The Random Wrestling Review
The Random Wrestling Review
What else could the world need more in 2021, than yet another podcast featuring 3 white guys in their 30's talking about wrestling?! Actually a lot more, but we're hoping you'll settle for this. Ben, Tom and Sam are 3 long-time friends from Bristol who have each been watching wrestling for the last 30 years and here, each week, they will select a wrestling show from the past at random and then talk about it. It's a heady mix of in-depth analysis, juvenile humour and everything in between.

Enjoyed the episode, as per usual. With the new TEW coming out in a month, will this series continue or end?
Are you sure a new one is coming out? I can't find anything about it on the GDS website. I have seen a few general conversations about whether there will be a TEW2025 but nothing else.
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 Oh, it was announced on the forum.
Ah thanks, hadn't seen that! Seems a bit out of nowhere to me- interesting. I would say that the continuation of the series will not be impacted one way or the other, by the new game release.
I thought Daniel’s was already under contract with WCW when they went under, he was just injured
Yeah, I think you're right about Christopher Daniels in reality- whatever the case, he's not included with WCW in the mod. In fairness to the modder, it's a great mod, and you have to forgive some oversights.
A Booker T win, didn’t expect that. Do we see Booker win back the championship for his showdown with Scott Steiner at Starcade?
I thought that might throw some people. I'm looking forward to see what people think of what comes next.
Playing catch up… I called Jarrett winning the championship. Another great show, looking forward how Steiner and Booker T plays out without the championship. On to the next episode
Maybe not quite how you might imagine...
Sign Kane his contract is running out
Not a bad idea...
I enjoy the series, and enjoyed the episode, but I gotta comment, hah. I feel like Nash's character would never say two weeks of pay is irrelevant to him. Even in kayfabe, Nash was all about the money. I feel like he should have been madder. This is a nitpick, of course, this isn't a big criticism, or anything majorly important, hah. Thanks for the episode.
No, I think that's a good point actually, I guess I justified it by thinking that, even if he was annoyed about it, he would pretend not to be. And the character I have envisaged here for Nash is closer to the tweener he played in WWE in late '95/early '96- kind of laid back, chilled out, but still a heel.
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 Ah, yeah. That I can see working. So, Nash can be, in a Nash-like cocky way, like yea, I got decked out of two weeks of pay, but guess what, I signed that fat ass Turner contract in 96, so I can afford it, losers lol. That I can see as being Nash lol. ”But mess with my money again, and you’ll have something coming to you.”
Another great show and Scott Steiner is just at peak performance right now he seemingly could have a match with a broomstick on tv and get a good rating.
Yeah, no doubt about it, Steiner is the MVP of WCW, at least in ring, at this point.
kawada in nitro is INSANE i love it
It's gonna take us a while to put him into something significant- not least because I only have him on a talent trade with AJPW, but also because his popularity in the US is very low.
Can see Jeff Jarrett winning the World Championship in two weeks. Booker T had been a bit lacklustre the last two months. Think a change is needed and it’s heading to the Jarrett Administration
Big shout- love the bold prediction.
Which mod are you using? I tried downloading one from EWBattleground but I get like 7 critical errors when starting a game!
I'm using the 'Goodnight 2001' mod by Johnal881. Can't remember where I downloaded from, but probably was just from the TEW forums.
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 Thanks ill keep looking for it! the DL link i found on the forum was busted.
Ah rubbish!
Another great episode and great to see the partnership with ajpw start out really well maybe down the line you could bring in Keiji mutoh/great muta in for a big ppv match that would be a cool throwback. Also Scott Steiner is a beast doing a 98 on a random Saturday night tag match is insane.
Scott Steiner is easily the best worker in the company at the moment. And I feel bad because I haven't really exploited it yet- but I am trying to build to something big with him later on.
I don't comment much, but I've enjoyed this series. You have a nice, calm non-tryhard way of narrating and hosting which I like. I even think WCW 2001 what if scenarios are really boring and done to death, so I wasn't very into the scenario, but I've still liked viewing this.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you're enjoying the series!
Great episode of nitro definitely feels like the company is hitting its strides in terms of storylines and in ring ratings. Also brilliant idea to bring back Saturday night to act as like a velocity/heat type of show where you can just send the lower card guys to get reps in and improve every week
Obviously the in-ring ratings are obvious because the game explicitly tells you, but the stories are much harder to gauge, so it's great to get some feedback on that aspect, so thanks very much.
