    Idk if this is helpful, but watching this I remembered the fang kit I got from a halloween outlet that worked like this: a smooth outer shell tooth shape that you then used thermo plastic to fill and press over your tooth. That way the outer finish is exactly tooth shaped and smooth and the inside is where the smooshing happens. Maybe you guys could do something like that? Sculpt/3D print a hollow tooth shape and then press-fit it to your teeth with the thermo plastic? Just a thought, these already look great though!

    Me and my twin brother made our own fake fangs when we were young using a hot melt glue gun and made a mold tray out of waxy cardboard and we just slobbered a lot and waited until it cooled enough to still be able to bite into it by very carefully biting down and releasing until we knew it was cool enough that it would not hurt us lol. Then we just put a bunch of hot melt glue onto a surface like glass or a mirror or wax paper and used our spit or water to smooth it out to a fairly uniform thin layer and just drew out our teeth shapes we wanted and cut them out with scissors and then glued them onto the base mold we made. They turned out fairly bulky but we got better at it and ended up with some alright fangs. But that was many years ago, a few years back I made new fangs using the proper movie method with dental alginate, hydrocal teeth copies, dental monomers and all that, they turned out just like the movies and you could even bite through a pop can with them!. If done right they stay in VERY well!. The monomer is VERY smelly tho and not cheap!.

    I came to suggest making an alginate mold and plaster/caststone cast, which I see others have already suggested. I used to do that and, make the teeth with a dental temporary kit in past ages before thermoplastics were readily available. The temporary kit had a range of shades to match typical tooth colors. Aluminum foil or “liquid tinfoil” can be used for a release agent, if needed.

    I kind of expected you to make dental impressions of your teeth. You've got all the skills, it is just making some molds and a few plaster casts. It would then be easier to shape the fake teeth on the plaster casts. It does take me back though, my first summer job was in a dental lab more than 40 years ago

    This is a great way to make low cost fangs for cosplay :) Some things to consider: Be very mindful with the right temperatures - if the material is too hot when applied it can cause irritation of the nerve and if u are unlucky it can do permanent damage and in the worst case u will need a root canal treatment on that tooth. Too high temperatures can also damage the gum tissue, but at much lower risk of permanent damage. Also keep in mind that all small things in the oral cavity that are not glued or cemented can be accidentally be digested or worse: aspirated - but please do NOT glue your self made fangs to your teeth! Just be mindful of them! A little vaseline can help them to stay on better if needed :) Any sharp edges on the fangs can cause small cuts in all tissues of your mouth (gums, cheeks, tongue) with the risk of infektions, so smooth them as best as you can. Most dental materials are well tested for the wet and abrasive environment of the oral cavity, most thermoplastics are not. So consider limiting the wear time. One last point - not all people have the optimal preconditions to do this kind of "overmold" - they may have cracks, dents, fillings, undercut areas etc. and can have trouble removing the molded material off of the tooth - do NOT try to reheat the material in your mouth (use some warm water at best), better try to pry it open, but be careful to not damage your own teeth. In the case that u cant remove the material on your own consider seeing a dentist and ask for help :) Thanks for the great tutorial :) English is not my first language, so excuse any spelling mistakes.

    Nice project, hope you get used to wearing them! Another option, especially if you need more extravagant, or big pieces would be using dental grade resin with a 3D printer. Personally I played an Orc in the european LARP scene for a long time and I would have given an arm and my left nut for such tools and materials back in the day. Luckily I befriended a dental technican who made me wonderfully gross orc tusks and front teeth for my birthday some day. Way nicer than whatever you could buy in stores.

    I did not know that Britt is fluent in Dentist. 😁 I bet that those thermoplastic beads come in a more toothlike color but that probably costs more. I wear dentures. Would that plastic stick permanently? What would you suggest as a release agent?

    I used some gel food coloring to dye my thermoplastic. I kneaded it into the plastic before I started shaping it. It was a bit messy, but worked. What's cool about using food dye is if you are doing a full mouth set of teeth, you can make a gum like color, let that harden and then attach the teeth without it being in your mouth the whole time. BTW, is all thermoplastic non-toxic or is there a good way to check? I bought stuff that said it was suitable for dentistry because I didn't know if the stuff I had on hand was safe.

  • @punishedprops
    @punishedpropsКүн бұрын

    Neat idea! You’ll want to double check with whatever brand/type of plastic you choose to make sure it’s safe to put in your mouth.

    You should take an alginate cast and make plaster impressions to work on - the you can apply heat whilst moldingthe stuff to the plaster tooth.

    Actually I did the mk4 upgrade for one of my mk3s+ printers. However, I have 5 and already upgraded some of them to zOrbiter 2.0 hotend, with Revo etc. So while the Nextruder is quite nice, I do not think it would be needed on all of my mk3s+ printers. On the other hand, the nextruder is extremly nice and I think it might be interesting to upgrade a totally different printer. As you can not get a single Nextruder (exept in the XL +1 tool upgrade for more than 600€) from prusas shop, I think about buying a mk3.9 upgrade and use it as 3.5 upgrade. If I understand correctly, the main difference between the mk 3.5 and the 3.9 upgrade is the Nextruder in the 3.9 upgrade kit and the adapter cables in the 3.5 upgrade. As I could crimp adapter cables myself, it would be 549-279=270€ to get a Nextruder to use on another printer. Which seems a nice deal, as I already found a solution on github how to use a load cell with a smal microcontroller (to compansate for temperature drift and reliable detect collision) so you could use the nozzle for probing. Do I miss something? At the moment I build a RatRig VCore 3.1 500. Haven´t decided for the printhead yet. As the bed moves there, I plan to do a toolchanger later on. However, calibrating multiple tools is not an easy task (actually I should have waited for the Vcore 4 - but s... happens). With the Nextruders load cell the calibration technique the XL uses should be a nice way to do it even on a DIY printer. Also while the Nextruder does not have native high flow nozzles (yet) due to the adapter you still can use CHT nozzles. While I might not get the full speed a Vcore normaly can print at, it still would be a nice speed for my usecases. So using the Nextruder design as basis for my own adaption might be interesting...
