I just got back from visiting Riga and learned a bit about the Baltic Way while I was there. I wanted to know more and found your documentary. Really informative and extremely well done!

This is the best example of Peaceful Protest in the last 35 years. It could not be assailed or defamed for being violent or anything else. It had to be openly accepted as a basic Human Right.

I was 7 years old at the time, and my mother and I participated in the Baltic way. With the war in Ukraine, watching this makes me cry... praying for a speedy victory for Ukraine. We stand in solidarity with Ukraine in these though days, weeks, months and now years. We haven't forgotten our past, and we do not wish it upon anybody.

I'd like to add that the Baltic people were able to achieve the "impossible" - joining hands across a very large span of land. The USA attempted "Hands Across America" a couple of years before the Baltic nations did. While the US was, in some areas, successful, it certainly wasn't as successful as it was supposed to be. The "Hands Across America" campaign was supposed to unite Americans from coast to coast. I hadn't heard that other countries did this as well. I'm glad the Baltic nations were successful in such a feat and that they were able to take a stand and make a statement peacefully! Other nations should remember this event and follow suit - just like other nations did in 1989. We need more peaceful protests, such as this, nowadays. I believe peace achieves greater results than violence!

Hi! I was a part of Baltic Way as a kid. I am from Latvija. All about Baltic Way in your story is correct. But there is something important missing between Baltic Way and Independence of Baltic states. There were protests against soviet dictatorship in Baltic states. Common people were builndig baricades around strategic objects (like radio and television) to protect them from soviet troops. Respectively it resulted in many deaths of Baltic people. During protests many Baltic people were shot to death (including journalists) by russian (soviet) troops and some were run over alive by soviet tanks. However in the end of this blood bath 3 Baltic states (Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT) and Estonia (EE)) broke out to independence and now are NATO alliance countries. :)

Yes. That was a traumatic day. I remember the violent night at the barricades very well. I was at my grandmas work place and she worked late that day. We had to walk through the adjacent park to get home, not far from the bullet sounds. We could hear them clearly, but didn't dare to look back where the sound was coming from, just walked as fast as we could. When we reached home, we were glued to the TV for the rest of the night and watched as the body count was rising. I was 9 years old at the time.

As a Latvian American. Sadly I couldn't be there. Yet a small group of us at University here in Indiana held a public commons area demostration in support and to draw attention to the plight of the Baltic States. We had a group of 100 Americans join us and we had a mini chain. LONG LIVE LATVIJA! Long Live the Baltic Way.
