I put the heltec on my roof about 40 feet up with an expensive antenna and solar to charge the battery and the device loses power about an hour after sunset and then does not come back in in the morning unless I reset it. I have a fully charged 3000mah battery with a 5 volt 6 watt panel and a charger in line with the battery. My next attempt will be to use 2 batteries in parallel.

If your LoRa settings are the same for your private channel, the public mesh will forward your messages no matter if they can decrypt them and not limited by the size of your private mesh. You can set LongFast as your Secondary channel.

As far as i'm aware none of the supported devices come with Meshtastic pre flashed direct from the manufacturer, you could possibly find a third party reselling them as pre -flashed, and I have just checked the Meshtastic docs and it does not list this device as officially supported, however this could be due to the page not being updated recently, i'm sure others users would know in one of the Meshtastic online communities

Question, I have one of these sensors installed on my Heltec v3. When on USBC power the sensor functions perfectly, but when using a 3.7V 5000 maH battery the sensor shows false readings. Are you aware of what would cause this behavior?

Honestly, given how cheap these antennas are I'd rather buy one than take an existing one and hack it. 🤷 Plus, an SWR of "3" is atrocious. Ideally aim for 1; commercial aerials seem to be around the 1.3-1.5, and (as I understand it) even a value of 2 is pretty bad.

For other frequencies and applications I would agree. However with Meshtastic/LoRa, while below 1.5 is ideal, 2 and even slightly above is quite reasonable, especially for shorter/lower gain antennas.

While i'm sure this module could be set up for simple motor control (upon receiving a message), for sensors you may find the 'Detection Sensor' module can do what you're looking for

I don't have the LongFast channel as my primary and I can still talk to anyone who does, even though my LongFast is a secondary channel.

As I understand it, using this method you will still be able to communicate with others using LongFast, however data such as GPS, telemetry and other data will be sent over your Primary (private) Channel

Simple and accurate! Just to add: Higher quality antenna means well tuned, and doesn't mean more powerful. You will run into issues with terrain and curvature of the earth before exceeding hardware capabilities.

I thought most antennas had 50 ohm impedance no matter their frequency, could you explain why there would be a mismatch? My knowledge about antennas is very limited and I would really appreciate it

Stop using Heltecs for solar! Get a RAKWireless device. One day for a Heltec, or two weeks for a nRF52 based device. You choose.

@@MeshAbout Nope, it's not $13, its more ~$20, and you have to add an enclosure, a power source and a good antenna if you want your node to be part of the network. And if you want an autonomous node, add batteries + solar panel. There is nothing cheap, let alone free, to run Meshtastic.
