It's a shame the match was ruined by one of the biggest refereeing howlers of all time. Germany would probably have won anyway but it's disgraceful to have such a big match effected by such atrocious officiating. We will never know what would have happened if the goal had been given...

Kind of alarming how back then the quality of opposition didn’t allow England to progress, but now they can even with the excuses of "We'll improve in the next game" being trotted out after a bad performance. That Trinidad and Tabago game was almost a mirror of the Slovakia game bar it being a group game. *Oh yeah, the pundits and media blaming Ronaldo for Rooney trying to prevent Carvahlo from fathering kids and trying to claim England were the arbiters of integrity will never not be hilarious. The fact that Ronaldo's breakout season came after this is all the sweeter.

Fabio Capello was our best ever England manager (2008-2012) in terms of percentage of games won (66.7%. The next closest was Alf Ramsey on 61.1%), but Fabio only got us to the second round of World Cup 2010. Unless you count Sam Allardyce who had a 100% win rate from 1 game.

Man our squad now as a whole is one million times better. This squad had some fantastic individual players but there was no balance to the team. Gerrard and lampard didn't work together. Becks and Owen was past it by then. Rooney wasn't fit. Yes our defence were very good but beyond that there was no balance, pace or creativity. I mean Aaron Lennon and Stuart downing were in the squad! 2006 was far far from "the golden generation". Sven was clueless too. Brazil, France and Italy were way way better than us in 06.
