  Had to use this once. I was attacked. Slammed on my back. Dude was on top of me. Legs useless.. he was throwing haymakers at my head. Ground and pound. I turtled up. While remaining calm. Looking through the cracks. And when he was vulnerable. Thumb on the eye other hand gripping the Adams apple. While still using my arms to block. Because like a choke hold. Thumb on the eye while rotating the thumb to scratch the eye up and crushing the Adams apple.... The opponent can only last so long before they want to get away from you. They're so injured that they also don't wish to engage you again.. I was turtled up so hard I had bruises from my biceps in my cheeks. But he did get off me and when I was actually ready to square up. They were already calling the cops. Nothing happened to me. All defensive wounds. He was charged with assault. He lost. And he lost his carry concealed license. Don't be a fool

  As others have already mentioned in the comments, the jab has a lot of utility. Sometimes the jab is thrown for power - and often, it’s a penetration weapon, designed to create an opening and pick apart a defense. And depending on the sport or situation, such as in self defense, any punch thrown bare knuckle, or with small MMA gloves, will hurt. I coach fighters in bareknuckle boxing - and anything that touches ain't fun. But even with boxing gloves, Hector "Macho" Camacho was known to use a fast whipping vertical fist jab. I'm not saying this is the best or only way to jab - but, in my opinion, it is a useful variation to have in the toolbox.
