This is really cool. The magic here is that they didn’t have all those constraints of the rules we all stress over. It allowed their creativity to run rampant and it shows.

I can relate to how you feel because my first serious camera was a Leica M3 with a 1.5 lens. I love that combination and took it everywhere. Eventually though I borrowed my friends Nikon with a 50 1.4 a 28th 3.5 and a 135 2.8 lens And with that combination I just fell in love with Nikon. I liked being able to see my depth of field through the lens as opposed to a viewfinder or rangefinder to focus. The rangefinder was still way better for shooting in dim lighting because I could focus on a candle with that M3 where as SLR’s were very poor for focussing in low light. So certainly the Leica has its place. I like an SLR way better than a rangefinder. And now that the cameras are mirrorless which was the big difference between the SLR and the rangefinder that negates owning a rangefinder as far as I’m concerned and they have stabilization as well, I enjoyed your review. Glad you enjoy shooting film, which is something I don’t do much anymore although I still have couple of film cams Ieft that I kept. Regards Gerry

Lukas...couldn't agree with you more. I came to Leica 7 years ago from Canon, Nikon and Fuji. Fuji cameras are the closest I've come to the engaging enjoyment and understanding the ethos of Leica minus the deep deep menu system. Sure other camera systems of faster, more accurate face/eye tracking and autofocus performance, but for me the pure enjoyment factor and image creation process is missing. I will always have a Leica...not for. the bling but for the amazing images they make and the inspiration for me to take more photos. I have several sigma lenses 35mm f2 and 65mmf2; Leica 24-70 f2.8 and Leica 50mm f2.5 Summarit M. Keep us updated and keep creating memories through images.

I wanted to know something? For photo it’s best to expose 2 stops down to preserve the highlights. I used to use Sony and I had to expose 2 stops higher. For Video, do I expose two stops higher or two stops lower. And is that with setting the EV to -2? I just got sl2s so figuring it out

I like it, but my major issue is I am NOT willing to subscribe monthly for it. The germans, in general, have been obsessed lately with subscription-everything instead of just allowing for purchase. If there was a one time buy it price, it would capture my interest much more. I’ve used the free version and I do like it for when I only have my phone.

I can no longer afford to shoot with film. I use a 5x4 camera and shoot E6, the cost of shooting ten E6 images now costs £300.00. This leaves no room for error. If I shot 50 E6 images it would cost the same as the digital back I bought for my medium format camera.

Doing photos or videos is like any other business and i suggest to any one to treat it as such, yes is okay to charge low and yes is okay to do it for free (samples or collaboration) with other creators. But if they coming to you depending on the project then they gotta pay. If a real state agent came to you asking for free photos or a music artist and claiming that it will be good for your portfolio then is a BIG NO. But also cause am older i deal with better clients and reject BUM's or people who wanna take advantage, since they got away with it before they wanna continue to do so. At the end of the day is a TRADE, just gotta see the value of it. Thats why theirs people that suck at photos/videos but since they excellent at doing business they will always surpass you and get all the great projects with a good pay! Am pretty sure if you walk in and ask for a free cup of Coffee they will say no! is a business we don't give out free stuff. And if you say "but how do i know if this coffee or snacks are any good?" well you still gotta pay to try it. Look just be good in business and attract good clients. Me doing a video or shoot for a coffee shop i gotta see what i would get in return. cause at the end of the day how much is coffee and a muffin at the end of the shoot? less than $3. Views? the business just started, Helping a business? i help my friends these people are just strangers to me. And even my friends i charge. I mean damn they charge me when i need something in their trade. And these tools of ours are cheap to obtain, they get old or damage, and gotta upgrade eventually. Free work is not gonna compensate for all that.

