Where can I purchase a 3 in 1 diamond triangular file?
Hello, what liquid you are using?
Yes
Can you use wd40 to keep the diamond file from clogging?
What’s the type of abrasive used in the mirror paste?
After using a variety of pastes and rouges over 30 yrs I decided to develop a product which gave a remarkable mirror polished edge but quickly. There was much trail and error, over three years until I found the right mix and consistency. Unfortunately the formula is a secret otherwise it would simply be copied as happens in the industry. So , sorry, cannot tell you. Hope you understand.
Theres similarities with abortions, drugs, and many other items. Did you know one of the biggest sources of poor American health is made in Wisconsin? Ffs John you're starter than this mouthbreather take
Or just rub 2 new diamond stones over each other with water or lubricant like you use
Hi, would this process work the same for a cermet carbide diablo blade for metal? Thanks.
Someday, a salesman will actually demonstrate a dull blade, then run thru his demo and demonstrate it is now sharp. Sigh.
Well Mr Shea , a couple of points. if you had taken the time to look at some of my other videos on using a diamond steel you will see that I start by dulling a knife on a piece of wood first and then showing that it cannot cut through paper. Then I run through the demonstration and then show the knife is sharp…. SIGH !! Secondly I am NOT a salesman ! A salesman ( by definition) sells products to the general public. I do not sell any of my products to the general public. I am a designer of product and importer / exporter. Finally…. For any other doubting Thomas’ out there, if you need any clarification or proof of how effect these products are then I suggest you contact my local butchers ( Morris Butchers of Leicestershire) who use these steels and diamond whetstones at the Wigston branch. I am sure you will agree Butchers need sharp knives and continually need to sharpen them… Sigh ….! Thank goodness I’ve virtually retired from all this malarkey 🤪
Thank you for sharing your expertise of this trade where it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find such skill to learn from.
Great tip. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Is slicing paper really a good demonstration of sharpness? I've got knives that I can blunt on a brick and they will still slice clean through paper with ease just by means of their thin blade geometry.
It’s a great visual example of sharpness . I used to shave my arm or legs when demonstrating around the world but unfortunately gave this up as it didn’t grow back fast enough !
If a knife has very thin geometry it will still slice paper even when blunt but the cut won’t be clean and the edges of the cut will show lots of rough fibers. A properly sharp knife, even if thicker will show a cut with cleanly separated fibers.
@@temhawpin yes thats true but the point is a knife with good geometry and dull edge will cut actual ingredients better than knife with razor edge and bad geometry. also the point is slicing copy paper is fun but its not really showing anything, the reason we used to do this was to check for microchiips in the edge without visual. you can feel them. that was the idea.
Right on buddy. Alternatively you could spend 2x or more on a higher quality diamond plate like the Japanese atoma products. Then again, do you spend $70 on a single atoma, or do you get a whole set of Chinese diamond plates for like half that price? It's a valid question. Personally I got both cuz I like to compare stuff and I'm not really concerned with the price I just want to see how stuff works and what's the best for a given application. The cheap Chinese plates work just fine, nothing wrong with them what so ever. Break em in like demonstrated and you're golden.
One of the best diamond plates available is sold by Rob Cosman on his web site. They are both double sided 300/1000 grit and the premium one is precision flat +/- 0.0015” . I used the Atoma stones extensively about 25 yrs ago and were one of my main considerations when designing my range of diamond products which focused on flatness / precision / durability and double sided products which negated the need of investing in single sided stones. I would dispute your opinion that the Atoma stone is of a higher quality than the Rob Cosman stone. There are however a lot of cheaper Chinese sets of stones out there starting from around $30 a set and the old adage that “you get what you pay for” is so true. If money is no object than I suggest you check out the Cosman diamond plate.
@@jamesbarry6431 I looked it up. I'm skeptical about spending that much on a diamond plate, but the next time I need one I'm gonna give it a shot.
Does that have a lifetime warranty? Nice I just got one.
I have literally took possession of a diamond stone. (thanks Hermes /Evri for the loooonng delay). I'm gonna do this right now. Cheers for the info!
Well done very well done thank you great information . Today is my first time using a diamond sharpening stone . Lot’s of information from he who know.
Thank you for your kind comment, appreciated.
Could one use an old whet stone to break in the new diamond stone? It would wear down the old rock heavily, but I don't have any further use for it...
