Respectfully, critical thinking about "wordy text," as you call it, and writing are very complex neurological processes that require skill building over several years. When 1 or more of the steps to the processes are circumvented through AI use, the processes gets derailed and the students' critical thinking and writing development become stunted.

I can see how a chatbot trained to only teach the right solutions can work, but what about higher education? When children move onto more abstract thinking, or where they need to show original thought, I would be wary of letting a chatbot tutor assess a student's answers.

It seems the point has eluded most of the commenters here--probably because most "instructional design" is not really very engaging, and doesn't elicit critical thinking. Since so much of ID is for corporations or organization that are doing it purely for compliance reasons, there isn't much real learning going on. Basically just a bunch of information and then multiple choice questions. The point is not so much to change the name but to change the default, mediocre norms of the vast majority of ID.

What platform is comparable to Talent LMS? It's most important feature to me is its ability to track the students time spent on a section in hours and/or minutes.

Hi Bianca, what do you think of iSpring LMS?

  • @lc3507
    @lc3507Ай бұрын

I realize that I am responding late to this thread, but I personally believe that Instructional Design is the more appropriate term. Learning is a process, a journey the student embarks on, in their quest for new knowledge. On the other hand, instruction is presumed to be in the correct processes and thereby taking away the right learning outcomes. Oftentimes, students "learn" incomplete or flat-out erroneous information. Hence, the need for a subject matter expert's input and evaluation of what the student should have learned as compared to what the student actually learned. In the end, I believe it is mostly a matter of semantics but if I were forced to choose the more appropriate term, its Instructional Design.

I would Instructional Designer because I don’t always develop traditional learning/training for process or system changes, as it may simply be a set of other resources, such work instructions, qrgs or procedural guides provided to end users. I would also think there is sometimes a need for an Instructional Designers and sometimes a Learning Experience Designer or for some projects both skills could apply.

As a student who has used both Canvas and Blackboard, I miss Canvas so much. It empowers student success and makes it easy to see what I need to get done in the order I need to do it. Using Blackboard has been an absolute nightmare and actively discourages students by being unaccessible and hard to navigate. Canvas wins in my book, and I plan to actively campaign for my university to make the switch.

Can't figure out what system is best for me. I'm producing hundreds of videos.suscribers pay at different levels e.g Free material Basic 30 videos a month Standard (more) Full (more) Educational (higher sum for group access). Are we looking at a LMS ? 🙏

I wouldn't think so. An LMS is more for education providers with complex admin and assessment needs. You need a platform that caters for membership models. Look at Mighty Networks, Circle and Uscreen www.uscreen.tv/

Canvas is just free for teachers to trial it. You cant actually run courses off the free version. Canvas Catalog is quite expensive and only really for institutions who want to sell B2C without enrolment lag time. If you are a small business or solopreneur you need to look at platforms!

Thanks Bianca, great informative videos. Thinkific is a good platform and we've been using it for years. Unfortunately we're outgrowing it because of increasing mandates in California. We're looking for a flexible and affordable muliti-tenant platform at the moment. If you have suggestions, I'd appreciate your feedback.

To me, instructional design is more appropriate, we should note that learning is the desired response, instruction entails setting-up of stimuli that can trigger desire response while teaching is the implementation of instruction. Instruction in education context is not only entail verbal command, it encompasses all stimuli put in place for learning to take place. Technology only takeaway/modify the role of teachers (content delivery) it does not take away the role of instructional design. Thank you.

Great video. One question though, I've already built my entire e-course (using Rise360), and can already host/distribute it myself. So, the ONLY thing I need an LMS for is to allow me to make individual usernames/password so that I can control who accesses my course. This seems like quite a simple need on my part, so I just CAN'T justify why I should be paying THOUSANDS of dollars a year for it. Are there any cheaper "pay-per-service" type pricing models? Or do I need to bite the bullet on this one? **sad face emoji**

Like you I don’t mind listening to AI but I am opposed to and AI head for now. Seems a bit fake to me. Maybe I’m a bit old school! Thanks again 👍👌

The learner doesn't care if the learning was designed by an instructional designer or a learning designer, so it's just semantics in the end.

Your music example does not take into account public domain, such as Canon in D, and actual copyrighted material such as Under Pressure. This is the same difference as common knowledge and uncommon knowledge; on must be cited the other does not. Thus, you misused the music parallel.

Hi Bianca, is there a platform or LMS that would work for a small business that would like their courses integrated into Microsoft teams? I'd like to avoid needing the staff to leave the Microsoft teams environment for third-party website to access courses. Ideally they wouldn't even need to register for the LMS separately.

This is just opinion right? Learning also makes it less specific which means you don't have to show effectiveness or measure specifically. Keep it ambiguous and you can keep making it pretty.

Teachers make the best e-learning designers; I agree.I remember a time when we needed an e-learning solution. We hired an e-learning designer (with a teaching background), but the project took forever due to the "storyboarding" phase we went through. It occurred to me that if my trainers had the skills to do the authoring themselves, we could have skipped the storyboarding phase. Those that did have the authoring skills and tools ran much faster with the project.

I'm sure you are going to have tons of views in no time, Bianca - good luck! iSpring must be a South African product? A Period is a time slot in the day dedicated to a subject. In SA we would ask "When is your math period?" or "When is your Biology period?" Must have sounded strange on the ears of the US exchange student visiting us.

@Bianca Raby Beyond the vocabularies based on what you've said and my deductions; 1. Instructional Designers - Linear approach without evaluation? but ADDIE as of of many Instructional (system) design model has EVALUATE in it, A role that has a foundational frame- work named after it, common on... 2. Learning Designer - Curators 1st, monitoring Enagemement, basically Curriculum writers, this is were what you called their creation covers, I'll say if you're designing learning without the experience, you a a curator not a creator per say and that's fine. 3. Leaning Experience Designer - Generalist; the full package that defines the essence of L&D standalone in today's world. they are incharge of brainstorming thinking for analysis, designing visuals and experience for attention and retention as well as the gamification strategy for engagement and completion rate and further more evaluation all along as the case maybe.

I prefer LED, turning the light on learning as a Learning Experience Designer. But, MIT uses Learning Architect. Others like Learning Engineer (Bror Saxberg founder of LearningForge). Instructional Design is the term most known, and IF it were integrated with ADDIE + Design Principles then = LED for all intents and purposes.
