Not sure if anyone else has already posted about this but the familiar "Italian version" of this opera is a combination of the original music by Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) and recitatives composed much later by Ferdinand Lachner (1856-1910). Moreover, I believe Lachner composed his linking recitatives to a German text, hence some peculiar emphases in the Italian translation. While performances of the original French version with its extensive spoken dialogue will for many reasons always be a rarity, it's good for once to be able to appreciate Cherubini's score without the Romantic accretions.

Thank you very much for this. How disappointed I was by the Met's presentation of Don Carlos... it was literally just the Modena version with French text, there was nothing artistically enlightening about the project except to say "Look! They're singing in French!" Very little original music. No L'hiver est lang, no ballet... disappointment.

Wonderful performance! With the return of Le Prophete (aix) and Vestale (Paris), I really hope for a great revival of Grand Opera.. Meyerbeer, Auber, Halevy, Spontini, Sadly Meyerbeer was forgotten, as May 2nd "celebrates" his 160 years of death :/. Not even a gala concert. Not even the 200 years of Crociato. Hope next year we have a 160 years of Africaine somewhere. 🙏

@@giacomomeyerbeersohn This is a question of the approach to the original. We can say the same about Verdi's FRENCH ORIGINAL Don Carlos or Les Vepres Siciliennes . They were composed to a French libretto. It is a question of personal taste how one prefers to hear / listen to the opera. As for Cherubini, one of the biggest reformators of opera, he used spoken dialogue. Now, not everyone is fluent in French. In this case the non French speaker , can fall asleep ! And here comes Lachner to save the situation. The same happens with Carmen. The spoken dialogue is difficult for non speakers of French. But, trying to become as close as possible to the original, the dialogue was introduced again. Callas was not the only one who sang the Italian version. We have Sass, Jones, Farrell and a few others. I have a live recorded version in French with Jano Tamar. The music is most beautiful but the spoken dialogue is exhausting. Here comes my preference for the Italian version. It does not depend only on the singer but the conductor as well, to create the atmosphere and the individual characterization - Callas or Sass in this case. But, we have Cherubini without dialogue. The question is what each of us prefers. A few years ago, I found in Paris , a disc of Le Trouvere ! The French version of Il Trovatore. The version Verdi wrote for the Paris opera, including a ballet . It was recorded in 1954. Shall I say this is not Verdi ? No ! This is Verdi, from another point of view. Another perspective, the same as his grand works, written especially for the Paris opera/stage. But, I am so glad and appreciate the fact that we can discuss these points of view , especially about an opera almost forgotten but most beautiful and most influential, like the use of Leitmotif !

  • @treesny

@@mickyalexandru6894 The comparisons with Don Carlos and Carmen are not really apt. In whatever language you perform Don Carlos, all the music is by Verdi; personally, I find the word setting far better in the original French. And Guiraud's recitatives for Carmen were written not long after the premiere of the original, and so come from the same musical world. had Bizet not died suddenly at 35, he would surely have composed them himself. By contrast, Lachner's recitatives for Cherubini's work date from much, much later, definitely in the Romantic era, which oddly makes Cheribini's forward-looking music sound a bit old-fashioned.
