@thatcameranerd, Good content. What about any recommended top handle and hand grip? 1. Pyxis does not come with a top handle. Third-party top handles + top plates are expensive, Any thought? 2 Can I re-use blackmagic's existing hand grip (from URSA broadcast g2, or URSA series). Thanks
I’m not sure if you can reuse the old one, maybe if the holes line up. I like the official one but it is pretty expensive. If you want a more budget option you could get a nato rail for the top of the camera then look at a cheaper handle maybe from tilta or small rig.
Awesome breakdown!
I would be interested to see also a comparison with Lumix S5IIX outputting BRAW
Just got the video assist a few weeks ago so I'll try and get a comparison done
Wow that guy looks like you mark! Great video it's nice to hear about which film gave them the best experience
Have you considered the Nikon Z8? I believe it shoots internal raw and Pro Rez..!
Great video! Liked the Komodo better in most instances. That being said, I own the S5ii and I noticed that there is a slight haziness to the Lumix footage. Is that what you meant when you said the ND has a "milky" quality? Or was it the result of shooting in Raw format? Just wondering because I am thinking of buying an external recorder. Cheers!
I got extremely lucky yesterday. I had my kit built out in b and h and will check daily for sales both there and other places. Came across the atomos shinobi for 139.99 USD on Newegg. Brand new with an optional 2 year support plan for 9.99 USD. that monitor retails for about 300-400 used and 599 USD new. I was extremely happy!
Love this man! 100 percent mine is the Dark Knight the "because he can take it" is first time I got up and started clapping! 🤣
Such a good review! Thanks for your work :)
How did you get the Cooke pancros to work on the Ursa mini 4.6?
All the lenses were PL and I had the native PL mount
@@thatcameranerd Thank you. I ordered the Black Magic design PL mount. Hopefully it works.
Blackmagic 6k is movie
color shift and it makes image less sharp?
Sony is cinematic, red is commercial
Thank you for the video. The BM 6k and Komodo traded blows as the best look. Sadly, the Panasonic suffered from over saturation and uneven tone in the dynamic range. This does not mean that the Panasonic is bad, there are ways to fix those problems. Also, if one is considering the S5II and you shoot a lot of video, buy the S5IIX. It can shoot RAW externally, as well as ALL-I and ProRes (no RAW). It would have been nice to see BRAW from the Panasonic in this test. I think the Panasonic results would have been better. The implementation of BRAW in the S5IIX is excellent.
Sold.
3 items I bought from Temu was a universal camera cage/grip, a 30cm reflector and a backdrop. The grip is probably the best overall, and the reflector us a good follow up (I kind of wish I got the bigger one). The backdrop feels cheap, but it's better than no Backdrop.
It does seem to be hit or miss. Some of the stuff was great for the price but some of the other stuff like you said feels a bit cheap.
Hi, have you tried the portkeys monitor? do you know how it stacks up against that?
I have I use the potkeys monitor on my Komodo. That monitor has camera control for some cameras which this monitor does not. I think overall I prefer the picture the most on the video assist, then the portkeys and then this monitor. Both the porkeys and the video assist are definitely more accurate than this monitor.
@@thatcameranerd Thankyou . Bit cheaper too. I overall like the idea of a monitor, but it is another camera thing that I am trying to not waste money on. I am only making marketing stuff for my business, so I would rather not spend a fortune on it, but at the same time, I am not a professional, so any assistance they can give me is an advantage, but I don't think I want to spend 5-600 on a proper fancy one. I am leaning heavily towards the portkeys. Just so affordable. It is a price where if I decided down the road I wanted a nicer one, I wouldn't feel bad for wasting too much money too. Thanks a lot for the reply
@jamesmcconnon2 I haven’t used the cheaper portkeys monitor but I did see they make one for a similar price. But I think if you don’t want to spend a lot on a monitor that has features you don’t need then the portkeys or this monitor are good options. Like you said it’s not worth spending a fortune if all you need is a bigger screen to see what your shooting
@@thatcameranerd 100 percent. Thanks a lot for replying. Very helpful.
Thanks for the review, I've not seen much of these lenses before. They look like a bargain!
One question no one can answer me on is. How many receivers can the transmitter run. Can i have a receiver for my director and one for a client monitor coming from one transmitter ?
I have checked the manual but like you said it doesn’t tell you. I’ve sent an email to ask so once they get back to me I’ll update here.
Hi, one TPmini transmitter can only be paired with one receiver.
Could you show us how your colour grading does? It looks great I saw the one you made of Lumix and I liked it a lot
Thank you. I believe I used Dehancer for that. www.dehancer.com you can use the following code for a 10% Discount: HELPIMANERD But they also have trial version if you just want to give it a try

Contrast and saturation are the biggest differences
The only thing is, I kind of agree with the Zeiss position with the new Nano Primes in that cinema lenses made for mirrorless mounts can be made smaller and ultimately are more practical for more shooting scenarios as a result. The only problem is that I’m just not really a fan of the Sony camera system.
That’s a really good point. For me I have no idea what camera I could be using 5 years from now but if you’re in the Sony ecosystem and your not planning on going anywhere then you could definitely pick up smaller and cheaper cinema lenses. For me the goal is full frame PL so I can use them on hopefully any camera I have going forward. But great point 😊
It's just me or the Lumix looks more cinematic??... I think, in terms of color sciense, Lumix are like on the Arri's way: cinematic AF!!! hahaha.... The Red has more detail in the shadows in the high contrast shots (like the kitchen shot), that means little more dynamic range, but it has more noise too. Anyway, in ideal contitions, I think I prefer Lumix... for me, color science are the most important thing
Does the camera comes with the handle?
