    You sharing that you see yourself in Carmy and even straight up saying “I am Carmy” made a lot more sense. Up until then was confused as to why there was more tone policing for Sydney than there was for Carmy. I feel like when we see ourselves in others we also have more compassion for them. It’s easier to just explain or laugh it off. Like that scene with Carmy and Richie arguing. Even though they were being rude, sarcastic, passive aggressive and snarky towards each other, while putting Sydney in the middle of it, it’s just laughed off. To be fair though I believe that was their intention, for the scene to be comedic.

    The “keep the spoon, chef” comment was definitely a nice right of passage for a cook. It shows that your chef believes in you and is trying to help you in some way by giving you the tools/knowledge to get better. Exactly like the knife comment you made in the video.

    Hi Danielle! Love your passion in your reactions. If it helps, I think the full Carmy CV goes, culinary school in Paris, staging in French Laundry under Thomas Keller (real chef & resto), Ever under Chef Andrea Terry (fictional chef but real resto), staging at Noma under Rene Redzepi (real chef & resto), Fishes, then working in New York at Daniel under Daniel Boulud, “hear the music” chef (real chef and resto, then I think Empire under Joel Mchale’s character, which I think initially was meant to look like 11 Madison Park.

    yes thank you for this. the Daniel one took me a while to catch and not until i was editing (which sucks bc i kept conflating it with the french laundry). will now solely be referring to him as the "hear the music" chef 🥹 but ohhh did not know Ever was a real restaurant

    people say lee is a bit of an asshole but there is one thing people forget; at the beginning of the season Cicero reveals that the L in KBL the scheme Mikey used to give money to carm is lee. which means even after this fight and what he knows about Michael he was still willing to give him money to invest in his dreams. he might be a bit of an asshole but he loved him just as much as cicero or anyone else and he stood by what he said at the table that all he cares about is familiar support.

    I think most of us don't like Claire because she doesn't have any character depth aside from being a nice ER Resident. She's a dream girl for Carmy so he can run away from his problems and stop growing. Everyone's just saying she's great without giving us a hint of who she is. Her dynamics with other characters feel so awkward when she's supposed to have known them for years. She has no needs or wants of her own. It just makes her flat compared to the other characters they've created. Claire is more like a device for Carmy rather than her own character.

  • @stsamurai_
    @stsamurai_14 күн бұрын

    I agree - but that’s sort of the point of her character. She’s supposed to be a simple and a very easy written character because she represents Carmy’s stubbornness and obstinance towards being happy and slowing down his life/pursuit of achieving what he set out to do as a kid: start a resturant and become a world famous chef. In this chase he’s been in, he’s gotten so deep involved that he literally can’t remember the last time he felt at ease or content with what he was doing when he can’t cook, which is shown THROUGH Claire to be way easier than he thinks if he just slows down his mind a bit. In this season, by the end he’s also seeing through Chef Terry that he shouldn’t wait so long to give other parts of life a chance like she did, and also through his old mentor that such greatness in this cooking world apparently means being broken and bitter inside, which isn’t necessarily what he wants anymore. His traumatic past and childhood make him throw himself into his work and never look back at that sort of life because he thinks it could never give him joy.

  • @zoc.6922
    @zoc.692214 күн бұрын

    @@stsamurai_ But Claire isn't the only character that serves a purpose in Carmy's story. She's the only one we really don't know and that has no hint of a backbone. I wish this season, after their break up, we would have gotten to see who she is outside of him.

    Just a few things to help clear up some questions you had and also generally discuss the show so far: - Carmy meant that he left Sydney alone for the whole development phase of the restaurant, not just the friends and family night. - I think Carmy came back to the beef because he always wanted to open a better restaurant with Mikey because they bonded through food so when Mikey left it to him he felt a duty to trying to make it better out of guilt from being away. - Yes, most of us don't care for Claire, because of her lack of character depth and how she's very much a manic pixie dream girl who felt wedged into the show out of nowhere in season 2 as a device to distract Carmy. I feel like she's written specifically to be a representation of the idea of what Carmy thinks he wants, happiness without dealing with his trauma, rather than what he actually needs, to sit in his feelings in a way that healthily aligns with his goals. - The Syd and Carmy being platonic leads for the sake of them being platonic leads feels like such a poor reason for them to be only that. There are so many instances where seeds of them eventually being romantic are planted, notably Carmy only calming down from his panic attack in season 1 after thinking of Syd when thinking of Claire doesn't work. He also just definitely has more chemistry with Sydney and his scenes with Claire are just usually so...Boring? And I think it is intentional. Maybe I just love Ayo Edebiri as an actress and can't help but adore everything the people's princess does but I'd personally prefer to see a dark skin black female lead actually be represented as a realistic yet charismatic main love interest in a mainstream show than "platonic soulmates". That's a much rarer dynamic than the latter.

