Listening to this conversation makes me feel so overwhelmed as a middle school teacher. Ideas are great but there’s just so much classroom management issues from traumatized kids to deal with that. It just all feels like too much.

Thanks so much for this helpful video. I am leaning more towards the responsive classroom approach, which is focusing on relationship building, but I also like the idea of letting the students know we have a goal for 100% target language.

I am definitely using Blob!! This is great for using target language and also on a social emotional level, showing how kids are alike rather than different. Thank you for sharing!

Most school districts won't hire comprehensible input teachers. Administrators think it is just lazy teaching and doesn't work. It is so contrary to everything they have been teaching about active learning for their entire lives. And if you do get hired as a comprehensible input teacher, they will abuse you to the point you quit. A few districts do comprehensible input, but even there, administrators don't get it and aren't on board with it.

The links for sample units (and possibly other files) are marked as being corrupted and cannot be recovered by Word or LibreOffice in the "Resources for World Languages and Immersion in South Carolina 2020" document linked to at the end of the video. Any other way to obtain these?

What if Admin is not just confused but is trying to force you to teach like traditional teachers? I am having a very rough time with Admin. Traditional teachers just told me to switch whenever Admin drops into my classroom and do something you know they like. Prepare a lesson and train the students ahead of time. So then when Admin comes in, you can switch activities. Admin. has no knowledge of, interest in, or curiosity about language acquisition or comprehensible input or proficiency-based methods.

I am a French teacher. High School. I was doing all the CI and proficiency stuff and did repeat after me for pronunciation. Also use Glossika and Pimsleur to repeat after a native speaker. And pronunciation is approx. 1/3 of test score. I call them over one at a time to read a dialogue aloud that I have given to them and we have practiced in class. But all of that is not enough. Native speakers would not understand them. This is not specific to my class. It is the same in every French class in the country practically. CI and proficiency are not enough. Repeat after me is not enough. Testing them on pronunciation is not enough. Here is why. As children, our brains learn to exclude non-English sounds as not important. So when my students hear "vu", not only are they not able to say it, they have a hard time hearing the difference between "vu" and "vous". So they say "vous" instead of "vu". I do not correct students' speech in class because of affective filter and embarasment in front of peers. I found the best way to teach them is to go over the text that they know will be on the test one-on-one with them. Only takes 5 minutes. I correct them on every error while reading a text. They appreciate the attention and the feedback. Fortunately, my school has a long homeroom time and I give them passes and make it an assignment for them to talk to me during homeroom. Because otherwise, they do not understand the importance of pronunciation. I do this for all levels. If they are not intelligible to native speakers, we are all wasting our time learning language.

What about observations? We have observations by administrators who have no language learning or teaching background and are very critical of proficiency and CI teaching. I do free voluntary reading daily and it's working great but admin. hates it and says I should do more paired speaking (even though I do that too). Admin is driving me nuts. Ideas?

I absolutely had to take up yoga to counteract the constant, repetitive motions of running, and it worked within a week. Luckily I found an inexpensive 2-hour, 2-night/week course offered through my public school county’s Adult Education program (that offers things like GED courses). The teacher learned yoga as recovery from a serious car accident. She was very thorough. I can barely bend in the morning, so morning yoga is not as satisfactory for me. Physical therapists warn to be cautious about stretching first thing in the morning. After running, when everything is warmed up, is a good time. Running is a great reason to get outside, and so is walking. Yoga is so worthwhile, indoors or out. Suerte. Bon chance.