Should have konnan manage new Luchadors for cruiserweight division.
I have a plan for a little something to do with Konnan- though it might be a few episodes away before it comes into being. After that though, this could be an option for him longer term.
Based Ice Train.
Great show it sucks that booker t and Shane Douglas had an injury and no chemistry drag the match down but thankfully you didn’t put in as the main event. Also John cena as a bodyguard is as good a role as any for how green he is at this point this is UPW John cena not even OVW John cena so having him stand around and look mean is perfect for him while you season him in the pre show/undercard
Hmmm, I'm throwing Cena in at a bit more of a deep end than that (you'll see what I mean in the next couple of episodes) but yes, the plan is to have him learn on screen in lower important matches and build up some popularity. It was a strange one- I knew I was going to have someone as the bodyguard of Jarrett, but until the week leading up to the Bash, I didn't know it would be Cena, or that it would be a rookie- I had considered signing Ahmed Johnson or using Reno, but Cena seemed like the more exciting choice in the end.
Man WCW is really getting back on track 3 70+ rated matches on 1 show is really good. Also bringing terry funk back to wcw is genius having him back is definitely a great thing for the company
Yes, certainly the best return we've had, in-ring, since the start of the save. Went back and forth for a while about who would come to Terry Funk's aid- I had in mind at one point Sandman- but he went to WWE(!), 2 Cold Scorpio and Mikey Whipwreck, but eventually landed on the Funker!
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 it’s a great hire because you can do so much with him especially with him and ric flair
Possibly, my only concern is that Funk is a fair bit past his best by 2001. We'll see how he does in his first matches back.
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 yeah he’s definitely not a main eventer but hopefully he can be a good midcard talent that brings out decent matches for the guys your trying to build up
Another great episode of nitro and I love the addition of the FBI to the wcw undercard definitely spices things up in terms of the crusierweights and adds in a super underrated worker in tony mamaluke which will be great for your ratings hopefully once the audience gets to know them.
Yeah I'm a fan of both guys. I'm determined to have as strong a Cruiserweight division as possible, and they are a good addition.
Great show even with the Stevie ray/ddp mix up. Also Mike awesome is coming along very nicely with this US title reign definitely rehabbing the damage done on him from 2000
Yeah, can't believe I put Stevie Ray in the match instead of DDP! Thanks for the kind words.
Have interviewers cut promos with the women to help them to get over, sit down interviews talking about who they are
Yeah. You're right, that's what I should be doing- I am going to bring this in eventually, though it might be a couple of months away yet as I book quite a long way in advance.
Jericho with a match of the year?… standard 😎🤣
Great to see great sasuke put on really good performances in the cruiserweight division also I don’t know if he’s available to hire but hayabusa of fmw fame would be a good guy to pick up since during this point fmw was pretty much about to go bust so definitely a lot of opportunities for picking up some international talent
Yeah, I am trying to forge a talent trading agreement with All Japan and/or New Japan but at my current size 'small', they are rejecting it on the basis I am too small for them (this is despite me being the 2nd biggest company in the game, behind only WWF) once I get up to 'Medium' size though, I'm sure I'll be able to do the deal then. Hayabusa's not a bad shout, I hadn't thought about him.
Hey how u not getting the note bout you have to important wrestling in the show
Sorry pal, not sure I understand?
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 ur are using people who are jobbers and the fans not shiting on it like the women's who not over
@@davo5312 ah I see- well the women's matches in particular have not had particularly good ratings so far so I think they are struggling with that, and in the main with the men, we tend to have at least one wrestler who is mildly over in each match, so I think largely we have avoided that issue.
@@therandomwrestlingreview160 am doing wwf vs wow 1993 and am going to do yoko vs koko b ware on my show but there are 2 jobbers and am dint want the match to bomb is there away around that so the crowed won't hate it?
I'm surprised that Yoko and Koko are jobbers in 1993- even in early 1993, WWF had been booking Yoko strongly for months, while Koko had been, at least a lower midcard guy for years. The only thing I can suggest is to book a short match, maybe 4 mins long, and if you're looking to build someone (presumably Yoko) just have him dominate- it might not get a great rating on the night, but should increase Yoko's popularity a bit so that the next time he gets a slightly higher rating.
Just informing there is a slight audio problem as the audio is very quiet and I cant hear your voice properly.
Thanks for letting me know- that's weird- I've checked the episode both in isolation, and as compared to previous ones, and I don't seem to be having the same issue. Let me know if this persists in the future.
