I'm currently replaying the original Dead Space, and the brilliant OST is such a nod to Jerry Goldstein's Alien 1 and this that I had to come back to it. Xenakis basically invented that whole langage. He's the definition of a genius.

"not all music is meant to be liked, some of it is meant to be studied and thought about" just say that you don't like it but understand the appeal instead of trying to sound intelligent. im listening to this because i like it. why would i listen to it if i didn't like it? at the same time, im listening to it to study and evaluate it, because these two things are not mutually exclusive. i also do these things at the same time when i listen to any kind of music. this is because i am a human being and capable of having two emotions at once. for listeners of "avant-garde" music some of y'all have pretty regressive ideas

Xenakis made a whole orchestral arrangement with a buttload of strings, only for snobs to come and say that his music is nonsense and that "eVeN bAbIeS cAn dO ThAt".

This piece has a tremendous power to it. It seems ‘random’ but is anything but random. I think Xenakis and Bach were doing very similar things. Bach took the equal temperament scale as a basis and intentionally spanned music according to the mathematics ‘rules’ known back in his day. Xenakis took subsets of the equal temperament scale and used them as basis to intentionally span music according to more modern discovered mathematical ‘rules’ of stochastics. Both Bach and Xenakis were seeking the same thing - the fundamental deep order underlying our universe. Bach, if had a chance to meet Xenakis, would have been immensely proud.
