Note: Charlie Rich was a very talented jazz pianist in Memphis long before Sam Phillips persuaded him to cut some songs for Sun. Charlie had no investment in whatever "country " music was at the time this show was broadcast. No doubt he was impaired, as was his sense of humor, but whatever his motive, I doubt it had anything to do with objecting to Denver as not being "country" music.

Keep wondering what Charlie Rich would have done in 2024 at the ACM award show. He might have set the whole place on fire. Also two songs come to mind - Barbara Mandrell’s “ I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” & Alan Jackson’s “ Gone Country” . The one thing you can count on is change as the years go by.

Country music was going through a major shift around that time, just as it did during the early 90s. Some just didn't like the change, or singers who bridged folk and country music, like John Denver (another one was Gordon Lightfoot). But we know what happened to both Rich and Denver.

Charlie who? Did he do anything the likes of John Denver? Like most of the world, I couldn't name one Charlie Rich song. Just going and listening to some of these Charlie Rich songs. OMG, the best of them couldn't hold up against the worst of John Denver. Just bad regurgitated wore-out country vibes with bad production, even for his time. I see he even regurgitated himself. Nothing to offer and better forgotten in my opinion. In contrast, genre-busting stuff like "Rocky Mountain High", Take Me Home Country Road", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Annie's Song", "Take Me Home Country Roads", and many other timeless classics, along with John Denver's name will last for a long long time after Charlie Rich's relatively insignificant music is forgotten. Some people get popular in their own corner of a genre, few, like John Denver, make their own genre. He certainly didn't need a genre to claim him, nor any Charlie Rich recognition, nor the CMA for that matter.
