Maybe you should slow down the video so that way you can be on "track" with the video b/c the video is leaving you behind 5 to 10 seconds. Especially in the early scene of the video.

The real reason Vito knew Fanucci had no real power is that the neighborhood hated him. Vito knew a real boss is respected and admired in his community, that's what gives him his power, and that's what Vito became.

I swear I never even questioned it. Nor did I piece together that Vito knew what a real mob boss looked like and that memory was ingrained into his mind as a child. So yeah, seeing someone take advantage of others under the guise of being a fearful, powerful figure would be enough motivation alone for Vito to take him out.

Fanucci is totally unreal. A one man mafia family pretending to have connections with the cops and a criminal organization behind him yet always walking around by himself with the same clothes. Threatening and extorting people all over Little Italy? In real life, a guy like him wouldn't survive more than a few weeks. The character was very well played but again, completely unrealistic since he was effectively begging to get murdered.

My Dad remembered a guy who used to walk around the Drive in Vancouver in the early 70's who dressed similarly to Fannucci. He put on a show, but never openly said he was connected. Then one day he got beat to hell (his friend was hospitalized) and disappeared back to Calabria for a few years. When he came back, the act was dropped and he would never say who beat him and why he left so quickly back to Italy. Rumours circulated, of course.

It was rationally obvious, but fear isn't rational. What made Vito different from Clemenza and Tessio was that he wasn't afraid, so Vito looked right past the expensive suit that was the one and only tangible element of Fanucci's con, and could immediately see there was nothing else there. I don't know about this "dark secrets" bit, though, Fanucci wasn't complicated, and his con was never going to last long. It was already falling apart when Vito killed him, a few days earlier Fanucci had been mugged by other youths in the neighborhood.

Great vid! I love Fanucci because he actually personifies the old american mafia presence which was just the black hand / tiny cadres of old men with shotguns who anonymously extorted other criminals who moved into the neighborhood via black hand letters or they'd get blasted crossing the main corner. Fanucci's gotten lazy and is showing his face, and his crew is probly a couple nasty old guys like him in other neighborhoods he has to call or they died of old age already. Corleone is bringing the next iteration which matches what it looks like in Sicily, a full time public operation. Ironically, in a historical context, those are the guys who become known for shaking down the neighborhood and threatening civilians :D
