Simply something that cannot be “taught” - instinct. Frustating. The una corda should be stricken from the piano. It simply muffles the sound and too many pianists who lack listening use it. A pianist should be able to play a pianissimio that can he heard in any corner of a concert hall. Too few can. It is an offensive sound on any piano.

If she would only listen. She tend s to interrupt commentary by playing through it. No matter. She will not retain any of this.

This masterclass is excellent not just to the piano student, but to all listeners. When listening to a performance, Leif showed how to sing along to better feel the structure of the melody "deeeee.....raaaah.....raah....reeee..."

The Baritone is actually a Tenor, his chest voice is really good, he needs more release. The soprano doesn't have developed chest voice, and I don't think Netrebko is a good example for a young singer, Sembrich, Callas, Zeani, Tetrazzini are far better examples.

She shouldn't be singing coloratura repertoire to start with. Lol Idk why they couldn't find more interesting singers to be tutored

I think Andris needs to work on finding more warmth in his sound, but given the circumstances, nerves get in the way. And his pronunciation is good but there are things he can improve as well, like double consonants. The goal is vocal freedom to express the meaning of the words and intentions of the character, and sing beautifully.

We should be grateful to Leif Ove Andsnes and other world-class pianists who are willing to offer master classes. Its also noteworthy that in so many cases, the masters have to correct the mistakes done by students which involve the very basic principle or fundamentals of piano playing

Come cantavano i giovani 65 anni fa ?!

You can clearly tell you’re dealing with an incredibly professional singer. Renee Fleming is giving her full attention and respect to the students. It is so rare to find a Masterclass where the coach, in this case Fleming, actually takes the time to work even on the smallest of nuances. She’s being so true to the art. I love this and these students are so fortunate!

This was so hard to watch. A literal monologue for an hour. Absolutely no teaching was done in this video. The student was give 0 chances to try to apply any new ideas. And the only other playing was Mischa feeling the need to play through half of the Prelude. And it ended with him talking about himself for 38 minutes.

The soprano singing Adriana, was quite good, and sounded right singing the aria. The singers before her I agree were to light for the repertoire they chose to sing. Donizetti, Rossini, Bellini and Mozart would have been better choices

It’s amazing in today’s world that there are still teachers who don’t emphasize the richness of Chopin’s inner voices and harmonies, that there are still schools of teaching that only emphasize melody. I’ve always thought if one can’t play Bach Figues, Chopin will never sound right.