You could use the coarse if used with no pressure however you will find that you will severely clog up the surface so make sure you have plenty of James Barry Sharpening lapping fluid handy as this will keep it unclogged.
What brand of stones do you use/recommend?
I use Titman Edge stones from the James Barry Sharpening Collection I designed and supplied them to companies such as Classic hand tools , Rob Cosman , Woodsmith USA, Woodworkers workshop etc for more than 25 yrs. if you want to purchase one let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Matey how do I buy ur leather block
Go to Phipps Leather and Wood web site and you’ll find the double sided leather block for sale there, mention that I have put you in contact with them 👍
@@jamesbarry6431 I got from every tool now gutted as the other one looks better is it she'll I cancel it or r they ok
@@togetherweperspire6379 relax ! Phipps leather and Wood make them for Everytool ! Same quality , all hand made it the UK. Recommend you get some of the mirror paste to use on it, it’s awesome. You can see it working on my video clips online or on James Barry Sharpening on Facebook or internet. I no longer supplyTrend with ANY of my products so getpaste from Phipps or Everytool. Enjoy.JB
do this when you got a tooth ack l0l
Possibly a silly question, but what do you use to clean off the stone after initializing it? I have an old dish cloth, but I'm worried about cloth fibres getting trapped in the diamonds.
Use Titman edge lapping fluid which will prevent any rust issues and helps keep the stone clean. Then every two or three months use a drawing office type white soft rubber / eraser this will clean out any excess crap which has accumulated and clean it thoroughly. You are correct in thinking a dish cloth is a no no ! 😂
@@jamesbarry6431 The edge lapping fluid is in the shopping basket :) So can you just leave the lapping fluid on the stone to dry or do you need to wipe it off at all? Thanks a million for the help! And for the videos, I've been learning loads. The eraser tip is a new one on me.
@@russano22 just wipe it off with a cloth - you do not need apply too much
What's the 'fluid'? Water?
It’s Titman Edge lapping fluid a must for diamond abrasive stones Available from Phipps leather and wood, Everytool, Woodworkers workshop, classic hand tools.... this is the original fluid I introduced into the market 15 yrs ago Beware of all the inferior copies that are now around... Hope that helps.
Man asks seller "How much is your amazing diamond stone" Seller replies "Well there's 50ct of diamonds, so to you, today £375,765.99" Man "I'll take two, but don't tell the Mrs"
that pressure is great for mirrors and convexing. if you want american scary sharp you lighten up and use the microscope haha.
Hi. does honing fluid contain oil please. I didn't know if i could use oil on diamond plates.
Great video James, so pleased to be supplying your fantastic products at Wood Workers Workshop.
Thanks Peter.
@@jamesbarry6431 Would you recommend this for chisels and plane blades?
@@Brigidz I would suggest a slightly larger diamond hone like the 6” x 2” (300/1000) grit or the Classic professional 8” x3” Ideally you need this size for flattening the backs first You can get them from Woodworkers Workshop, classic hand tools, Everytool, Titman Edge. There are plenty of videos around of me using these two stones.
All of the products that I use in my videos have been rebranded as Titman Edge Diamond Products and are available from the following superstars, Simon Hope Woodturning, The Tiny Turner (Emma Cook) , Ed Oliver Woodturning, Classic Hand Tools , Everytool, Beaver Bushcraft, USA Jimmy Clewes , Cindy Drozda , Magma Austria, Colin Parkinson and Troy Grimwood in New Zealand and Australia.
Nice video James. Good to see you back in action 😈 You need to get my down as a stockist now I'm all up and running! Xxxx
Of course I shall Emma. Xx
Excellent demo James ... you can't beat the best 🙂 Cheers Mike
Mike Waldt thanks Mike.
Hi James its great stuff got some off you at harogate couple of years ago cheers Ian
I am glad you like it Ian
Hi James Barry✨ Awesome video 👊👊
Thanks , more next week
Hi James sorry to be a bit dim i bought the credit card with 600 and 300 with a hole in it which side is the hole on when sharpening with 300 grit ? cheers well impressed by the way
My credit cards which I supply do not have a hole in it ! Also each side is etched with the grit size (as in the video) and they are 1.60 mm thick and these cheaper ones are neither etched or of the same thickness. You can purchase the ones demonstrated in the video from , Classic hand tools, Edgepro tools, Simon Hope woodturning, Ed Oliver, WoodRat, FT tools, Beaver Bushcraft and many others. I am glad you are impressed but In my opinion you would be staggered by the difference in quality .
