for the trainbrains and transit bros: based on FTA government data, teslas are literally more energy efficient than subways using average ridership data. and it costs 30x-100x less than a subway to build. plenty of data out there but you don't want to look at it because you are in denial.

For all the uninformed people suggesting a train... Las Vegas already has a monorail system that goes from the Convention Center to the strip and all the way to the MGM at the other end. When an extra million people arrive for a convention all the infrastructure, including the monorail get overwhelmed. Taxi lines can be 45 minutes. I was just there for CES and it was a madhouse. These underground tunnels are an additional option, privately funded by the casinos, that supplements the "train" and street traffic. It's a cool experiment and I like that it's mostly privately funded. Why be so negative? Experimentation is good.

How is this not a way to syphon funds away from more efficient forms of mass public transportation such as trains, busses, or even the original hyperloop concept? While it might be somewhat "aspirational", it comes off as a grandiose pet project funded by hype and taxpayer dollars. Maybe Elon Musk hasn't changed much, but my perception of him has since 2020

  • @TrendyStone

They already have a monorail system. During conventions, capacity gets maxed out. I was just there during CES and we would wait >30 minutes for the monorail (which goes from the Convention Center all the way to the MGM). The Taxi line at the casinos was often 45 minutes long. They need more infrastructure to handle the flood of people that come to town during conventions. The roads are packed. Traffic is terrible. The Super Bowl a few weeks after CES was also a madhouse. Business is booming in LV and this "experiment" adds an option. It's a test...and so far it's awesome so they are building more tunnels to more casinos and the airport...and it's being paid for by the casinos. Experimentation is a good thing. I suspect your "feelings" about Musk are preventing you from being objective.

Mexican here. I'm not a fan of the current government but I do like this project, it actually has potential. One important thing to note is that the project is not just about the train, along the tracks they are building industrial parks. So it's not just about transporting merchandise from one ocean to the other, the idea is that companies can setup their production facilities along the way and have a way to export or import stuff from anywhere in the world (because of the 2 ocean access).

7-10 million trees were cut down for the project, as of today the current Mexican government (2018-2024) has planted 1,400,000,000 trees. The people that are still complaining about the ecocide are just looking for something to complain about, it's their AMLO derangement syndrome that doesn't allow them to see the amazing things that are being done in Mexico.

I wonder if they'll build up the railway on the eastern or western coast of Mexico. I forget which coast, but one is relatively the same elevation wise and it could connect to the US via train root to the Texas Mexican Railway International Bridge. This would eliminate most of the need to go across the canal to begin with.
