Why are you taking the retaining ring out that secures the heater assembly? You do not have to do that to replace an O2 cell. It’s easy enough to get the contacting spring in there without removing the ring. I’ve rebuilt like 100 of these and have never taken that nut out. Also, the easiest way to get the old spring out is to use a curved mechanics pick. The new spring can be put in there with your pinky finger and secured into the groove with a tapered punch.