No the handle that blackmagic offer is extra at around £198
Translation: Why I quit one "Rich People Camera Brand" and switched to another. Sounds about white.
Excellent Breakdown and presentation. It's a question I had for the longest since this camera came out. thank you! Also to my American audience I did a rough conversion into dollars from pounds and its around $5k ;)
Now they just need to release the thing 😂
@@thatcameranerd oh shoot your right 😂
Great overview of why PL is the way to go for a camera, the Mofage looks great, I've had my eye on one for a while!
I'm strongly hesitating at the moment between buying this camera or a used ARRI AMIRA, the Komodo X, or the new URSA Cine 12k. But my first choice was the ARRI AMIRA, I shot with it during a project (documentary) and I felt in love with this camera! it was so easy to operate and the image is just stunning!
The Arri cameras are really nice to operate and use, I think for me it’s just the size and price. With all the options available today it’s a tuff choice. I like the look of the canon c400 looks interesting
@@thatcameranerd You can get an ARRI AMIRA for $13-15k with low hours and a 4K license. It's almost the same price as an FX9 or a fully rigged Komodo X. However, I also prefer the size and weight of the KX ;-) On the other hand, upon reflection, It didn’t really bother me; it was heavy for sure (AMIRA), but in a good way. I remember having to run once with the camera on my shoulder, and the shot looked great! I think, it depends on our style of shooting and the type of projects we do. Personally I mostly do shoulder and handheld shots, but if you prefer gimbals, that's a no-go for sure. From my side, I mainly shoot commercials in a documentary style, music videos, and sports events. Currently, I'm preparing for my first true feature-length documentary (I've already filmed for other documentary directors as a dp, but this time I'm the director). I also have some short film projects in progress. I tested the Komodo and was thoroughly impressed. I particularly like the global shutter, which suits my shooting style, and the Red RAW capabilities. Moreover, it offers more discretion and can be easily used on gimbals when needed. I have an FX3 and FX6 right now; so I don't think I really need the C400 to be honest. When I do bigger projects, I rent cameras (mostly ARRI or RED), and I was thinking of getting one because, after a while, it starts to get pricey, when I think about the number of days I've already rented these cameras.
@JeanSebastienLEGER yea that makes sense if that’s the camera you’re renting. I think you also have the pick the camera that gets you excited to use it. I would love to own an Alexa mini. I used to rent that camera a lot but not so much these days. I think every DP dreams of owning an Alexa one day 😂
The colors on Komodo are AMAZING! just look at the greens shades
Really good price for this, might check this out.
i loved this what a great twist!!!!
Greta vid mark ! Looks like a great travelling tripod tbh!
If you have a small rig it’s perfect 👌
If you're using different lenses the test isn't as reliable as it could
I feel like I stole the camera buying 4 so cheap I sold them all and made $800 win win for people who didn’t get to buy it at the big discount
It was a great deal
I'm planning on opting for a refurbished Macbook Air M2 with an 8GB ram and 1TB or 512GB of storage than an expensive 8GB with just 256GB.
Dude go for 16gb ram is more important than storage but depends
How-to budget gear videos are definitely needed.
muddy shadows on S5 compared to RED
really loved the lighting in the thumbnail. Can you please do a lighting breakdown for that shot.
Great points about new lenses being released every month haha. But i guess the way it seems to be is just to buy what works for you and your shooting style and taste and just let it make you money, and not worry about it retaining value. I guess. The lenses look great, seems like a perfect match for the Komodo.
The main advantages of DZO Pictor set are the swappable PL/EF mount and the 16-bladed iris.
these are swappable as well, just 4 screws
Hello. Does anyone know if I can install this on camera BMPCC 6K PRO (EF bayonet)? The site says: (Please check clearance before purchase).
The 17-50 didn't work on many mount.. dsmc2, z cam, sigma mc21 adapteur, canon rf adapter.. and laowa don't want to refound me😢 it's a PL lens or mirrorless but almost impossible to use the EF mount
I know they aren’t made for full frame, but do you think the 17-50 would be an option for full frame, understanding that you’d be dealing with less on the wide end to crop out the vignetting. Asking for a new BMCC 6K full frame owner friend…
Yea I think plenty of cameras have good super 35 modes and I often just have my 18-35. I know a friend of mine was considering these lenses for that same camera. I think it’s a shame to not have something full frame but maybe the size and weight are more important.
@@thatcameranerd thanks for the reply! These look so good for the price. Keep up with the great videos!
@MarquelCoaxum yea they’re tuff to beat for the price. Thank you 🙏
That's why Tamron FE 17-50 f/4 comes in clutch for Sony shooters. It covers a unique FF focal range at a cost of only $700 and at a weight of only 550g.
It looks like they are in fact releasing interchangeable mounts on B&H. Plus they are FF versions of these Lenses just note the “lite” versions.
Could you please let me know which one is brighter - Kelvin Play or MC Pro?
I would say that the Kelvin play is probably the brighter of the two as its 10w vs the MC pro's 5W
what lens were you using on those same ursa shots? They look so good, lol
This was a magnificent camera review. The blind camera test was ingenious. You have captivated me with your style and presentation. Well done. I’m looking forward to more camera reviews from you in the future.
My biggest question is what is the color bit depth from the Pyxis SDI connection? If it's 10bit or higher, what's to stop someone from using a monitor/recorder to get a ProRes Raw image other than it's just UHD? If you don't need more than UHD, is this a possible scenario?
Everybodies wife look so unhappy doing these videos, even mine...
You can probably see the decline in her enthusiasm as the videos go on 😂
