    Quick question. I have a very small leak coming from my oil filter. I noticed some oil around the filter when I lifted the car to do the front brakes. I cleaned it off and have been checking it on and off. Two days after I cleaned I noticed a small bit of oil is back. It is very small but it is bothering me it is there. I did lube the oil gasket before putting it on. I only hand tightened the filter. What did I do wrong? Is there anyway to fix it or do I have to do an entire oil change again?

  • @TerenceDIY
    @TerenceDIY2 күн бұрын

    It's funny you mentioned this. A friend of mind call me and said his car was leaking oil out of nowhere after getting an oil change from a known oil change shop. When I checked the car out, he did have a leak around the oil filter. I told him to take it back to them and he did. They told him, he needs an oil cooler or new oil lines and that it was not there fault. Well, I told him not to worry and that I will fix it. I removed the oil filter. Low and behold the rubber gasket had a small crease in it. I have seen this many times throughout the years. The oil was seaping passed the crease and running along the side of the oil filter. So I showed him a trick I learned when I was around 14. I removed the rubber gasket and flipped it unto the opposite side in which looked good. Once I installed it (a firm hand tightening), the problem was solved. He was blown away. Oil Express hires just about anyone so I wasn't shocked. With that being said, remove your filter and inspect that rubber seal. Instead of buying a new filter, flip the rubber seal onto the other side and reinstall the filter. Make sure you tighten pretty firm. Your problem should be solved. Let me know.

    @@TerenceDIY thank you for the tip/trick. I put the car back up on the ramps and really cleaned around the seal. I'm wondering if it was old oil I didn't get cleaned up after I installed the filter. When I say the leak is small I mean small. This morning it was about the size of a pencil top eraser. If I notice the leak again I will try your trick. Thanks again for all the help.

    @@TerenceDIY quick question.. When resetting the oil life you only need to do it through the dashboard controls correct? You do not need to reset it by pushing down the accelerator 3 times, right? I have the myChevy app and it is not showing the correct oil life percentage after the oil change.

    Question for ya are you supposed to put more trans fluid back if so where would it be located

  • @TerenceDIY
    @TerenceDIY4 күн бұрын

    If you did lose enough fluid whereas you think you should add some more, you can check the dipstick level ONLY when the vehicle is running and if it is low, then use a small funnel and add it there. That's where you add trans fluid. The dipstick is located on the passenger side at the rear.

    Thank you. Today I changed my front brakes for the first time. Unfortunately, I did break a bolt but was able to get a replacement at AutoZone to finish the job. When replacing the rotors I did add some anti seize to the back and I noticed some thread locker on the caliper bracket bolts so I added a little Orange thread locker when I reinstalled the bolts. I hope that was ok to do. I appreciate you and your videos. Next week I plan to start on the back brakes and knuckles. Wish me luck. 😂

  • @TerenceDIY
    @TerenceDIY4 күн бұрын

    You did a great job. As far as the broken bolt, it's pretty common. You will eventually get a feel for them and how much to tighten down even when you're not using a torque wrench. Once again, great job.

  • @franciatcho
    @franciatcho4 күн бұрын

    Thank you. The weird thing is I was actually using a torque wrench but it didn't click so I kept going. 🤦‍♂️ Was it okay to put the thread lock on the caliber bracket bolts and the anti seize on the back of rotors?

  • @TerenceDIY
    @TerenceDIY4 күн бұрын

    Anti seize on the back of the rotor? Are you talking about where the brake meets the surface or where it mates to the hub? If you use anti-seize where it mates to the hub, then that is fine. As far as using thread locker on the caliper bolts, that is fine as well. Those bolts are critical to any brake system.

  • @franciatcho
    @franciatcho4 күн бұрын

    Thank you. I used the anti seize where the rotor meets the hub (lug area). I only added the thread locker because I saw it already had some from what I presume was the factory.

    Ya, live and learn. You should've put some Seafoam in the gas and run them so it would get thru the entire fuel system. That way it will start after sitting so long. NEVER leave and engine sit will gas in it without treating it with stabilizer of some kind.
