I just came back to re-watch this and I'm tearing up at this. This is just a beautiful Christmas video from all the theatre production companies. Plus the Les Mis group singing at the end gets me every time. Makes me feel proud to be a musical fan after all these years.

This is fabulous and it's a shame you don't have a copy of Act 1 filmed in exactly the same way - static, showing the whole stage. Huge thanks for uploading anyway!

Na Young has such beautiful black hair, I think her Fantine would look better if they gave her a black wig. And since the grown up Cosette has black hair also, it would appear consistent as family trait.
@TheGeographyWatch Жыл бұрын
There is a reason that Fantine has blonde hair, which is mentioned in the book. In France at the time, blonde hair was the most prized hair colour as it was commonly used for periwigs. However, blonde hair is genetically less common than most other hair colours so blonde hair for wigs was harder to obtain. Also, those who were most likely to need to sell their hair for money were of course the poor, whose hair likely wouldn’t have been in very good condition due to malnutrition. This is why the prostitutes in the Lovely Ladies scene were gushing over Fantine’s hair, because it was long, blonde and in relatively good condition for someone of her societal status and felt they could make hefty profit from it. So yes, the producers of the show didn’t just choose blonde hair for Fantine for no reason. They wanted to stay faithful to the book and to the real historical context

Also, in Les Miserables, the lighting of the show is very dark and gloomy and unfortunately black hair would practically be invisible which wouldn’t work for Fantine as the cutting of her hair is a key point for her character. The audience would not be able to see this properly particularly those who are seated at the back of the dress circle at the top of the theatre.

@@TheGeographyWatch Thanks for the info. It's good to know that there's a reason for certain details and the team honors it. I've seen versions that cast little Cosette and big Cosette different race, or Éponine sometimes, or that they have difference hair colors when young and grown up, or that the cast of Fantine couldn't possibly have a child that looks like the cast of Cosette....these stuff would put me out of the play and storyline no matter how good these individuals sing.
