 20m in cap space. if you want a 3c, go buy one at the deadline dont trade for it
@@BeserkerEarl They currently have $13 Million in cap space. But more importantly, they can’t get one via free agency as players are not interested in joining a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 13 years.
@@michaelkerber3337 He would’ve been in the AHL this upcoming season no matter what. But based on what I’ve seen regarding this matter, Savoie wasn’t even a prospect other GMs had interest in when it came to trade discussions with the Sabres.
@@ABobeck94 says who? i haven't heard that from any insiders and Sabres were the ones that came to Oilers with that offer they didn't even try to lowball Oilers to get mcleod they just offered the overpay right away.
McLeod is just a David kampf tbh
This Sabres offseason so far just reeks of desperation from a GM that was told he has to make playoffs or he's done. Like McLeod but the value deficit for the Sabres is just crazy
Senators.....lol
@@RIS3N1 😂 lol
we have the best prospect pool in hockey and still do..we addressed needs, plain and simple..you want to know desperate?? the Sens getting their ass kicked by Detroit in that DeBrincat deal..thats desperate lol
@@RoamHockey ya it was just like this move by the Sabres. It's great to have "the best" prospect pool but if you then trade them all for mid 3rd liners all you have is a mid 3rd line so that's not good is it. Sens got Ullmark from the ADB trade so was it really bad?
As a Sabres fan, I agree with you. I don’t believe this trade was a logical, rational decision made by the GM. It was probably pressure being put on him by the owner to win, make the playoffs and put fans back in the seats this season-or you’re fired. Lindy Ruff probably also told the Sabres what he would need to win right now, and that included a 3C, but not a prospect. As far as asset management, it’s a horrible trade for Buffalo, but after the draft and the start of FA, we learned that almost no one wants to come to Buffalo. That’s just the reality of the situation, whether Sabres fans want to admit it or not. Even with the additions of McLeod and Ullmark, I believe the that (on paper) the Sabres and Sens dont make the playoffs this year.
I was camping when this happened and came back and saw it. I genuinely cannot understand how buffalo thought this was a good trade.
Such an overreaction. Savoie doesn’t even have a spot on the Sabres roster this season, and next season. McLeod is a serviceable 3C
@@cozscavas a Sabres fan it’s an under reaction lol. We fucked up big time, even if he wasn’t gonna crack the line up this season (he DEFINITELY would be making the team next season), his trade value was through the roof
@@camerona6644 Im also a Sabres fan and am tired of "potential." We need to get into the playoffs this year. Not 2 more years from now. It was a sacrifice, but we need to be in the playoffs this year. GMKA is trading like his job depends on it. because it does.
@@camerona6644Buffalo isn’t going to wait 2 years and needs seasoned players for a push to playoffs . McLeod brings speed and is a center. Exactly what they need . They are deep with prospects, no worries here.
@@camerona6644his trade value was low. Teams wanted all of the other Sabres big name prospects over him
He IS a two timer, and now he can get with Fabbri, cause they traded him too soon too! Those damn St. Bluis Loose.. They've traded everybody away since they been a team!! .. Ah shit! Now Fabbri is someplace else!! Haahahaaa
Tarasenko, Kane, and debrincat. Now that's an insane lineup
Ah. Another person that underestimates Tarasenko's defensive capabilities. I mean, he's not going to be a Selke contender, but he is better than most people give him credit for.
J.T is gonna have a career year this year venturing Terisinkshow, and Showtime!!!!
I’m tired of being excited for this team from FA, idc anymore, I want some fucking results! Playoffs or bust! This team has been garbage for 7 years, it’s time to see some fucking progress!
Great how the Wings make cap space, maybe there`s another goalie around they can sign? Would need another 2 to play the first goalies only line in the NHL!
I’ll take T over fabbri for another 750 any dolly of the week.
