    Today is June 6th 2024 -- The 80th Anniversary of D-Day. I can't help but wonder if Col. Topf isn't hooked-up, waiting for the green light and the command to GO over some DZ in France right now? If you are, sir ... then, please accept a snappy Airborne Salute from an old trooper, back in the States. I am taking a moment to remember and thank all of those brave souls that made that invasion the sacrifice and success that it was 80 years ago! Airborne & Currahee, my brother!

    When i went through Airborne school in 1980, two of my jumps were out of C123 Provider's, about as close to C47s you can get in "modern" aircraft. Bumpy ride and loud as hell, ear plugs were required and definitely needed.

    This is probably about as close as I can come to knowing what it was like for my maternal grandfather when he parachuted in on D-Day. The guy from the 82nd Airborne on your plane makes it all the more so-that was the division Grandpa served in. I never got to meet Grandpa; he died before I was born. I feel a bit more connected to him now. Thanks!

    Enjoyed the Video. Understand it was a "Hollywood" jump - No rucksack, weapons, ammunitions, hostile fire...They showed current MC1 (steerable) vs T10B parachutes. Leaving from a C-47 you had a 5 (five) foot extension to the Static Line to clear the aircraft elevator. It appears they left from 1500-1800 feet vs 500 feet in Normandy. Remember, Pathfinders already on the Ground. My memories from 58 years ago. Go Army - Beat Navy

    A buddy of mine, canadian paratrooper, said he was having a few one day in the mess. Guy's counting their jumps in the usual pissing contest. One old guy sitting there with a paratrooper ensign. So one of the guys asked, "How many jumps you got?" Old guy, "one" "One?" "Yup, Normandy" Buddy said you could hear a pin drop. Edit: it was 11/11

    I doubt it! He would have gone to Jump school and had at least five. Most had more after for training before the jump. Good story though.

  • @graham2631
    @graham2631 Жыл бұрын

    @sidney topf well of course, he had more than one jump. As did all of the guys there. But only one that counted. Old guy probably decided to join the pissing contest and won hands down. I grew up with WWll vets and they played stuff down. Here's to Fred and all the pieces we couldn't find, that sort. I went to a private school whose chaplain was a conscience objector. He was a medic he jumped with a hawthorn stick that day. Edit: l do know that most just had practice jumps from structures mimicking the speed you hit at 18mph l believe. I wouldn't be surprised if combat was the first jump for some guys.
