Obviously depending on the length of the barrel you're going to adjust your holster for the fastest draw. Or maybe a different holster to match the style of gun you're shooting. You should train for up close and hope for more distance.

He said he was cocking the revolver ?? WHY !? Learn the double action. It is one thing to shoot andttacking animal ...But if its a self defense cituation, and you automatically cock , It is way to easy to have an accident on single action. No reason ,especially when speed is needed.

I really like this test…the moving BEAR target. But maybe one step better would be STRAIGHT AT YOU, not to the side. Bear will come STRAIGHT AT YOU he will not be trying to miss. Step in the middle of that track…. It would be EVEN be better if you could rig it with sound so it stops the target…immediately when you shoot.

I was charged at dawn by a Grizzly, from 80 yards out, up at the Taylor Fork just outside Big Sky. The size and speed were absolutely "unbelievable"! (And I'm pretty used to bears in the wild). There is no time to think because, as the young guy mentions here, the adrenaline spike overrides every circuit. I trek a lot off grid and carry (2) cans of Bear Spray. (1 can is not enough. They will/do come back....). Anyway, been toying w/ the idea of carrying a 10mm or 44 on my chest as "back-up". So thank you all for providing this timely material....Excellent job!

Id rather have 3 hits from a 9mm than one from a 44! Its been proven a 9mm with proper deep penetrator rounds will work! Hell carry a 12 guage with birds head grip on your chest! Hell 3 in mag ammo at that distance EVEN #4 SHOT WOULD WORK

bear's charge at 50 fps, feet per second. What makes you think you'll have your gun in your hand when you get charged? what if it happens at night, hmm? Even in "bear country", you're many times more likely to be attacked by dogs or men. If youdont live in Alasska, you can't be attacked by a brown bear. If you dont live in Canada, you wont be attacked by a polar bear. In the lower 48 states,, only 2 have grizzly bears. MANY bikers are MUCH more dangerous/larger than the typical black bear. :-) There's a reason why they measure bear's SKULLS for the Boone and Crocket records. Big male bears can gain 200 lbs when fat for hibernation. That doesn't make them more dangerous. Most bears are juveniles or females and thus, sub 200 lbs, the great part of the year. They are hibernating for several months, So you're worried about nothing, folks.

Best scenario I've ever seen to demonstrate a bear charge. I think we need to rethink longer barrel revolvers. We always knew the semi autos had a higher rate of fire BUT...WOW, I think the longer barrel revolver is at a disadvantage, AND if its a single action, I dunno how viable it is beyond 1 shot!

As an Alaskan and AK hunting guide for 30 years you would get killed using any handgun against these large and dangerous bears and only the most stupid and ignorant believe a handgun is some bear cannon! I'm not even going to think on how many bears me and the clients have taken on with rifles from 338 magnums and larger that would have killed people with handguns. And a Hugh stupidity and ignorance is not knowing these handguns only have 1/2 the power of a 30-30 rifle and no one believes a 30-30 rifle is an Alaskan bear gun. The adult bears have 8 inches to 10 inches of hard fat over their body under the skin and these where we find the handgun bullets that leave pock mark scars in the fat.

@@lurebenson7722 My comment above for choosing a 10mm auto is only for a sidearm. For a bear hunting rifle I would not choose anything less than a 300 mag or 458 mag (and if legal in a particular hunting jurisdiction a 50 BMG) semiautomatic, with a few buddies similarly armed. I am a combat pistol expert who understands big game comparative anatomy and physiology and, I believe, if I had two or preferably three seconds and only one bear charging me, I would have no problem neutralizing a charging bear via head shots even with only an 8 round magazine high quality semiautomatic chambered in 10mm auto (probably a Sig P220 Legion DA/SA with a round already chambered and thus 8+1). But if I was in big bear country such as Alaska, I would always have a couple of experienced guys like you "riding shotgun" with me and with me only carrying a 10mm auto and my camera to take in the awesome beauty of such country like Alaska. I would be happy at that point to take your picture of you sitting on your neutralized man-killer bear holding your rifle as is customary for such lifesaving moments. Thanks for your help, Tom

@@thomasstevenrothmbamd2384 You are another one in a million now KZread knuckle heads who believe the 10 mm handgun is some kind of bear cannon with the power of a 50 BMG. Let me show you a 9 1/2 foot brown bear on the banks of the Alsek River SE Alaska that killed two fishermen, and they put 5 44 magnum bullets into this bear, and it didn't even faze the bear. Me and my client dug the 44 cal handgun bullets out of the bear during skinning and a federal park ranger came by doing cabin checks then looked at the bear and said I know that bear 2 years ago it killed 2 fishermen. I gave the bullets to the park range that sent the bullets to the state crime lab for ballistic test, and it prove the bullets had been fired from the Ruger Radhak 44 mag the fishermen shot the bear with. You have no personal experiences with these large and dangerous bears just bull shit you read from stupid ignorant BS . The bear my client killed that killed to fishermen the photo can be viewed on my Instagram account @ dwaynbe1959. You have the same stupid idea these bears are little weak timid animals not any larger than a Great Dane dog you can blast to bits with a little 10 mm handgun that has 1/2 the power of a 30-30 rifle that No one thinks is an Alaskan bear gun.

This would have been so much better (and representative) if done in dense vegetation as encountered in environments where big bears occur. Having worked all over Alaska, it was in the dense rain forests where bears were an issue and you never had anywhere near the field of view offered here.

If the bear eats me, I will just be giving back some of what I've taken for so many years. Even at 68yo am still pretty fast on the draw but I'm a lot more cautious and aware of my surroundings. Me and the bears get along pretty well together. So far!

This is definitely an important exercise. A couple of wildlife management studies analyzing bear attacks from N America up to the Arctic Circle learned that handguns are effective at stopping an attack around 50% of the time whereas OC spray was effective around 85% to 90% depending on species.
