    I grew up with Soka Gakkai, my mom's side of the family is from Japan, and followers of SG/SGI. I didn't really pay attention to it 🤣 but I did always find it curious that they had a serious outreach to non-Japanese people, and really famous ones like Herbie Hancock and Tina Turner

    I think it's important to also note that Japan Innovation (Ishin) and a few other parties, mainly Reiwa Shinsengumi, also draw support from younger types - just recently we saw Shinji Ishimaru, a populist who focused basically only on turning out younger people, place second in Tokyo because of this disconnect between the older political structure (LDP, Komeito, CDP, JCP, etc.) and the younger voters who don't feel like they have any sort of impact

    Great video, my one issue is that you made it seem like Kokka (State) Shintō represents all of Shintō. The divinity of the Emperor was a doctrine of State Shintō, not the religion as a whole. Shintō is very diverse with many sub-faiths and sects, so I find it disappointing that it continues to be misrepresented.

    is voter apathy a studied aspect of the LDP's domination of japanese politics?

  • @Lawarch
    @Lawarch16 күн бұрын

    There have been studies on voter non-participation being a part of the LDP success yes. And there have been several reforms including the ones in 1994 to encourage the creation of a more two party system as well as the more recent lowering the Japanese voting age to 18 to encourage people to vote. But it hasn't really resulted in a drastic political change or drastically more political engagement. But the LDP were also out of power for a few years from 2009-2012 so the situation is always changing

    While watching this, it struck me that Soka Gakkai is akin to Japanese Christianity. 1. Origins during Upheaval and Foreign Rule: Just as Christianity emerged during a tumultuous period in the Roman Empire, Soka Gakkai originated in a time of significant upheaval in post-war Japan. Japan was under American occupation at that time, which can be compared to Roman rule in the Levant. 2. Development as a Branch or Spin-off: Soka Gakkai is a branch of Nichiren Buddhism, similar to how Christianity is a branch of Judaism. Also, just as Christianity, Soka Gakkai seems to be more about love love bombing then following strict rituals. This too reflects the relationship between Judaism and Christianity. 3. Focus on Marginalized Groups: Both Soka Gakkai and early Christianity focused on marginalized groups, such as the poor, the underprivileged and woman. And are also conservative about gender roles. 4. Cultural Upending: Soka Gakkai’s challenges to traditional Japanese values and norms, including Bushido and mainstream Buddhism, resonate with Christianity’s challenge to Roman religious and cultural norms. This parallels what Nietzsche referred to as 'slave morality.' 5. Refusal to Acknowledge Other Deities: Soka Gakkai’s strict focus on Nichiren’s teachings and Buddhism as the ultimate path mirrors Christianity’s monotheistic stance and its rejection of other deities, including the refusal to pay homage to Roman gods. 6. Public Rejection: Similar to early Christianity, Soka Gakkai encountered skepticism and criticism from mainstream society, akin to the Roman reaction to Christianity. Just as the Romans were suspicious of Christianity and did not understand how Christians practiced their faith, Soka Gakkai faced similar misunderstandings and doubts. 7. Government Prosecution: Soka Gakkai has faced legal and political scrutiny in Japan, much like early Christians endured persecution under Roman authorities. 8. Political Influence: Soka Gakkai’s eventual involvement in Japanese politics through the Komeito party parallels Christianity’s integration into the Roman political system after its early period of persecution. Both movements transitioned from being marginalized to becoming influential in their respective political spheres. 9. Declining Followers: Both religions are experiencing a decline in followers. Mind you, I know nothing about the religion pass this video. I am just noticing a pattern.

  • @cuddlecreeper8
    @cuddlecreeper815 күн бұрын

    Apart from a few patterns they really couldn't been more different. The "Refusal to Acknowledge Other Deities" part just isn't correct as there's many Buddhist deities. Focusing on the teachings of Nichiren as a school of Nichiren Buddhism isn't exactly that surprising. Government Prosecution was done to Buddhism in general as Imperial Japan was trying to wipe out anything "foreign", even imperializing Shintō into State Shintō to claim divinity of the Imperial Family. Many believe Shintō was a construction of the Imperial Government, or that the divinity of the Imperial Family is a doctrine of all of it, but these are things of what was State Shintō only. The weird part is prior to the Imperial Government's order of separation, Shintō and Buddhism were very intertwined in Japan. After the fall of the Imperial Government, they have become somewhat intertwined again, though not to the same extent as before. Additionally Buddhism and Christianity are very different religions with wildly different theology and world views, though with some of the similar things that happened to Soka Gakkai and Christianity I can see some of the parallels in how both were treated early on.

  • @StephaneTheard

    One thing I notice reading this comment is the time span it took these two religions to go through this exact process. It took Christianity basically 1,000 years to go through these phases, while it too the Soka Gokkai less than 100 years to go through the same.
