I haven't seen the movie but saw Alex on a morning program here in Canada. Even knowing the subject gives me chills. Put very simply, the US is really in a bad way. Such a situation could very well come to pass. I'm not an alarmist but it's not a good time in the run up to their election in November. So many crazies in their government, even their courts. Not good.

Oh wow, that is bang on how I felt and still feel about the Duke leaving. It's amazing how dense the writers were to not move the relationship along...even Kate and Stuart were pushing for it. I think it marginalized the Duke's role and left Stuart in a very difficult position at a prime time in his acting career. The ONLY way the show will survive is if they entice Stuart back for a season 6 ...'after a year in NYC' and let them be together. They would have to tease us with that truly happening at last if they want to maintain the popularity.

Don't apologize for being a wee bit drunk. If I had anything alcoholic in my house, after hearing the news of Stuart Martin's departure I would also be a wee bit drunk! You expressed yourself perfectly. What you wrote is certainly how I feel. I am very glad that you mentioned the duty you believe the writers had to the public. How true you are. The writers of this show appear to have forgotten how this show managed to achieve the high ratings it has enjoyed. It happened because of very loyal viewership. I think it is accurate you say that most viewers loved it and got intensely involved in the chemistry between the two main characters. Without the Duke I will no longer be watching. It would be too painful to do so and I am sure the episodes will be dull and mediocre.

Hear me out: as a black or brown man, I understand the Ariel controversy. I don't condone any of the racism against Halle. Those bullies ought to be banned from social media for good. While I don't support ANY live action remakes in general (Mulan is the worst one and Fate the Winx Saga is a close second), the only hope I have for the movie is that it gives Halle more clout to do BETTER, exciting projects. But mythical creature or not, it encourages Hollywood to be even lazier than they already were for decades with its' "turn redheads black" casting. This is not exclusively an Ariel problem for me, but a problem for adaptations in general. Jimmy Olsen, Alicia Masters (2005 Fantastic Four), Annie. It'd be one thing to diversify the cast, it's another thing where you rarely see a character who's originally a white redhead played a white redhead actor. Screw Riverdale and Fate the Winx Saga especially for THEIR raceswap casting but also thank them for casting actual redheads to play Cheryl Blossom and Bloom. And every time we see a natural redhead play a role, normally in a tentpole project, it's usually a nonhuman role or they wear a wig or dye their hair. Redheads are apparently a minority within themselves but that's a whole other subject. Every single adaptation, every reboot, remake or reimagining ever needs to appeal to fans of the original. No exceptions, no excuses. And that applies to characters as well. Personally, I think an already established character needs to be the race, gender and sexuality that they were in the original source material. Even if they're straight, white and male. Race swapping is just as bad as white washing in my eyes. It'd be one thing if it's fanfiction but official adaptations don't get to have that excuse. It's even more frustrating when said franchise DOES have a queer character or character of color or both. I personally never liked the idea of changing a character's race, gender or sexuality. Nobody liked it when Mystique and Jughead got straight washed. So why are people excited when Cheryl and Toni became a lesbian couple when they were the most toxic lesbian couple I've ever seen? Never mind the fact they were straight in the comics! And after the creator died! There are some exceptions I would accept on "changing" a character's race, gender or sexuality. 1. The characters' creators give the writers permission. 2. Create alternate versions of the characters. Like doppelgangers from other dimensions. Or clones raised in different societies. 3. Create your own version of the character with a different name. 4. The characters' race or sexual orientation was never made clear even by the creators 5. Only public domain characters are fine to change up. I grew up enjoying Brandy's Cinderella because it felt less like leftover casting for bad adaptations or clickbait or gaslighting critics as racist and more like colorblind casting. With public domain IPs, anyone can do anything with that IP. But when it comes to franchises companies DO own, some of them are taken advantage of without the creators' consent. Otherwise, I'm fine with colorblind casting as long as the creator is involved somehow. For instance, at least the crew making Percy Jackson had the courtesy to let the author take charge of the production, including casting a black girl to play his white female lead, which makes me even more excited for the show. If these exceptions were made, I'd be tolerant to Ariel being black. But even if Clements and Musker gave their approval, I still don't care. Many have predicted that it's just gonna be another shot for shot remake that probably won't do anything different and even if it did, would go against not only the original story but even just common sense in general when it comes to storytelling to justify its' own existence. And from what I'm hearing about the novelization and spoilers from reviews, they did exactly that. Personally, I think it'd be better for Disney to adapt any African fairytales that would be a perfect story for a black Disney princess instead of turning established princesses into another race. They WERE making a live action princess movie called Sade that's been in development hell since like 2018. But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they were in the production of that movie, realized it would make less money than the remakes and decided to make The Little Mermaid instead. I know some people in the Black community will see this movie just to make a Black female led movie succeed at the box office, some even knowing it's gonna suck, anyway. But it definitely taught me that I should make more time to watch actually good Black female led movies more. I'm sure there are some out there that everyone enjoys watching, not just Black people, like Girls Trip. I wasn't interested in that movie at first because modern comedy movies tend to suck, but I'll put that on the watchlist for the critical acclaim.

Good review! I have a love-hate relationship with Steven Moffat. You summed up my problem with him, very succinctly. Good concept, poorly executed. Very often I say he "failed to stick the landing." I listened to a podcast with him and Dolly Wells and they seemed to think this was a very funny show. They described it as a sort of vicar family sitcom. If that is the case, he failed miserably by forgetting to tell half the cast. I do think it was meant to be a dark farce, but he didn't lean heavily enough into the social commentary or the humor.
