For anyone who wants to read for me this song.... He just got off work me. Lying on my back and his head rested between my boobs. Arms wrapped around me. Only 2 pillar candles lighting the room. His eyes closed me singing the song word-for-word. I tickled him with the tips of my fingers on his head, his ears, neck. And tears silently rolling out of my eyes and my thought was "Oh my God, if i died right now i would die happy. This safe feeling, this comfort and happiness that almost makes me sick because it's so foreign to me. And i remember thinking this is what being in love and being loved back feels like". It was truly one of the happiest moments of my life, listening to this song. Now, every time I hear this song its like a dull knife being twisted in an old wound. God, wanting to go back to that exact moment. She says it best when she says so bitter sweet!

It always amazing to me that she wrote this song at such a young age. This isa song that resonates so much more as you get older. She is a genius songwriter and singer and no mistake.

Yet another classic album that stands the test of time even 50+ years later. I remember seeing Joni many mornings in a little cafe on the corner of Thompson and Prince in Soho (NYC) in 1986/87. She must have been living in the area at the time, just as I was. She always sat by herself at a little table by the window writing in one journal or another (she usually had more than one). I never interrupted her or asked for her autography even though I wanted to. Our eyes did meet a couple of times, but all I could do was nod in recognition of her pure genius. I remember it vividly because I had just come back from living in Europe and I really hated my job at the time. I was just starting to lean into being a writer and seeing her on those special mornings gave me the reassurance that art and commerce can indeed co-exist. It was partly because of her that I quit that job and eventually moved to southern California, where I often had the pleasure of cruising up and down Laurel and Coldwater Canyon in a zippy little convertible. Shine on Joni Mitchell, Shine on!

In the seventies I used to buy the best music I could afford, and Joni Mitchell healed my loneliness with her poetry and beautiful songs which I still listen today, after so many years. She has been my treasure island for which I am so grateful to her.

No one but Joni Mitchell could have written this song. The sparse, visceral images we all recognize are in fact well-fitting pieces of a puzzle that might take years to understand. She even breaks the rules of poetry she herself sets out by adding at the end of every verse one singular inner thought bubble, an ‘apropos of nothing’ statement of plaintive regret where we only expect a refrain. It’s fascinating each time and I don’t recall anyone else ever doing that, like a heart to heart conversation with us as we reminisce over a heartbreak. I’m in a state of forever awe with Joni Mitchell. She has sung much of my life with greater understanding that even I had of it, all the while offering her own heart without reserve and a music lesson I would take with me the rest of my life. Just pure love for her.
