I wouldn't be surprised if it gets worse. Look at auto racing in Brazil. They used to take home all the F1 trophies before the mid 90s. Now they are not represented at all on the world stage for a long time. Why? Simply put, economy tanked. And while hockey is certainly nowhere near as expensive, with our financial climate, I do feel as if hockey will dwindle in its popularity just as auto racing did in Brazil due to its out of reach affordability. Also kids, mainly immigrant kids, don't really care for hockey. They would rather play basketball or soccer due to media and ties with former countries. It's also infinitely cheaper of course.

Purposely sorting the price from high to low is a bit misleading. Yes, hockey equipment is expensive, but you don't need the latest and greatest to play.

A lot of hockey people have their heads in the sand but NHL marketing is so abysmal, the sport is slowly & unfortunately losing relevance with today’s youth. Even here in Canada where global ⚽️ & 🏀 are reaching kids with greater efficiency, especially kids of recent immigrants. If this is not corrected, the sport is on a slow path to irrelevancy.

I don't think the NHL should be too concerned. They've been saying Baseball is dying since the 1980s and it's still here. It's actually growing in popularity worldwide. And they've been saying the NBA is growing for decades especially with the younger generations but their ratings aren't great. So the expert's don't really know. They are just guessing.

On Saturday night the bars didn't fill up until after the first intermission. Why not? Because everyone stayed home to watch Coaches Corner. Don't kid yourself thinking the treatment of Mr. Donald Cherry hasn't driven away an awful lot of fans. And what was he replaced with? Woke lectures on alternative lifestyles. People are are just trying to watch the game. This results in the channel being charged . Also the wussification hurts. Nobody body-checks anymore and agreed to fights are an embarrassment. The game is not being played by farm kids who grew up playing on the pond. It is rich private school kids playing in arenas that taxpayers paid for but most taxpayers can't afford to visit. The new divisions also. Teams don't play one another enough to develop any new rivalries and the traditional ones were sent to other divisions. You are lucky to see them once or twice a year. And, and these people are not exactly the Harlem Globe Trotters. Something the "Skills Competition" painfully exposes every year. Why would anyone pay the ticket prices for what very well not be a very entertaining event that night?

As someone who grew up in Florida and Texas, I’ve never seen an ice rink until I was 19 when I went to Calgary for a trip. I say the sport isn’t accessible for many people in the states especially down south unfortunately. Other sports like football, basketball and baseball are just easier to take part in rather than hockey since it’s more accessible and affordable

They need a modified game for young kids that develops more skill thats more affordable too. Im thinking some 3v3 ( like street ball) on a small ice surface whether indoors or outside weather permits. To get younger kids touching the puck more. I think Canada makes poor efforts to take advantage of the volume of players that would want to get involved. If leagues want to attract the popular masses, they could to offer some kind of buyback program of equipment, where you could even rent it out per month have like a rolling inventory.

Cut player salaries .They should not make more than doctors. Cut ticket prices and concession prices. Cut owner profits. Raffle tickets to each game so all classes have a chance to attend games. Finally immigration dictates that soccer, ping pong and goat herding are Canadas future sports.

Considering how much tax dollars are spent on these arenas the taxpayers have every right to demand affordable ticket prices.

If people just stopped using the NHL as a baseline for hockey people would stop being clueless about it. There’s how many leagues just below the NHL in NA? like a bagilion. Go support truly local teams. And for the same cost as an NHL ticket, you and a friend or loved one can enjoy a hockey game of almost the same calibre going to other league games. There’s major hockey in every town.

Changing population = yes, but there are lots of inbred white purists in Canada. Professionalism in broadcasts? They can change this culture easily... but I personally can't stand the NBA / NFL's pre-post game interviews... it's difficult to decipher what they're saying on NBA on TNT. Your best point was costs... but it has always been an expensive sport. Plus, I think there's a tax incentive you get for putting kids through sports programs. Personally, I would look into it if I had kids because I remember how shrewd my parents were when I was a kid. I guess a missed point was immigration vs. Canadian women being so damn picky to Canadian men, being too terrified of financial burdens in a relationship

Good breakdown - it’s multi faceted. I’m a US parent with a kid playing hockey and the biggest headache is definitely cost but my kid loves it so we definitely forgo some things to make it happen. The immigration argument also makes sense - in the short term. The flip side of this is that since hockey is woven into the fabric of Canadian society it may just be hitting an adjustment period. Give it a generation and I can guarantee you’ll start to see some exciting 2nd generation immigrant hockey players come out of Canada - it’s takes time for folks to settle in and I would put money down that you’re going to be surprised at some of the kids who come up 15, 20, 30 years from now out of Canadian hockey. It’s actually a massive opportunity for the sport to grow globally with Canada showcasing players whose parents may have immigrated from non hockey markets. It’s one of the things I enjoy when taking my kid to tournaments in Canada - folks are welcoming and I think this will translate to future hockey growth via expanded demographic exposure as Canada inhales folks from all over the globe.
