Country Music is simply NOT the same, now that the newer generations have gotten sober.

Note: Charlie Rich was a very talented jazz pianist in Memphis long before Sam Phillips persuaded him to cut some songs for Sun. Charlie had no investment in whatever "country " music was at the time this show was broadcast. No doubt he was impaired, as was his sense of humor, but whatever his motive, I doubt it had anything to do with objecting to Denver as not being "country" music.

Barbara Mandrell, Olivia Newton-John, John Denver…Then they shunned Sturgill Simpson. I guess they learned their lesson when he showed up at the awards show and busked for hours out front bc they didn’t say shit to Jelly Roll.

He was one of the old guard that gave Olivia Newton-John (who had won the many CMA awards the year before) a hard time when she began having her early hits because she wasn't from Nashville although he was quick enough to get her as his opening act the first chance he got. Hypocrite.

Too much has been made of this. John Denver and Charlie Rich were both GREAT artists. Charlie was just pulling a little prank after enjoying himself backstage.

Keep wondering what Charlie Rich would have done in 2024 at the ACM award show. He might have set the whole place on fire. Also two songs come to mind - Barbara Mandrell’s “ I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” & Alan Jackson’s “ Gone Country” . The one thing you can count on is change as the years go by.

In 1974 the great Charlie Rich won Country Musician of the Year. In 1975 he had to pass that award on and do you know to who? Mr. Sunshine on my god damn shoulders, John Denver! Yeah, can you believe it? Replaced by John fucking Denver! Well, I'll be damned if Mr. Rich didn't take out his lighter and light that award on fire in front of everybody right there ...

As a long term country fan, fuck Charlie Rich's drunken ass. I honestly can't think of a single song he has. I get that maybe this was his idea of a joke, but it's never come across that way. It's always come across as hateful and spiteful to me.

Country music was going through a major shift around that time, just as it did during the early 90s. Some just didn't like the change, or singers who bridged folk and country music, like John Denver (another one was Gordon Lightfoot). But we know what happened to both Rich and Denver.

FU Charlie. They did the same thing to Olivia Newton John. They shunned her. The people who shunned her was George and Tammy, Hank Snow, Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell. They were part of an organization called Association of Country Entertainers. They had secret meetings regarding people like Olivia and John. Shame on them.

Charlie who? Did he do anything the likes of John Denver? Like most of the world, I couldn't name one Charlie Rich song. Just going and listening to some of these Charlie Rich songs. OMG, the best of them couldn't hold up against the worst of John Denver. Just bad regurgitated wore-out country vibes with bad production, even for his time. I see he even regurgitated himself. Nothing to offer and better forgotten in my opinion. In contrast, genre-busting stuff like "Rocky Mountain High", Take Me Home Country Road", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Annie's Song", "Take Me Home Country Roads", and many other timeless classics, along with John Denver's name will last for a long long time after Charlie Rich's relatively insignificant music is forgotten. Some people get popular in their own corner of a genre, few, like John Denver, make their own genre. He certainly didn't need a genre to claim him, nor any Charlie Rich recognition, nor the CMA for that matter.

And in the end, John Denver was more "country" than Mr. Rich. Charlie Rich was part of the original "Nashville sound" bastardization of country music that Waylon and Willie rebelled against. He was the establishment. He was the invader. He's the equivalent of modern day "new Nashville sound" bullshit like Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean, formulaic pop music garbage that takes the working class for morons and shits on decades of actual heritage just to make a buck.

Id be lying if I said I didn't like a couple of John Deutschendorfs songs. But he was a poser. I feel like that is why quite a few of the old school country music boys didn't like him. Saw him as a carpetbagger offshoot. RIP to both John and Charlie.
