    @danienelphoto I did get very lucky. A cool large vintage camera case, with inside it: an OM-1 body with f1.8 50mm kit lens and an original Olympus leather casing, the Tokina lens from your video, a flasher, a 90s point-and-shoot camera and two film rolls. Booklets for everything included, everything in minty mint condition. It all feels semi-unused. Price: 75 euro. Not bad at all. Hope you'll have a similar score with your future OM!

    Had an intersting chat to the camera repair guy here... the problem with super fast lenses is that in order to get it tack sharp, the lens develops chromatic aberrations, and to get rid of that, you sacrifice sharpness wide open.

    @@danienelphoto yes, that’s interesting. I noticed that just a very minimal focusing change can change the appearance of longitudinal chromatic aberrations a lot. You might be right about sacrificing a bit of sharpness when needed. I will try to play with this aspect again.

    I do believe it is quite reasonable to expect good images, if your camera is in good condition. If the bellows are good and the lens clear, then one must just take care that the front "standard" is parralell to the film plane, and it should be ok. Also, the iris and shutter can give issues.

  • @danienelphoto
    @danienelphoto2 ай бұрын

    Hi Shawn! You get a FD-EF adapter for it. Some might list it as FD-EOS EF. There might be a link to one in the description. K&f Concepts makes a very good one and they can generally be had for about $50 or so (I am doing a quick currency conversion from my own currency!). Vitrox also makes good versions, quite cheap. PS - the T5 is a great body to use vintage lenses with. If you get some M42 mount lenses (screw mount), the M42-EF converter combo works amazing and is really small, so has very little influence on camera ergonomics. Cheap Takumar (any lenses in that range is great) or Pentacon lenses (50mm is great) , or some of the old Russian lenses (Helios or Jupiter - the 58mms are great) , are great for that body.

    Thanks for the review! Yes, the MD 50mm f/2 is a really nice lens. Only problem(s) for me are that it has a rather long minimum focus distance and only a six-bladed aperture. But for us $35, I can't really complain. I think that it handles chromatic aberration better than my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (the third version of the Canon Nifty Fifty) at similar apertures. But the Canon lens hadnles flare a bit better.

  • @danienelphoto
    @danienelphoto2 ай бұрын

    Yes, indeed. The longer focusing distance is a bit 'meh', especially compared to a Pentacon 50mm 1.8. The nifty fifties from Canon seem to suffer from inconsistent manufacturing. I have used ones that are lovely, and then the same lens, just another copy not good. Because I often use cheap vintage lenses, and they mostly have six blade apertures, I have started taking to it as a "feature" :)

    I have a C330 that I got from Japan during covid-times via eBay. I got the body and also from separate Japanese sellers, the 55mm and the 135mm lenses. The camera was described as "near mint" ... and it's reasonably clean ... but there is some "minor" chrome degradation/corrosion on the crank-side of the camera that did not appear in the eBay photos ! I told the seller about this in an un-heavy-handed way, and he replied politely but did not offer me any cash-back ... LOL ... anyway keep that in mind when buying on eBay (even from Japan) and going by the descriptions. Shipping back (return was possible) would have been too expensive from Canada to make that worthwhile. Offering me an eTransfer of part of the purchase price would have made more sense ... but I did not push for that. Oh, and I did not give a bad (as far as I can recall) eBay rating. I think I probably never did get around to giving him a rating.

    Man, it can be a gamble! My big concern is functionality with old cameras. I can handle a bit (even a lot!) of cosmetic wear, but if it is not working, I don't want it. It sucks when sellers "misrepresent" their wares, though. I buy local mostly, so it helps in that regard.

You will not be able to use higher ISO films comfortably. The lightmeter doesn't work without the battery, but for the average sunny day you will get results. Tx - interesting factoid - Hanimex had some of their lenses made by Practika in Dresden and Japanese manufacturers lkke SUN. So did many other more budget lens brands. So, in a way, there is a Dresden-Japan connection.

    This one I really liked. Well done man! I shot Delta 400 a while back, and I was a little disappointed about the lack of contrast as they kinda looked a little washed out. Now that I see yours it's pretty clear to me that it was most likely due to user error 😂 But regardless, perhaps it's worth pushing a stop or two? My favorite photo in this video was definitely the porch chairs at 4:17 - nice and clean shot. Also great to see your subscriber count is on a steady rise! Cheers

    Thank you so much. Yes, in South Africa, contrast is not a problem, because of the bright sunlight here, but I think pushing it a bit will definitely give you some extra oomph! Tx, I also like that chair shot, and normally it is not my type of thing at all!

    I have no idea why in Souf Efrika, you would use film! It's so expensive. I went digital in 2005! Dis mos lekker en goedkoop.Alles van die beste!

    Hi Jason, net so! I also went digital in 2005, I worked as a pro film shooter, so saw the promise of digital immediately, but shooting thousands of images per month for 2 decades now, on awesome digital cameras as a professional shooter, to please other people, and on strict deadlines and turnarounds, I enjoy the pace, uncertainty and nostalgia of film on my off-days! When money is tight, I just plonk a vintage lens on my digital camera and have fun that way. We are actually fortunate in South Africa. We don't pay much for processing and scanning (I have my colour film dev'd), we don't pay more for film, and we pay much less for vintage gear than guys in Europe and the States. ... but ultimately these are just mediums. Whatever floats one's boat! (Also, we spend much less than guys with mountain bikes or golfers for green fees!)

    @@danienelphoto Mother Goose, another “I went digital in 2005” here…🤪 350D in April 2005… But seriously, according to my memory film is cheaper now than it was then…? Digital is a convenient evil that will sadly never go away…unless we can use it as a gateway drug to get more people to shoot film?😂👍🏻

  • @danienelphoto

    No, I can't say that film is cheaper... I used to charge R125 per roll (35mm or 120 Kodak E100S E6) for film and processing to magazine clients. A 5 pack of E100S at Orms was around R220... Portra 160 was around the same. 5 pack of Portra is now almost R1800-ish.... Processing wasn't that much cheaper, though. Digital has its moments, for sure... and it is a gateway drug to film!

    I found this camera in my grandpa's stuff. It is in great condition, but I unlocked the lens once and since I've put it back on I can't unscrew it anymore, and the aperture lens doesn't move anymore (it stays fully open). What should I do ?

  • @danienelphoto
    @danienelphoto3 ай бұрын

    Hi - good find! The lens fits to the camera body with "bayonet" mount, so it doesn't "unscrew" (that is obviously if it is exactly the same camera :) ). It fits in with a solid "click". So when you hold the camera pointing the lens away from you, there is a button on the left of thr lens against the camera body that you press and you turn the lens. If this doesn't work there might be a bit of an issue there and I can't say unless I see it :). In terms of the aperture ring - it has an "A" setting (Again, this is if it is a 50mm Rikonon F2). If it is set on that, the aperture ring don't move, unless you press the small little button on the side of the aperture ring and then turn it. I hope this helps! Feel free to drop me a DM on my Insta @danienelphoto with pics/video and I will.see if I can be of assistance.

    @@danienelphoto Thank you for your answer ! Yes it really is this exact camera, but unfortunately I think it really is stuck, I've tried everything... I just don't want to risk breaking it so it's fine I'll just use it with the aperture open. I'm sure I will still be able to take nice pictures during my trip to Ireland in a few months. I even have a working Starblitz flash and I can't wait to try those out !

    The aperture "closes down" once you shoot, but stays open for composing, in its normal opration. See if itcloses down as the shutter fires?