Ernest Miller could be a prima donna martial artist who just wants to show off his kicks(and dance moves) while Ice Train is his big strong oaf bodyguard. Goldberg's weakness could be that he struggles in long matches and/or can be outsmarted by veteran heels. Shane Douglas seems to fit well with a female manager so maybe you could put one of the female wrestlers as his manager to help them gain pop faster so they can get better match ratings. I like the seperating the wrestlers into weight classes and each class having Titles, Cruiserweight, CW Tag, World (HW), and Womens- maybe eventually have a womans tag title as well.
It's definitely an aim for the future to build up the women's division enough that they could sustain a tag title, but in truth, all that is a long way in the future- most of the women in our roster have zero popularity at this stage, so it's gonna take some time to establish them enough, even to have singles matches that mean something.
If you are not sure what to use for the August PPV replace New Blood Rising/Road Wild with Clash Of The Champions as a PPV
Clash of the Champions! How did I not think of that?! Hmmm, I won't use it for August as I have an idea what I want to do for that now, but I will probably try and factor in Clash of the Champions somewhere.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do here. I only started getting back into wrestling at around this point. This MOD must have been updated from when I used it years ago, I didn't have the likes of Flair and Goldberg on my roster. I might have to start a game myself now!
Konnan, Kidman, and Jarrett might be good ones to be in the US Champ mix.
Maybe- though I am trying to move this away from being too much of a midcard title- I want to be only just under the World Title really.
oh, ok. maybe those guys for the TV Title mix then @@therandomwrestlingreview160
Well, I don't have the TV Title and I'm not sure I want to bring it back. I'm not really a fan of mid card titles- especially when we have the Cruiserweight Division (both singles and tag titles) which act as mid card titles anyway. The US Title I'm trying to build to the point where it's like an upper-midcard title, bubbling under the main event- kind of like the IC Title was at various times in the 1980s and 1990s- think Razor Ramon style, where he could easily have been in main event but was usually 2nd from the top underneath the World Title.
A name idea for Alex Wright and Norman Smiley could be "The European Connection" maybe? And also you can try and build up the US Title and try and build the Upper Mid Carders around Mike Awesome as he always had the potential to become a top level champion.
How about Euro Connection? European Connection is a little wordy for my taste. Certainly Mike Awesome is a major focus for me, there aren't many members of the mid card that have the potential to move up, and he's definitely the best candidate.
Euro Connection isnt bad name, but connection isnt a very European term persay.. What about? The Euro Lads. Mike Awesome can potentially be World Champion with the right push. Is Steve Corino available? He should have decent wrestling and real good promos and star quality. He might not necessarily fit in, and hed have the language issue, but FMW wrestler WiNG / Yukihiro Kanemura is a pretty good in-ring worker, might be worth giving him a shot.
We'll see about the name for Wright & Smiley- I'm still not set on what I like. Steve Corino is available, BUT, he is so expensive! I don't know why, but the game obviously values him a fair bit more than I do. Interesting about Kanemura, not someone I am familiar with to be honest, and I expect he'll only be available to work in Japan, but I'll check him out.
The Playlist has a hidden video, is there a new episode? 🤔
Coming out later today, in fact...
Im the worlds biggest Scott Hudson fan, from back in the Global Wrestling Federation days. How dare you doubt Scott Hudson! Looking forward to following along.
Haha! Sorry man, I knew SOMEONE would turn out to be Scott Hudson's biggest fan, but he's just not 'it' for me!
Great start for the relaunch of wcw excellent decision to have booker go over in the first ppv of the new wcw. Also even though Dustin is a really bad influence at this point the good thing with him handing in his notice is you can job him out to build up some over your midcard guys to help get them over a bit
You're right, and that was definitely the plan but thankfully he did something backstage that resulted in me being able to fire him before the next episode of Nitro (and I forget to mention it during the episode, which will be out on Tuesday)- so Dustin is already gone!
I’m super glad you kept the cruiser weight tag titles one of the things that was a bright spot in WCWs dying day was the cruiser weights kinda rebuilding the division after russo had made it a total joke jung dragons and 3 count had some really banger matches in 2001. Also my suggestion for the Alex wright and Norman smiley team name is The Blitz because it’s a tag team between a German wrestler and a British wrestler.
