I’ve wondered forever what that instrument sound was in many forms of Japanese media I’ve heard. Now I finally know.

I first heard this instrument during the ceremonies accompanying Emperor Hirohito’s funeral in 1990. I searched for many years before finding this sound again. What beauty and unity and harmony of the universe! Brilliant.

Beautifully played and danced, indeed! Those are some of the best historical dance renditions I have ever seen, takes a lot of research and rehearsal to get it that good! Very nice...

Pavanes are the slow, very graceful dances. Really were meant for the "old folk" to be able to get out on the dance floor and show off their finery, without too much physical exertion.

Most galliards on KZread are around 169 - 171 beats per minute. This one is about 143. The difference this makes is significant. Whilst the excitement and dynamic may be reduced, the gain is in the beauty of the movements. We have a splendid use of arms, both graceful and demonstrative, and the body movements both in shading and position are so exquisitely worked out. These are details frequently missed in faster performances. Here we see a gallantry and affection rarely seen in other performances. The execution of the saut majeur and cadences - particularly noticeable in the gentleman - are wonderful, the lady is a delight in her gentler actions. An excellent performance. Thank you.
