Hey Daniel, I just graduated 4 weeks ago and have been very anxious and stressed about polishing my portfolio and sending it to get into the industry, and watching this video has cleared my mind and made me realize its not gonna be easy or fast, so i will just keep grinding like you did. Thank you so much for this:)

Hey I have a question. Are feature film studios still using Photoshop for boarding, or have they finally moved over to Storyboard Pro? Adobe has been very bad lately, and I don't want to subscribe to them anymore, so I'd rather just use other software instead of Photoshop...
@DanielMtalАй бұрын
lots of studios are allowing storyboard pro now too! at least DreamWorks is. I'm not totally sure which studios aren't. In any case, your portfolio doesn't have to be done in PS even though you might need to work in PS while at the studio

No to Working Hard, yes to working smart. Many industries or businesses still have the slavery mentality of grabbing the most out of people in the shortest time. It works well specially when the industry is in downturn (high unemployment). That is when people's confidence is shaken. Two of my first bosses (Joseph Chen and Vafa Moshtagh - thank you both) told me to pace myself in different words. One told me a Japanese saying that went like "if you work too hard, you will have no time to make money"! That is so true. You can replace money by "paying attention to your goal and where you want to go". I tell my staff to take 20 minutes every day for some quiet time. Think about what you are doing and the way you do things. Is there a better way? Do you have ideas for to improve our processes? Can you eliminate repetitive and boring parts of your daily job.

Ok sooooo.... what does your week look like?.... what type of job do you have? Yeah... you just don't learn much sitting down once a week smh. Or I'm slow in the head. Sock of this type of content. Even if it's true. Only ppl with lots of time seem to have a chance.

your critique is so so insightful. I'm not a storyboard artist, but i'm learning so much about storytelling in general from this video. it's funny hearing you be so critical of your early work. of course it is a reflection of your growth, but even your earliest work is outstanding. thank you for this video!

I didn't think the original illustration was bad at all, but after seeing your updated version it's easy to see how much you've improved! The composition with the depth and perspective you added made the biggest difference! It was super cool to see how you block in the lighting, and I'm actually a big fan of the "cuter" style for the orc, I think the style hangs together and makes the whole thing feel cohesive, even if it isn't as intimidating.

I don't know if this will be helpful but if your character is on it's own layer... I'd turn off all the other layers except that one. Then on a new layer, I would fill in all the gaps in the outer linework(silhouette) with gray. Then while referencing all layers, magic wand the outside and then invert the selection (maybe decrease selection by 1 pixel if you're concerned about aliasing) and then just bucket fill it in.
