    That play was 1000% on Claypool, who ran a 20 yard banana route instead of a 15 yard out. Tyreek took himself out after the play before. Waddle, Achane, and others weren’t available to play. It was shitty… but it is also why they attacked upgrades at the TE and WR3-5 positions.

    Thanks for the comment. Terrible luck. Injuries surely took its toll especially late in the season. But there were times when McDaniel used sub-optimal packages when his roster was relatively healthy. I'll explore that in an upcoming episode.

    Mostert and Waddle were both injured for this game, as were all 3 interior starting offensive linemen. Achane and Tyreek can't play 100% of the offensive snapa, so when they needed to catch a breath that was literally all McDaniel had available to put on the field. My guess is that's a large part of the reason McDaniel wanted to spend a 4th round pick on a 3rd 4.3 speed RB, and why Miami signed players known for great separation at WR3 and TE

    Thanks for the comment. This is more about the Dolphins maximizing available talent than it is blaming McDaniel for players that were unavailable. He could have rotated his available talent better so that a threat is on the field at all times whenever possible. But I agree, the Dolphins went out and got more talent on offense to fix the issue. Hopefully, it will be a non-issue in 2024.

    @@MattNewton I understand what you're saying, but with Mostert and Waddle out, that left just Achane and Tyreek as the super explosive playmakers. It wouldn't make sense to start Jeff Wilson over Achane when Tyreek is on the field just so that you can stagger snaps so that one of them is always on the field. It also wouldn't make sense to have those guys run slower to conserve energy. In both of those cases you'd be hampering the offense's ability to pressure defenses with multiple dangerous threats, which is the whole point of their offense. The far bigger issue is the interior offensive line injuries. The offense as a whole was substantially less dangerous when they were out, and McDaniel resorted to a higher percentage of gimmicky run plays due to the inability to punish defenses with inside zone runs like he did in the beginning of the season. If Miami's starting line played 18 games together like Buffalo did rather than their top 3 guys playing just two halves together all season, the personnel used on any one play wouldn't matter. All 5 RBs played decently when the line was healthier, and Tua had no issues spreading the ball around when his pocket time wasn't an atrocious 1.8/1.9/2.0 seconds like it was weeks 16-18

  • @MattNewton

    @@smudgeous4068 The injures took a toll on the entire team down the stretch and the offensive line was certainly no exception. It affected the entire offense. But there is a reason why coaches never use injuries as an excuse. Because everyone has to deal with them. And I don't mean to change the subject (forgive me), but the defense was decimated as well losing Chubb, Phillips, Baker, Van Ginkel, Howard and others and they still performed admirably in the final two games of the season against Buffalo and Kansas City. I believe Fangio did a better job with a decimated unit than McDaniel did with his. A coach may be dealing with injuries (it's a variable that's impossible to predict) but he has to give his remaining players the best opportunity to succeed. In the playoff game, I believe the defense once again outperformed the offense and McDaniel got a lot of his guys back for that one. McDaniel has to do a better job across the board, but his use of personnel is a major one for me. Again, the good thing is the Dolphins signed more playmakers this offseason so it shouldn't be a problem in 2024, I hope.

    @@MattNewton I think the weather played a larger factor in defensive success for both teams in the wildcard game than you're crediting it. By the end of the game it was 50F "feels like" colder than 2022's wildcard game in Buffalo, which kicked off at 23F. Mahomes was playing behind the #1 pass block win rate O-Line facing a squad starting old edge rushers off the street and a secondary missing half of its starters, yet had 1 incompletion fewer than Tua and posted a sub-85 passer rating. Tua was facing the #2 defense featuring the league's best DT with multiple interior O-Line starters missing. KC didn't need to blitz to generate pressure so had more guys in coverage and did just fine against Miami's weakened run game. Achane had 9 yards on 6 carries with a long of 3. Mostert had a long of 8 but averaged 3 1/2 yards on his other 7 carries. Much like Mahomes in the Super Bowl in Tampa, Miami needed the O-Line to be healthier to have any shot at competing in the game. Their best skill players were hampered by some combination of bad interior blocking, playing while banged up (Mostert + Waddle both played but were listed as questionable), and in extreme cold.

  • @MattNewton
    @MattNewton5 күн бұрын

    @@smudgeous4068 I can't discount the weather being a factor, but both teams played in the same conditions. The Dolphins often get favorable weather conditions (advantages in Sept/October) at home but I've yet to hear a team say, "we lost to the Dolphins because of the weather in Miami." Speaking of Miami, the week 18 game vs the Bills was in Florida. That defense was heavily decimated. They lost additional players in the game. They forced multiple turnovers and even a late turnover on downs. But the offense couldn't come up with a crucial scoring drive in any of their 4th quarter possessions. I believe it's largely a coaching issue while I believe (I truly hate to put words in your mouth) you think it's an injury/player availability issue. I get your perspective. But I think the coaching is the main culprit. Every time the offense fails (KC, Buffalo, Tenn, Balt) it's because of injuries along the o-line. If that's the case, they should have re-signed Robert Hunt and acquired better, more durable players along the interior o-line. It should have been an offseason priority. They didn't, so it suggests to me it's not a priority for them because they think they can coach around it because of McDaniel's scheme. When KC lost that SB to SF, you know what they did? They made the o-line an offseason priority. And as you said, "Mahomes was playing behind the #1 pass block win rate." That suggests to me the KC coaching staff realized they could not overcome that obstacle and addressed it in the offseason. The Dolphins decided to add more weapons to work around the o-line. If that's their plan (a presumption, I know) they really have to own it if it is ineffective against quality defenses.

