Hey, can you tell me a little about your canoe? What is the brand, how heavy, and how small does it pack down to?
Hey there @swalker723! Yea its a Pakboat "150" or a 15ft. The Brand is Pakboat, they are out of New Hampshire. I was on the fence till I messaged with the infamous Cliff Jakobson and he raved about them. It is light just at 50#, so not a light as a Kevlar one maybe. But it can go inside and airplane. I got it so I could travel with it if I wanted (I always travel with a boat these days) It packs down to the size of a large duffle maybe 3'H x 2'W kinda round in shape when packed. It seems to perform really well. Like other packable boats (inflatable IKs) it flexes in the waves. So this means you can load it according to the water you are running. Weigh down the ends for flat water, or center load it for White water and the hull will make more or less rocker. It also tends to flex up and over most waves rather than punching through and taking on water.. Its as durable as any good IK on the market which is to say pretty stout. Out in Colorado we run inflatables all over and down some tough rivers. I'd take this boat on any hard adventure. Also it is Really Really easy to patch in the field compared to a hard fiber boat.
@@ivanoutdoors awesome, thanks for the details! I've seen those at Canoecopia (my local annual paddlesports expo) but I didn't look very closely at them and could not remember the brand. I'll have to check them out next year. A little heavier than I was expecting but seems like it packs down well for travel and sounds like pretty good quality.
@@swalker723 I have wanted to go to Canoecopia for a while, need to make it up there.
@@ivanoutdoors if you ever go, probably bring a U-haul or something because there's a lot of good stuff there!
Awesome, any idea what layers those cliffs are comprised of?
Um... best as I can tell its all sedimentary sand stone layers. The next day we get up closer to them a bit more. Also some cool looking coal deposits further down, (day 2). And some "contemporary'" Petroglyphs.
Haha. Not a fan eh? herrrm
Fan of it all, wish I could join! Come docu an Appalachian run and we'll use banjos as paddles.
Man I'll come just to hear your new accent!
I actually hear less banjo than I expected.
Haha Day 2 the wind picked up at the end of the day, it was so strong I couldn't control the Canoe at times.
I love meat tacos
Nice Video
Thanks; but I know I have some work to do on the camera angle.
I was game to try and figure out where this was until I saw these numbers: "Pike National Forest includes 12,391 nearby mines-1,059 active and 11,332 closed." Might take more time than a cursory glance.....
haha yep, the whole front range was prospected somthing fierce back in the day. Thanks for watching.
CataRaft Looks so good. I want to be in there.
Thanks! I found a bad leak on a seam recently so its out of commission at the moment
@@ivanoutdoors Hope it will be in action soon
how sweettt
Love the CatRaft I don’t see any videos about them. I am looking to build one. Check your channel out hope to see more videos about the CatRaft
Yea I love them, so maneuverable and You can Flinstone if needed. I sprung a leak on a main seam so its down for a bit.
Ah yes, the Platte River, as some one once said, "To thick to drink, to thin to plow" But it looks like you had a good trip. I live up in Cheyenne.
Haha, I love that! Have you paddled much past Greely?
@@ivanoutdoors Nope, just fished it from the banks, when it was full. By August it will be a ghost of what is is now. And that saying, is from WAY back, Mid to late 1800's, when people first saw said "River" ;) Take care, stay safe.
I love the PakCanoe. It's nice to see you using one while you document your canoe trip. I use the 150T and I move the front seat to just aft of the center of the boat and paddle solo with it. I love the way it handles. The other nice feature of these PakCanoe's is how quiet they are. They are a skin on frame canoe but with modern materials and the fabric helps make for a very light and quiet canoe.
Yes! that is what I did too. i managed to fit the seat just aft of the center thwart, worked well enough but I was still trimmed aft a bit. But I'm growing up an 80# ballast for the bow. He'll be ready soon. The sound aspect is news to me. I haven't paddled a hard canoe in 20 years. But yea i"m very excited for this boat!
Have you read "Taking the Old Highway," by Brad Modesitt, 2008? The book chronicles the author and his brother's trip from Fort Collins down the Poudre, Platte, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans and beyond in 1993. Too bad that kind of river travel is prohibited in places these days....
Hey Thanks for the recommendation. I found a copy on Ebay and made an offer. Sounds like a book I need to read. Since the Platte is my home river I feel like I want to do something similar. Thanks for watching.
@ 12:45 that's Ensign United States Drilling location. It's looks like their support facility for their oilfield service (fracking) operations in Weld County.
Hey thanks, I thought it was oil but they looked different than I had seen before.
Learned a fun trick in the guide industry, if a guide is being a pill on a trip, have someone distract them and then have someone else spray and wipe everything on their boat down with 303. Then put back on and watch the fun
yea its slicker than gorilla snot.
Nice work man, great video!! I didn't capture enough of the hike down. Next time!
Wow! Exciting whitewater and beautiful drone shots! Subcribed✔️
Thanks! And the hard Whitewater we didn't run. That canyon has everything from class V on down. Come to CO and lets paddle!
I love when sibling pups sleep/rest in identical positions. My doggos do this too ❤
What the heck is that one man cataraft thing? Is that a DIY boat? Looks fun.
That is a Jacks Plastic Welding special. Thanks for watching.
