    I would love to see something like this done for the Anglo-Saxon period (specifically after the reforms of Alfred the Great and his successors (I.E. the ''Burh'' system)). I think it would be amazing to have numerous forts around the country from different time periods so we could explore the various styles and defensive theories of the various peoples who settled on this island throughout different periods.

    Pure speculation but im sure the artist of the column did what arist did best, depiction and elevation of the cooler, more distinct and unique armor vs the boring reality. After all it was sure as hell a Propaganda piece.

    And by the time they half loaded there musket the british would have shot 3 of them with the british built baker rifle from 300m away :/ even when they manage to load the weapons they had to run and close the gap of 200m between them and the british soldiers because those muskets can maybe shoot a range of 100m/150m it was actually pretty unfair because even if they managed to close this gap the british green coat rifles would normally run them back into the marching red coats about half a mile down the road.

    This is wrong. Many sash colours were used. Some royalists wore blue at times. It depended on the commander, not the side you were on.

    The uniforms of the American Civil War produced a similar problem. Both sides used a similar design and blue and gray look very similar while you're fighting in a haze of gunpowder smoke or the dim of twilight.

    During that time wearing the enemy's colors to infiltrate or none at all would have been considered military genius

  • @bruh-ni1fy
    @bruh-ni1fy5 сағат бұрын

    It would not be genius at all. You're still coming from the direction of your forces, your commander would be confused in trying to organize the battle, and since you're closer to your own artillery you'd be more likely to get shot by them than the enemy's.

    I would've thought they wouldn't be fighting unless absolutely necessary. The regular infantry would be fresh and waiting, when the sapuers got done busting their ass on the obstacle, and then they just get into line?! I'm assuming they wouldn't be the front line, or main assault, but I'd happily charge in first to give them a break, knowing those badasses are coming right back in behind you! I got chills a little bit 😬

    Did that also mean firing ranks passing muskets back to loaders? Doesn't that leave a lot of room for error, dropped muskets in the mud, firers or loaders suddenly finding them selves empty handed?

    Speculation on my part, but by the time of Trajan's column the legions were basically always outside of Italy and had been for some time. Even if laminar armour had been phased out, it may have still been how Romans in Rome imagined the legions. Plus artistically it differentiates the Proud Roman Legions (TM) from the auxiliary forces. Neither force was really made up of Romans or Italians by then but propaganda wise they would probably be seen as less forgien