    2:07 Tyreek had to pull himself from the game, Waddle and Mostert didn’t dress because of injuries. Context matters. It’s not McDaniel’s fault the guys weren’t available to play. • @MattNewton

    Thanks for the comment. And of course, context matters. I am not blaming him for not playing players that are unavailable to play. I am only blaming him for when players are available and left on the sideline. I think Devon Achane should have been on the field when Hill left the game. He was available to play. Robbie Chosen could have used his speed to stretch the defense but instead he went with Chase Claypool? McDaniel's offense is built on speed and he left two of the faster players on offense on the sideline during the most critical drive at that point of the season.

    @@MattNewton In that area of the field, Achane would’ve been more of a speed threat than Chosen, who has more long speed than quickness. IMO, and I love Tua, but Tua, McDaniel, and especially Claypool are most at fault, since you kinda have to throw past the sticks there.

  • @MattNewton

    Agreed about Chosen and the long speed. But Chosen running a route up the left seam might have cleared out the left safety (who intercepted the pass) and given Claypool a chance at a one-on-one on the sideline. His use of personnel and play design on that particular play didn't do the players on the field any favors. But Tua and Claypool also executed poorly so I agree, they also share some of the blame. Tua has to double clutch or throw late we have a problem. The addition of OBJ, who can separate against man coverage will help. Jonnu Smith can also beat man and is a Y.A.C. machine. Mike knows what he is doing. With OBJ, Jonnu, Forreston,(they also love TE Hill) M. Washington, T. Washington, Ez-E and Achane training as a Wide receiver, look for a nearly unstoppable force in 2024. Barrios, I wouldn't buy a house in Miami just yet. Braxton, you may be the odd man out. Tua isnt a problem where the problem lies on the offense last season was many things. Dropped passes that hit the receivers in the hands and were wide open. The offensive line not recognizing the stunt blitzes causing Tua not to trust the middle (center Karras) of the Oline which is Tuas strength to pass from the middle of the offense. So that caused Tua to run outside the pocket not Tua not being able to see over the defensive line men and not because he doesn't see players that are wide open because Tua saw these things it was that a lot of the players who looked wide open werent wide open because they had a low safety and a high safety crashing into the receiver that was open. Tua knew the offense. He had his hands hand cuffed by them not giving TUA check downs. They wanted to see Tua fail (Gailey). All the injuries of all the starting receivers and Tua was throwing to practice squad receivers was a big deal but not to Tua because he moved on and didn't complain. Tua made those practice squad receivers better by throwing into their hands but still those receivers dropped the passes. That didn't bother Tua that hurt Tuas numbers by the receivers dropping those passes. Instead he is a positive guy and said common guys let's go (rallied them being positive) Tua has a very short memory forgetting what happened with the receiver dropping passes and the next play he threw to a player who would catch the football and was open. He drew competition to the receivers when he told the receivers if your not open I'm not throwing it to you and said it publically. That's leadership. Certain fans were cretiqueing Tua and while they were doing so Tua ended up being the 2nd best in the league throwing in tight window passes. Now the receivers dropping passes and being extremely low on the YAC was a simple explanation. The receivers were DEAD last in separation WHICH means as soon as they caught the football most of the time they were tackled right away meaning the defense forced the Dolphins to be a passing team because they took away the run because of the O-line. Sure Tua made mistakes some mistakes wasnt his fault because he had NO check downs. He read the defenses but couldn't get them out of that play because there was NO check downs for Tua. He knew the offensive plays but didnt know the check downs because they didnt allow Tua to have check downs. Now will be much different because of 2 major things. One is the Dolphins have receivers that can catch the football and 2nd Tua has check downs and by Tua having the check downs makes him more comfortable about the offense because he can adjust where the blitz is coming from. Tua clearly didnt want to throw Gailey under the bus until he made that press conference. You can judge Tua in those 9 games by a few things that are tremendously important. He knows how to read defenses and knows how to correct his mistakes on the field (the Patriots game is a prime example. With Tua throwing an interception in the front corner of the endzone. Then comes back and runs in not one touchdown but 2 rushing touchdowns why because he read the Patriots took away the passing game from Tua. The games against Denver and the Raiders those check downs would've made a big deal. Tua made big time throws in both games underneath to Gaskin in the Raiders game scored a touchdown and the big time throw to Parker where Parker tight roped his feet. In those games they took Tua out way to soon because of the playoffs they say I think its because of the media chewing Flores up by saying well you shouldve done this or that by Flores doing so there isn't any regrets nor questions from the media nor the fan base. With Fitz in the Denver game having all the check downs etc and he still threw an interception and we lost the game still says a lot in that game and we lost by a touchdown. The Raiders game they had the TE go in front of Raequan as soon as Tua went out and Fitz passes to Gaskin and the TE makes a key block and off to the races. Simular with the pass to Mack (he just threw it up and Mack caught it and the 15 yard mentality added on helped us win the game). The wonderlic doesnt concern me not one bit Marino scored a 16 and other Hall of Famers scored in the teens and low 20s still went to the Hall of Fame and won Super Bowls so no not worried about that.