Ooh, I like 'The Blitz', I'm gonna have a think about this, but I like that suggestion.
surprised to see Flair pull off a 77 in his match at this point but very useful for you. it might be a good idea to pair Palumbo and O'Haire with some veteran(s).
Me too! Flair still being capable of that quality is definitely a bonus and presumably down to him still having a high level of popularity.
Liking this so far, good job. Maybe sign Paul Ellering?
I mean, I could also sign Road Warrior Hawk and get the Legion of Doom back together again, but I'm not sure that's the way to go in 2001. Glad you're enjoying the series so far- I believe that it will get better, with more going on, as time passes.
Maybe a revamped Road Warriors, bitter veterans who cheat to win but still talk like they dominate opponents
@@jeremyrobertfreelance Yeah I like that idea too. Genuinely got to have a think about how I am going to use Road Warrior Animal- anybody who saw WCW Sin knows that his return was amongst the most underwhelming of all time!
A good idea for Goldberg may be to try and rebuild a new streak for him to get more fans behind him further but try not to make other wrestlers unhappy in the process.
Yeah, I don't imagine will ever get Goldberg up to the level of popularity in 1998 but we do need to rebuild him a bit after all the damage that was done previously.
Call Alex Wright and Norman Smiley as a tag team Intensity
Hmm, yeah I should probably try and come up with a name for them. I was thinking 'The European Union' but maybe that's too political...?
Will there be another TV show, like Thunder or Saturday Night? Maybe Schiavone and Stevie Ray could be the announce team on that 2nd show. Roddy Piper might be a good choice as color commentator or put Dusty Rhodes on.
It's definitely something I've been considering- and will get more pressing of a concern when the roster starts to grow- there will be just too many people on the roster to book on a regular basis. Something to think about going forward, though it will definitely only be a 'B' show if we do add one.
I would choose Mike Tenay as my lead announcer. If I could I would bring in Jim Cornette on color. Sure he's controversial but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Ooh, Cornette would be a good choice- only problem is, I'm fairly certain he's under contract to WWE...
Thinking about it some more I don't think I would use Mike Tenay. Don't get me wrong Mike is good but I think you need a different voice. Since ecw went down I would bring in Joey Styles and Taz. I think it gives you some interesting new voices. Joey Styles was pretty well liked as a lead man.
Well Taz is also with WWE at this point. I get your thinking with Joey Styles, but I'm not as big a fan, as many are, of him- plus I think we need to retain some sense of 'WCW' identity, and Tenay, or Schiavone, would provide that.
WCW was as about as bad of a product as you can get at that time. It needs a massive reboot to work. The Kevin Nashs of the world have to go.
I agree, it was awful. But you still have to maintain something of the general identity of WCW, because otherwise you run the risk of losing even those few hardy souls who remain. I actually think that's one of the major things that Vince Russo, for example, simply didn't understand.
Both jacksons above harley race. Dont show this to cornette.
Ha! Good shout! In fairness, we might actually be on his side on this one- we can't help how the stats came out though!
Greatest non-wrestlers for alltime: Mike Tyson Muhammad Ali Apolo Creed Rickson Gracie (Fire Pro & Virtual Pro) Rolles Gracie (New Japan 2014) Daniel Gracie (New Japan 2014) Cain Velasquez Mark Kerr (The Rock wanted him) Alexandr Karelin Volk Han (Sambo) Don Frye Bas Rutten Dick Vrij Mark Coleman Masahiko Kimura (Judo) Fred Durst (Travis Tomko's boss) Snoop Doggy
Lol this list isn’t it
Obviously everybody has different opinions, but as we stated in the video, this isn't based on any single person's opinion, about any individual wrestler- rather the aggregation of thousands of people's opinion about nearly 4,000 matches. What would be a more appropriate list in your opinion?
Great video 🎉 shout from declan and Leo from Bolton
Thanks lads- Alex has given your channel a shout out on the episode we recorded earlier this week (out on Sunday 29th Oct)- but probably only for Dad's ears if I'm honest (it's a bit of an adult show)!
Been a fan since the mid sixties ( WWWF), with Bruno and etc. Imo ,Superstar Graham should have gotten the belt back in a year because Backlund was horrible. The people were cheering Graham and catching on as a baby face. Also Piper and Snuka should have held the belts. The Heat between them was incredible. I think the most amazing bout was the cage match with Snuka vs Don Muraco . I have never seen a crowd reaction for Snuka when he landed on top Muraco. One for the history books. Today..its a completely story with little to no pop from the crowd-Sad.
