A lot of new releases are meh. The covers are better than the books. I have theories as to why. I’m trying to slow down on buying new books and go back to older titles and browsing the library.

Thank you for mentioning some leniency for indie authors. So many content creators encourage indie authors to just hire an editor. If you can afford that, great! But it rubs me the wrong way to hear because, in theory, indie is supposed to be a space that more underrepresented voices are heard. So I guess underrepresented, as long as they can afford an editor? Not saying someone shouldn't be careful in editing themselves or asking for volunteer readers, but "just hire an editor" feels kind of out of touch. Also, yes. So many books are 400+ pages and there is no forward momentum. I'm reading a book right now that I realized I'm over a quarter of the way through and NOTHING has happened. I'm all for character-driven narratives, but I need the characters to... I don't know, drive somewhere.

2 years in and realize why there are hardly any black male librarians. And I am probably one of the more accommodating and inclusive people you can meet. It’s the passive aggressive low key racism that is super stressful and unnecessary. The gaslighting is real. They say DEI all day but are anything but that. But even outside of the color barrier, some libraries are just toxic in general with the cattiness and gossip. I’m honestly getting close to potentially leaving.

great reading plans. Question: how is AI going to help or hinder us book lovers. e.g. the use of AI advanced audiobook voices, speed reading, or authors using it to help write a better plot for instance.

As soon as I saw the cover for home is where the bodies are I knew it wasn't gonna be what I hoped... I haven't read it but books with covers that get me hyped from vibes alone never end up working it so sad 😭

Maid For It reminds me of a middle grade book I just read called Shark Teeth. Similar subjects and also deceptive in how heavy it got.

It's a scifi-thriller, not a pure thriller, but I didn't see the big twist in These Burning Stars coming. I'd actually thought the twist would be the exact opposite, but it was so much better!

I really have to admit I am old school and I prefer fantasy romance or even rofan to romantasy :( I mean it has been a subgenre that has actually been around a long, long time.

OMG SAME SAME ON GOTHIKANA. I gave it 2 stars but it was not a good read at all. It gave me the icks the entire time. However, the indie published book tells us what happened to the kids. SAME SAME on Spark of the Everflame. THAT ENDING.

I'll never understand why so many dark romances have terrible things happening to kids as subplots and then spicey time between the two main characters. The two do not belong in the same book. There are three I can think of off the top of my head with that setup. One I forced myself through to the end and I have regrets (looking at you Haunting Adeline). I will never be into the romance or spice of a book that throws such upsetting subject matter at me.

Have you read the graphic novel "Other Boys"? It's one of the looks-happy types that is really crushing, and based on a true story at that. Read it in my local lgbtq books shop and immediately bought it for my classroom after bawling my eyes out finishing it. A great book to emphasize reaching out to a classmate that may be struggling.

I did the Amazing Readathon in August 2023. It was super fun but it put me into a slump for a month or two afterwards. I decided not to do it in June to protect my reading life knowing that I would be on vacation the next month (ie right now.) A reading slump on top of jet lag just isn’t my cup of tea.

I had a very mid reading month in June, and like you I did the amazing readathon and i found it quite stressful. I did reread A wizard's guide to defensive baking by T. Kingfisher, which i love. And I loved Tender Beasts by Liselle Sambury.

I'm sorry that such a big reading month came out with so few faves for you. But I'm glad you liked Danez Smith -- I love their poetry too! My favorite book of June was The Deep Dark by Molly Knox Ostertag (though if we're not looking at graphic novels, then on a completely different vibe, Rat Bohemia by Sarah Schulman was my favorite novel).

(commenting at the top of the video, still watching lol, but i love talking colors) I agree, that shade of green DOES look great on you!! It might just be the camera affecting it, but from my side it could also be a bright shade of sage green 🥰 not quite as blue-ish as mint can be, and looks great with your warm gold undertones. "Duck egg blue" is in a similar family, kind of like powder blue, but a little more of a desaturated warm tone (just in case you wanted some very specific colors to look up when shopping around lol)

Yeah I've never been one for reading challenges because I only ever read before I go to bed and I'm just a very slow reader in general, but I do feel like I'm missing out on something from not being able to participate. I think there is a conversation to be had on reading just for reading's sake though since I feel like these days we are encouraged to read a lot in short spaces of time and the effects it can have on our reading habits, discussions on book communities and publishing as a whole. Also I'm not a romance person myself but you 100% sold me on Role Playing because online spaces are so hostile to anyone on the ace spectrum that it sounds like a carthartic read to have someone willing to stand up for their partner.

Yes I am actually a scholar and read and write for a living but I can never keep up with these reading challenges. I enjoy prompts sometimes just for help in deciding what book of something I already have or is already on my radar to read next but I’m not going to just race through a book for the sake of saying I read it.
