Cornucopia Orchards

Cornucopia Orchards

We are a family of four, building our new home, farm, and permaculture orchard. We left behind a decade of experience in retail management to take our side hustle of DIY remodeling and flipping houses and hobby farming and turn it into building our dream home, and hopefully, a business growing good food for our local community.

    Are you talking about for when we seal around the base, or something else? If around the base, why not a high quality silicone caulk? My understanding is that they both do well in wet conditions, but that the silicone won't take paint (not an issue) but lasts longer. Can you share why you'd recommend the poly sealant?

    @@CornucopiaOrchards if you search there is a list of approved sealants, all polyurethane and none that I know of are silicone. Plus if in the future it ever needs repair once you use silicone not much else will stick where the silicone was!

    Polyurethane sealant will end up under all the tile when all finished. Seal all GoBoard with the recommended polyurethane sealant even the GoBoard tub/shower flange! Seal tile in any surface where walls change directions such as corners with a color matching caulk(some do come in silicone)! Remember the walls will move in different directions depending on inside and outside temperatures and humidity. Grout in corners will eventually crack!

    I had a fellow do the mudding in my house this summer. He's been at it for decades. He still gets bubbles here and there. It's inevitable. That said, he got way way less than the room I did myself. It is an art. Be careful in the sanding. Get lights which are way brighter than usual, you need light to see defects. Shine the light parallel to the wall as opposed to towards the face, you see more.

    Actually using either a 2 3/8" .116 gauge galvanized ring shank or 1 1/2", depending on what I am shooting where. Window trim I am mostly using the 2 3/8", because I know I have solid backing. The general siding field was mostly the smaller size. If you have it, smaller nails in a coil gun would be faster and cheaper. Galvanized is a good idea.

    I wanted to double check if they recommended just caulk or the GoBoard specific sealant. Either should work according to the rep. I plan on also running a caulk bead between the tile and the base, which is pretty universal.

    Raccoons are climbers, too. Through the summer you may want to put some of the anti rodent spray around the outside perimeter, as well. Might help with chipmunks and squirrels at the same time, they go right through most fences.

    Two questions I was DM'd I thought I'd answer here: 1) Is the foam board a problem over top of the kraft paper (both are vapor retarders)? A: The foam board should not be at a 2" depth or less, and with nothing sandwiched in between them. 2) Wouldn't furring strips be cheaper? Yes, the furring strips would have cost the same as about 2 sheets of this 2" foam board. We needed about 10 sheets for this project. However, they would have offered no other benefits. This attic is going to have a lot of heat pressure, and the added insulation value and thermal bridging gap should help prevent heat loss in the winter and heat gain from the dark-color roofing in the summer.

Also, unlike most everyone else on social media, we have not earned a penny from anyone for this, as our channel has not reached monetization. I (Jeremy) am doing almost all the work solo and have less than 4 full days a week I can spend working, as Casey works the other days to support us and I am a SAHD. For those wondering: the foam board does act as a vapor retarder, similar in water passing through to the kraft paper with asphalt that backs the batts. They are sandwiched directly together, and neither is completely vapor impermeable--and they are only being sandwiched on part of a cathedral ceiling, so I'm not worried about condensation happening between them. I haven't seen others on KZread use ducting strap for holding up insulation--usually it is small wires cut to just the right length, sightly wider than the space between joists. I like the strapping because it is a little cheaper for the area to be covered, I feel a little quicker to install, and does not take up any space at all in the area between joists where the insulation should be.

    Kind of late to the party, but you seem to have a good need for quality construction. But despite an apparent attention to details. I am surprised you didn't apply ZIP tape to the top of your deck joists! Sure, it's pressure treated wood. But all the injection "divots" will hold rainwater from the seemingly endless rainshowers and fail prematurely, especially with exposure to sunlight on rainfree days. Enjoying the playlist with our disabled son. Thanks for sharing!

  • @CornucopiaOrchards
    @CornucopiaOrchards4 ай бұрын

    Thank you so much for the kind words! I did consider taping the joists. I actually spoke with a huber rep and they discouraged me from using the zip tape for that application. My experience with this type of PT in this area is that it can last 20 years or more before replacement. The first house I remodeled 8 years ago had a stapled sticker that was covered and still legible that indicated it was from the 90s. That deck's PT was at the point of becoming dangerous, I'll grant you. Oregon is wet really just through the spring where I live, and then pretty much dry the rest of the year. I would have looked at a fully covered porch and maybe taped too if I lived on the coast, or somewhere that got more than 30 inches/4 months of light rain a year like this part of the valley. The deck boards we got are (limited) warrantied, for 25 years... so I figured on the upper deck where there is more exposure, we'd probably be replacing both in 20, or, depending on how the deck boards actually wear on a farm with kids, maybe the deck boards sooner and select PT boards at the same time. I'm glad you and your son are enjoying watching!

    Great idea on the rain screen strips for a more economical option. I may copy this idea for our build. Would basically be similar to the Keene EasyFur product, although that has a 10 mm thickness. I noticed that Mortair Vent does make a 10 mm product in addition to the 6mm option shown here, so I may use that for a little extra drying potential. One suggestion, though. For proper installation, I believe the product needs to be installed with the mesh side facing the sheathing and the fabric covering facing outward. However, that's probably more critical when using a reservoir cladding like stucco, brick or stone to keep mortar from plugging the drainage mat. Best wishes on your build.

  • @CornucopiaOrchards
    @CornucopiaOrchards5 ай бұрын

    That makes sense, not sure why I thought that was the front! You're right though, I don't think it will have any negative impact on our install but it sure would on brick. We did end up receiving and using some 10mm that was shipped to us instead of 6mm that we ordered. The 10mm was a little bit trickier with trim to make it stay in plane, but doable.

    Outside of the main "panel" it is fewer fittings than you might be thinking, very few corners used and most runs a full line from start panel to end point. I will grant you the push connect fittings are more expensive for sure. It helped a lot to buy in bulk. Based on 2 estimates I did get I saved several thousand dollars on the whole system doing it myself, so that more than balanced out. Less than 10% is outside the building's envelope and less than 1% is not buried in insulation. Our climate is pretty mild, so there is little chance of failure due to freezes. None of the joints are under lateral pressure, so in theory it should last just fine. 😄 I will definitely share if we start having problems! If there is a "next" time I will likely try to run all in copper.

    Well, in this case, I am the homeowner... 🤣 I made use of almost every last foot of duct we ordered, so it it is patched for sure. I have a lot of respect for people in the trades with the experience and OCD to make their trades look great even if they'll be buried in the walls. Curious though, do you mean all the individual branch lines we did in flex? Almost entirely a cost decision. I was able to get the flex lines done for half the cost it would have been for metal. If I had the decision to make again after what I've learned, I might have gone with all metal anyway. But on the other hand, I do not like all-metal duct systems for small residential because they carry sound far too well. The metal ducts in my last house, we could hear kids through the ducts all the way across the house--over 70' of duct, multiple elbows and a box between. Is there something that helps with that, other than not having kids? 😁