    Last season in episode 8 I really didn’t understand why Carmy was the only one who had to apologize while both Syd and Marcus just got a pass?? Like they both contributed to the causes of why everything went sooo downhill and then they straight up left in the middle of it and ONLY Carmy has to apologize… like make that make sense. But this season for sure Carmy is all over the place and Syd is right that he NEEDS to communicate way better if this is gonna last. I honestly don’t blame her for being a little “passive aggressive” with him sometimes cause I would be sick of his shit too lmao

  • @N01Famous
    @N01Famous14 күн бұрын

    the way i see it Carmy was brought up in a family that's very direct and aggressive and then moves on to jobs where people are just as aggressive and direct. meanwhile Syd is not used to that, even in season 1 she says that the reason she started her catering business is so that she could be free of people shouting at her. Earlier in season 1 carmy tries being direct and aggressive with her but he notices she doesn't take well to this method and she doesn't even take criticism well so he switches it up that is why he doesn't ask or expect an apology from her. Carmy might not be communicating directly but he is trying to make accommodations for Syd. considering that he is the one risking his own money for the restaurant and that Syd doesnt have much of a name so its carmys reputation on the line if the restaurant fails but he still treats her as an equal to the best of his ability. its a bit rude of her to be so passive aggressive most of the time because it feels like carmy is more accepting of her flaws than she is of his.

    Wait what? Syd constantly communicates her issues with Carm. They're trying to open a restaurant together and if one person doesn't have their head in the game then everyone loses their jobs. She might be kinda rude sometimes but if your entire livelihood depends on making this one thing work then yeah, there's gonna be some tension.

    not liking Syd is such a you thing. I really don't see how shes mean the way you describe... Carmy threw a system that he knew didn't work onto her when she was genuinely trying to make the place better. And as for "personal issues that aren't relevant"... they are. Carmy has barely been working with Sydney on the restaurant, especially the menu like he was meant to and spending all his time with Claire which has left majority of the struggle on Syd. Carmy isn't blameless and Syd's issues are valid. She's not perfect, no one on the show is, but she's definitely not the problem

  • @LifeofaQuinn
    @LifeofaQuinn28 күн бұрын

    yeah the more i’ve thought about it i realize i exaggerated it. and i did say i empathized and agreed with the way she was feeling. totally justified. but i still dont like the way she talks to him about the issues (or how she doesnt directly voice her issues and instead makes snide passive aggressive comments)

  • @alarias9927
    @alarias992728 күн бұрын

    both carmen and sydney can be mean and aggressive. carmen is definitely more like his mother. intense, domineering, abrasive, direct and verbally abusive at times. deep down though he just wants things to work and for people to care the way he does. sydney is as her old employer stated, impatient. she’s sarcastic (passive aggressive/indirect), and there are moments where she simply is just mean. but she’s also driven and ambitious and is just trying to roll with the punches that is this dysfunctional and chaotic situation. a lot of people like claire/carmy and claire together and want to see him happy. see him catch a break from all the shit. but its not enough (as we see in the finale). carmen has some deeply rooted issues and a relationship with/claire isn’t the solution. the goal shouldn’t be for him to be happy, because shit happens and humans aren’t happy all the time. the goal should be for him to be at peace. i see them as a couple as a quick fix for carmy. which is unfair to claire because (as much as she may want to) she can’t fix him. they introduced claire in this season for a reason (the drama/conflict it would bring). she is used as this sort of “manic pixie dream girl” that is supposed to show him he can have fun and be happy…right at the time where he is supposed to be building this restaurant with his partner. this restaurant and it’s success it’s what would make sydney “happy” and claire and carmy’s relationship seemly directly interferes with that. my question is do you care about /prioritize sydney’s happiness just as much as carmen’s? and if not, why is that?

  • @katshik2282
    @katshik228228 күн бұрын

    Real good points that i agree with as well. Of course i want Carmy as a character to be happy, i have first-hand experience with a similar kind of familial dysfunction and struggling to find my own confidence and peace because of it, however that means that i also understand the damage prioritising my own happiness over my responsibilities and the people around me's happiness can cause. Maybe because of the lack of depth in Claire's its easier for me to view her as a distraction rather than a source of happiness. But either way she wasn't healthy for Carmy and Syd's issues with the whole work imbalance thing made a lot of sense to me