@@jamesbarry6431 Cheers James this is genuine trend card bought this before i saw you on youtube another woodturner recommended them ,do Amazon sell your 300 grit cards ? as i use it mainly for HSS steel and no Carbide tipped gear cheers
Granville Bennet if you fundamentally need it for Woodturning I would suggest the 180/300 grit designed predominantly for turners. Amazon prices seem a bit erratic ? Should be in the region of £20.00 + vat Try Ed Oliver Woodturning - can buy online at his site Hope that helps.
@@jamesbarry6431 I found one of your 300 grit stones stamped 300 on it £26 seems id be better with the 180/300 stone
@@jamesbarry6431 just seen the 180/300 red card on Ed Olivers site cheers ill go for that also looks a lot thicker and stamped both sides
I bought excellent handbook from woodprix website. Just google woodprix and make some dust.
What's the stone he's flattening there? Is that a Norton India?
I'm a beginner and I flat out cannot tell the difference between a bowl gouge and a spindle gouge. I'll show you a link of what Hurricane is selling as a bowl gouge and every time I see a wood turner on KZread, their bowl gouge has the long "wings" on it. Do they sell bowl gouges where everyone has to re-grind the wings onto it??? www.amazon.com/Hurricane-Turning-Tools-Woodturning-Inches/dp/B008AVM7W0?ref=dp_atch_ds
Leslie Kendall to be perfectly honest I have never heard of Hurricane tools ? My specialty is sharpening by hand and maintaining tools. As to what grind comes on which make of tool becomes a little like a lottery to me. You need to ask a professional Turner. If you are in the USA I recommend contacting, Jimmy Clewes, Morris Schlesinger or Cindy Drozda, in the U.K. Andrew Hall , Mike Waldt or Les Thorne , all of these guys are on Facebook or on KZread. Tell me I sent you !! Hope this helps.
"You do surprise me at times." LOL!!
Very helpful
And how would you sharpen a round insert?
check out my video clip How to sharpen a carbide insert m- basically exactly the same
You have another video about sharpening carbide inserts? Other than this one??
You don't have to sharpen the edge?
Jimmy, I watched the video and saw you had a Laguna 2436 in your shop. I am debating between the Laguna 2436 and the Powermatic 3520C. Only reason I considered the Laguna is the extra 4" of swing and 3 hp vs 2hp. What is your opinion? See you at our club in April.
Take my money... I want to turn like Jimmy
Enjoyed that James, very enjoyable video mate :) Cheers Mike
thanks for your help will find it again GT video 👍👍👍👍
Another very impressive product from your good self James. See you at Harrogate :) Cheers Mike
Mike Waldt cheers mate
found it thanks
Graham Thomas great
what was the name of the tool please thanks for your time 🐝🐤👍👍👍
Graham Thomas its the 6" tapered diamond 600 grit file sold by Trend Routing technology in U.K. Or USA part no. DWS/TF6/F or any Trend stockist, if you cannot find it , come back to me.
hi i was sold a 1500 card to shapen my round bit its not that good what grit can i use other that 1500
mike pruett Never heard of a 1500 grit ! Anyway you need to get a proper quality precision diamond card. Suggest the Trend one . Part no. DWS/CC/FC. Which is double sided 600 / 300 grit. 600 for carbide , 25 micron, 300 for any HSS 40 micron.
I always appreciate it when someone making a good video names the items they are using. In other words, tell me what to search for on a supplier's website, or ask for at the store. In this case I think you are suggesting a 600 grit diamond stone.
Tom Daoust yes my friend, the ideal grit for carbide is 600 grit. The product I am using is the Trend machinery Ltd. Precision credit card..1.6mm thickness the part no. Is DWSCCFC either check their web site or try Peachtree in Atlanta, Craft supplies, Some Woodcraft stores, Klingspor...or Amazon. Hope that helps !
I was in Klingspor yesterday. Wish I'd known I needed this. The store is about 80 miles from where I live, and it was just a 2 mile detour yesterday. Thanks for the info. I'll order online or get it next week as part of the same trip.
Tom Daoust good people at Klingspor, I should check by phone first that they have it in stock Double sided credit card 300/600 grit by Trend. They have been selling like hot cakes in the USA and some retailers are out of stock ?
Umm I didn't like this video
Will ,well, Willy, of the 60,000 + people who have viewed this video clip, there has got to be one or two who don't like it, so pleased you took the time to let me know.