It's called the "PackCat", and like Ivan said, it's a fairly special boat, haven't seen many other like it.
Fucking get a grip fire in any limit is more usethan your channel
Ive used my cheap 20$ amazon twig stove to boil water in 7 minutes. I bought it 3 urs ago. It looks just like the 100$ Solo Stove Mesa (SMH, who buys THAT?) I also have a twig grill, folds flat, has an ash pan, stick grate and adjustable height cooking grill. Made an awesome venison backstrap over pine twigs, took 15 min. No complaints except yes, you do have to feed them a lot of sticks. Or carry a little tub of wood pellets
Right on. I also would not buy the Solo twig stove. I’m glad you have good luck with yours and for cheap! The flat pack one was a gift and I was excited. In my field tests with them, and I’ve done several now, for myself they just take way too much attention. I believe a boil could be achieved in 7 min. But I have to much going on in camp to make that happen. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the concept of these. But I think the sweet spot is in a device that can burn enough wood to create an inertia of heat. At this level of stove the only advantage over a real fire is leaving less impact on a camp. I was using it as a “cooking fire” on the side to give it one last test before I gave up on it. I’m still on the hunt for a light weight but bigger one.
Call for a waaaaahmbulance.
This guy fucks
Its an everything stove use whatevers combustible. Candle wax or whatever
put the mount round your waist. much less bounce
A spring with cloth around it carabiner on both ends.
Well?
That not habitat, that forest fire kindling. Lighting hit that dead wood and half the forest goes up with it
It creates more habitat after it falls as well.
Sign nailed with nails😂
Ironically killed by the nails used to hang the sign.
Many, unfortunately one oak near my office came down naturally a couple years back now. Another just came down this winter… ground got too wet to hold it up during an ice storm. Both were well over 50 years old.
I've never seen a "wildlife tree" tag, but plenty of "witness" tags. Neat.
What does a “whiteness “ tag denote?
I live next to a national forest/state park and it’s illegal to mess with trees like that. The forest behind my house is protected as well. I love the wild life that is around! I love living like this
Yo live in a beautiful place
Excellent firewood
High bush cranberries
Awesome thanks!
Alaskan packrafting and khoomei? Love it!
I just put what sounds I like that I think will go with the footage. Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Nice run and great video! Love the throat singing! Perfect complement to some creekin' vids.
PacoFuckHead thanks. Really appreciate the feedback. And I love your YT name! Haha
Great end to a good trip. Thanks for sharing buddy!
Nice. I’d like to join you one of these times! Have you considered paragliding? I’m 3-years in and getting closer to my dream of Volbiv
YO John! Its been a while. I've been eyeing maybe getting into paragliding or paramotoring. But you should come paddle its more than a hobby at this point for me.
Awesome adventure and great video. Hope you guys enjoyed some well deserved beverage after this trip!
Thanks @@kentwilliams13 we sure did. The next day we repositioned to McCarthy and took in some of the Wrangles and paddled McCarthy Creek.
Im really wanting a packraft
You won’t regret it!
Really enjoyed the video and nice edit. I have a Forager too. I believe I have seen that you also have a smaller one person packraft, so how did the Forager perform on both the WW and the flats while paddling solo as compared to your smaller boats?
I do. It’s a Kokopelli Recon and I love it hay boat it’s such a tank and capable for anything I’ll want to run. The Forager, however, is just such a different tool. It was mildly adaptable to flat water, better than the Recon would’ve been. Could use a removable skege. On the WW it was very easy to maneuver solo. I’ve never paddled it with another paddler. This trip was the second time I had the forager on any white water of significance and each time I’ve been very happy with it. While it’s not a hard shell kayak, It certainly gets the job done as well as any other white water inflatable. I would definitely hang onto it if you have one.
And I’m glad you enjoyed it thanks for checking it out
@@kentwilliams13 will do! Thanks. TN is beautiful. Likewise hit me up if ever in CO. And I accidentally removed your last comment. Sorry about that. Fat fingers I guess.
nice vid! what brand are those canoes?
They are: green-> kokopelli; red-> Alpacka. #packrafts
Awesome work boys!! THanks for sharing!
Great video, thanks for posting. The canyon looks like it's in decent shape after the fire. Did you get a chance to fish? Do you thin the fishery was negatively impacted by the fire?
You know because it was exploratory for us we didn’t carry any extra gear like for fishing, but it looks like it would be excellent fishing. The vegetation along the bank is in really good shape. At the put in some lady tried chewing our ass, telling us that we weren’t allowed to go fishing down river. We politely ignored her as she held up traffic and nearly caused an accident.
I’m sorry I was confused. I thought you were commenting on my North fork of the Pouder video. But yes, there were people fishing. Occasionally the water looked really clear, and the banks looked in good shape, although there were some big washouts.
Nice!
Thanks man! working on the craft and the trade.
Poor dog is like, "OH GOD!" ...I am going paddle boarding with my dog today. This will be the first time for both of us, and my dog has never even seen a paddle board.
yea he was an avid paddling dog. Sure do miss him. Glad you enjoyed.
North Fork in Ovando Montana?
no... further south, way south. Where and what do you normally paddle?
Hey, really enjoyed this video- It was fun to see your process for eddying out and scouting those rapids, then taking turns going through. Good teamwork
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