Am glad they came out with this dummy battery it saves you from having a bunch of batteries. Now you can either connect it to a plug on the wall or a battery pack! and not worry about not having enough battery life. When i first bought my Camera i thought you could shoot by attaching a battery pack to the USB-C port, but then i came to find out it only! charges the battery, and to make matters worst it only charges when the camera is off. Am also glad that finally Leica lets you download video files to your phone. before it was nuts that i had to remove the SD card and uploaded to the computer. They late to the party with this stuff but at least is here. This new dummy battery is only Compatible with: Leica Q3, SL2, SL2-S and SL3 so far my guess future Leica's will be adapted to this as well. Battery code is Leica USB-C DC Coupler SC-SCL6

Knowing your value and worth is one of the hardest if not the hardest lesson to learn when starting out as a professional. And the embarrassment of asking for or presenting a fee can be a deal breaker for some people. My advice is to break down the work into chunks of time: so travel time and cost, time on location, time spent editing, cost of digital delivery etc. work out a fee or hourly rate you’re comfortable with and take it from there. Crucially stick to your guns. Clients will always imply they can get it done cheaper, so let them. Like you, I earn a good salary, so do work for free on smaller items to help out…. But anything more than a few hours and I’ll ask for a small fee to cover fuel etc and take it from there. I have a few clients that pay bigger for my services as they value it. But it’s taken a lot of graft to get there.

Thanks so much for this review. I’ve been a professional wedding photographer for 10 years now shooting Canon R as well. I just purchased the SL2 for personal projects. I used the original SL and a Q2 and really enjoyed both. I loved the “Leica look” I got from both. You have a beautiful family and home and I like your laid back and honest attitude. Would you possibly be available for a paid FaceTime once my camera arrives to teach me the basics of shooting video? This is something I’d really like to learn. Thanks so much man! 📸🌅✌️

When someone drops the "gear doesn't matter" line, I just immediately assume they don't have anything of value to offer. That's a stance used on amateurs. As a painter, I've heard for 30 years that "it doesn't matter what brush you use." Same shit, different medium. It absolutely matters what you use. We choose based on our task, preference, quality of kit, gut reaction, etc. They're all valid and combine to form the reasoning, the personal use case, which a particular piece of kit requires. But the most annoying thing... by far... is that the statement "it's not about the gear" is actually stating the opposite of what these parrots intended: it actually justifies the use of any particular piece of kit. They never, ever realize this and it's utterly hilarious.

Leica has a long history of making bad marketing decisions (M5 anybody?), some of which almost put them out of business. I'm guessing the investment here (the acquisition of Fjorden) is not going to destroy them. The damage to their reputation, especially with established Leica users could be significant though. I wish they had marketed this differently, as a quality alternative to existing phone apps, rather than a digital emulation? of existing Leica cameras/lenses.

Good job Lukas. Very interesting. When I think of the Leica I think of the classical rangefinder camera. The form factor of the Leica is so right-on. It’s easy to carry one on your shoulder. If it’s a dodgy neighborhood you put a jacket on over the Leica on your shoulder. When it comes to photographing with the Leica it’s direct seeing. You’re looking through an optical viewfinder. You are really looking directly at your subject. There’s no pentaprism, ground-glass and mirror to hide behind. It’s direct. Your photographs are direct. The Leica doesn’t intimidate people. It’s not a scary DSLR or mirrorless with a big pro zoom lens on it. I’m an old man and I find young people love seeing the worn black paint Leica with the brass showing through. “Cool” is the word I hear a lot. So. Lukas. I didn’t mean to carry on. Hah.

I grew up shooting film. All manual everything. No auto focus, no 20FPS. The camera is a tool. If you have not spent 10,000hrs with the same tool you will never really understand it. I have been using Leica for 30+ years. They have always does what I need them to do. I print my work, and I print up to 40"x60" and it does matter when it comes to the print. I know what I want out of my camera and lenses. The Leica cameras and lenses give me exactly what I need. Maybe not what others want or need. I used Hasselblad and Sinar with Rodenstock lenses for my commercial work when I was shooting for clients. All manual and all on film. Kodak E100G was my go to film.

for me getting a leica meant a couple things, it definitely wasn't a knee jerk purchase, I took the time to learn film, then digital, then back to film. I love rangefinders, I love older film cameras where you have to manually line up the image on ground glass. Maybe I'm just into slower photography rather than impactful moments. Out of all my cameras I've owned, the M9 was my fav, was it perfect.... no. However it did help me come to find that sweet spot in photography.
