Radio stuff...an amateur/ham returning back to the hobby. I learned a lot of good (& bad!) advice from the Internet when returning back to the hobby late 2018 after a 30 year break. Once I was back on the air I decided to "do my bit" and put something back into the online community which hopefully may help others finding their way into the hobby, or if you're like me, just some decent content to watch.

All my videos are a reflection of what I've been up to in terms of building, testing and operating and generally exploring the hobby. They are generally either simple projects that anyone can try, or my operational exploits...

All captured and edited and uploaded from an iPhone 8 (2018-2022) and an iPhone 13 Mini from summer 2022.

I hope you find this channel enjoyable and interesting.

73.

Ian.

    Thank you so much for making this video Ian. I just checked the box of 10 compression PL-259's that I purchased from M0mat a couple of years ago, and unfortunately they won't tighten up on my Hyendfed antenna that I planned to install this weekend. Fortunately, I haven't soldered them to the coax yet. They do fit my rig and other accessories, though. Hopefully, my neighbour will be able to help me by using his lathe. If not, I'll have to dust off the old Dremel.

    Been there done that too, but why??? Why should we have to resort to this butchery when a PL259 should be a PL259 should be a PL259, at least the critical dimensional features. Another PIA is the thread pitch on some of the sockets I've come across being slightly finer whereby the plug wont screw on fully because of a different thread pitch/ form. This is a total mind blower to me. 1. Why would anyone want to pay for a 358 cm of coax for the choke balun or a ferrite toroid with added coax when they could use 263 cm of cheaper wire for the radiating sleeve? 2. CB antenna designers are not the sharpest engineers. I don't understand why we need to emulate their misguided attempts at antenna design. There are easier and cheaper designs with more gain.

    Nice video. I have one question/concern about the design, though.... Would it be more appropriate to switch the order of the two cores so that the 1:1 current balun (choke) is attached at the antenna side of the pair to convert the 200-ohm BALanced load to 200-ohm UNbalanced, then with the second core, transform the 200-ohm UNbalanced to 50-ohm UNbalanced? (So that the order is 1:1 BALUN to 4:1 UNUN with the antenna side being 200-ohm BALanced and the transceiver side being 50-ohm UNbalanced.) The way it is presented, as I understand it, in the video, the 4:1 UNUN is being used on the BALanced side of the circuit rather than the UNbalanced side of the circuit. This doesn't seem quite right to me, but maybe you have a good reason for it that I am not seeing?

  • @ianxfs
    @ianxfs17 күн бұрын

    You could possibly reverse them as you suggest I suspect, but then the 1:1 would need to be designed for 200Ohm? This version copies the 1:1 50Ohm I’ve successfully used on my 80m dipole. After some years of use I can confirm that it performs really well and is my go-to main antenna 👍🏻 Thanks for commenting 😀
