Panasonic Bicycles Virtual Museum

Welcome to the Panasonic Bicycles Virtual Museum channel on KZread. First of all, please be aware that we are in no way affiliated with Panasonic in Japan. We're an online source for historical Panasonic bicycle information with photos, catalogs and videos.

Our KZread channel features some of the bikes from a personal collection. We'll add more videos and content here as other models come and go through the collection.

As always, thanks for watching and for your comments!

Cheers!

What amazes me even more is like, who makes those machines? Can you imagine the cost of those automatic brazing and welding rigs? I mean, how many of those machines were ever made... How much did they cost... And how many bikes did they have to sell to hit ROI as a company. I wonder where those machines are now too. And that was the 70's probably. Ahead of their time no doubt. Even the video itself... The production. Crazy for the era.

I bought this exact bike in 1977 at Harvey’s Bike Hike and Canoe Shop in Eugene, Oregon. It was marked way down; I think I paid $180. The long wheelbase made for a very smooth ride. After a few years the candy purple paint started flaking, so I tore down the bike and stripped it, discovering to my great joy that I now had a beautiful, solid near-chrome silver bike. Sold it around 1985 for an insignificant amount. Wish I’d kept it, but you know.

I recently bought one of these that is 100% original down to the tires with only a few miles of riding and essentially zero wear. Debating if I will make it a rider or keep it all original as is.

Hello! What a beautiful & prestine bike! My son has a vintage National bike from Japan & it has decals of Mexico '66 on its top bar. In a light research we did, we read that before the company used the Panasonic name on their bikes, they stamped it with "National" underneath with a serial number... Wondering if his blue National bike is a pre-Panasonic model.

  • @PanasonicBicyclesVirtualMuseum

It could be. Or it could just be from a market where Panasonic was labeling them as National bikes instead of Panasonic. In some areas National was better known so it made sense to sell them under that brand.

Excelente video. No soy ducho en la materia, ya que recién tengo dos años que decidí montar bici luego de una pausa de más de 45 años. No tenia ni remota idea de que Matsushita (Panasonic) hacía sus propias bicicletas. Saludos desde Caracas.

Panasonic IS indeed still making bicycles. They left the U.S. market in 1989 but you can still buy a new one in Japan.

An update is due… what did you do with the bike? Any improvements? I really miss mine. As I said i in an earlier comment, it was the first bike I ever bought with my own money. I did a cassette change a few months after purchase. Also…. What size is the frame? I’d be interested in buying it if it fits my 5”8” height. :)

Sorry for seeing this comment months later. I wound up selling the bike here in Minneapolis area to a school teacher who lives in another part of the metro. He was very excited to get a vintage Panasonic so I hope he's been out enjoying the ride!

I have a 1984 Matsushita electric company (Panasonic) with a Schwinn head badge. A Super Sport model. Interesting mix of components. Campy record aheadset, hubs & pedals. Sun Tour downtube shifters & front derailleur. Shimano 600 rear derailleur. Dia compe side pull brakes and Tange double butted tube set. Great eclectic mix on Mavic G-40 wheels. Love it.

I like sealed bearings for commuters and some parts of mtbs. Old school cup 'n cone spin smoother and feel good in leisure and race bikes.

  • @imrevadasz1086

The adjustable cup'n'cone BB that I recently installed (using super cheap parts) actually feels far better under heavy load than either of the two sealed cartridge bearing BBs that I also use. Yes, it's a faff to maintain, and it does far worse in a spin test, but under hard load it just feels really nice.
