Hello Dolly and Starlight Express are my 2 fave shows of the year (along with Spirited Away). Hadestown and Next to Normal were both outstanding, even if I didn’t love them quite as much. Not a big fan of Two Strangers, and haven’t seen the last two, although I really have no excuse for one since I live in Woolwich. Will put it on my list.

I'll be back in London in Dec 8-19 for work and definitely hoping to catch Hadestown, Starlight Express, and Oliver revival then. Normally I don't get travel dates until a month before, so hopefully this time I can plan a bit better with more advanced notice. Disappointed to just miss Hello Dolly ... I didn't make it to these others but for me top shows I saw this year were Next To Normal and People, Places and Things. I want to try some smaller theatres outside the London West End this time ...

Well slightly curious….. seen about 15-20 shows yet none are on your list but have tickets for 3 of the shows in the forthcoming weeks….so “best is yet to come” !…..of the shows I’ve seen and are still playing, Guys and Dolls would be the one I definitely want to see again before it closes Ps if several shows are closing in Sept, is there clarity what’s replacing them…… and maybe plan for (Curious about Devil wears Prada)

That’s exciting that you have 3 from this list coming up! ☺️ which ones? Keep me posted how you like them! I’ve included Guys & Dolls in my best shows of 2023 video so couldn’t include it again but it’s one of my favourites too (same with Standing at the Sky’s Edge and Stranger Things) ! There are some shows which I loved that closed (The Picture of Dorian Grey) or are closing soon (People, Places & Things, Romeo & Juliet) so didn’t want to include those either as people wouldn’t be able to see them if they watch the video.

@@KristinaEmilyOfficial Two Strangers and Hadestown (Aug) and Hello Dolly (Sept). Since Thursday, saw A Chorus Line (Tour ….wish I had known the storyline beforehand but still good), Mean Girls (exceeded my low expectations!) and Phantom (one of final performances before new cast….music was great as ever but acting/production was best I’ve seen….having seen it probably 20+ times over 30 years !

Can't believe I'm only seen Next to normal of all these - although I do have '2 strangers' booked. 😃 Feel like I'm falling behind haha Starlight express has been so polarising that it has put me a bit off watching it. On another note - I'm surprised People, places and things didn't make top 7. Not as good as these?

I can’t believe either haha 😅 but that’s good cause you still have some time to see them! People, places & things is fantastic and defo in my top 3 this year but it’s closing in 10 days so wanted to focus on shows people can see for at least another month or longer!

Also just realised I haven’t come back to you about Starlight - it’s definitely not my favourite story and music but the production is great and fun! I went a few weeks ago, the special effects were 'alright'. I loved the plot point of the show and the actors were genuinely amazing 🎉 but on the website it say no under-5s. Would definitely say no under 12s. The horror and gore was extreme for the little kids there. And including me! and the good part about watching Stranger Things on Netflix is if it gets a bit too much, you can pause it or fast forward. In real life, you can't do that. I had to leave the theatre with 20 minutes left of the show, while i was having a panic attack. The employees were co caring and considerate. I watched the rest of the show on a TV screen they had in the lobby. We also paid £200 for front row seats. So definitely use the app this video talks about 😂😂

  • @KristinaEmilyOfficial

Sorry to hear you have to leave cause of a panic attack! It’s a scary show and I totally agree with you that under 12s is a more appropriate age restriction. Also it’s pretty long and dark and that doesn’t help. Sounds like you’ve enjoyed it overall! I’m excited to see if this story in any way is referenced to in the final series!

I went twice already, I LOVE that they included "Just Leave Everything to Me" which is not usually (maybe never before) in the musical and was written for Barbra Streisand when she did the movie. Overall, I liked that this production is closer to the film than previous theatre productions. You can notice that in the voice arrangements, choreographies and the personality of some characters. I am so happy they didn't fall into the "iconic" moments and costumes and they went for something different, which makes it so refreshing.

I highly recommend that anyone wanting to learn the history of Hello, Dolly! start this video at 1:08, as the camera pans down the story of how a British one-act play written in 1835 evolved into a smash Broadway musical in 1964. (You'll need to stop-and-start, but the whole text is in focus.) Michael Stewart's book for Hello, Dolly! stays remarkably close to the characters and plot in Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, including -- remarkably -- that three of the characters have lost their spouses (Dolly Gallagher Levi, Horace Vandergelder and Irene Molloy) and are looking to marry again. Wilder loved the old theatrical farces of his youth, with all their plot contrivances, and Jerry Herman's music and lyrics evoke the effervescent spirit of vaudeville superbly.

I saw this when it was at the Donmar and it blew me away. It's not the type of thing that would normally appeal to me but it brought tears to my eyes several times. All the cast are fantastic and a certain plot point caught me completely by surprise. The set looks pretty similar to when it was at the Donmar. The central unit there turned round at times there, I don't know if it still does at Wyndhams. I would love to see it again but living far away from London there are too many other plays, etc that I want to see to be able to fit this in to my visits. I would urge other people to see it even if the subject doesn't appeal as it is well worth it.

  • @KristinaEmilyOfficial

Ahh I bet seeing this at Donmar was pretty special. Yes - the central point turns a bit so it sounds like it's very a very similar set up to how it was before. Given that the cast is the same, I think what you've experienced in Donmar is very close (if not better) to the West End transfer so totally appreciate you might want to prioritise other shows. ☺
