columbia 1930

Most of this channel is devoted to older music being played on a variety of vintage phonographs/gramophones I own. I have a special fondness for the little window of time between 1927 and 1934 when a very special kind of music was being recorded, just after the advent of electrical recording, and before the world devolved into swing and big band. I do not hold the copyrights on these recordings and they are only being presented as examples of vintage records being played on vintage machines. I hope you take time to listen to some of these that I've discovered. When playing records with steel needles I always use a brand new soft tone only. I enjoy the immediacy of the sound it produces on a good non-electric portable.

    - - - - - - - I worked at Buzzy's on RT3 in Millerville at this time and recall there were 2 bands, Alabama County Home and a bluegrass band, this must be you. Any photos of the inside of the place? I recall watching an Elvis movie on the primitive projection tv along with the bluegrass band (who had 1 female member) after everyone left & we closed up. Friendly band members.

Don't know why There's no sun up in the sky Stormy weather Since my man and I ain't together Keeps raining all of the time Oh, yeah Life is bad Gloom and misery everywhere Stormy weather, stormy weather And I just can get my poor self together Oh, I'm weary all of the time The time, so weary all of the time When she went away The blues walked in and met me Oh, yeah if he stays away Old rocking chair's gonna get me All I do is pray The Lord will let me Walk in the sun once more Oh, I can't go on, can't go on, can't go on Everything I have is gone Stormy weather, stormy weather Since my man and I, me and my daddy ain't together Keeps raining all of the time Oh, oh, keeps raining all of the time Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah raining all of the time Stormy stormy Stormy weather Yeah ======================

Interesting that the narrator called the song… The Laughing Song when the title was actually The Laughing Coon as you can see on the record if you look closely! Johnson had other songs as well, one entitled The Whistling Coon… and though I appreciate the recognition I hope that my people will be able to see that this is yet another example of Blackploitation! He was not considered on the basis of his extraordinary talent but rather as a laughing and whistling “coon”… to be taken advantage of by the oppressors.

I was just shocked to learn this is a song. Being a redhead with freckles my Grandpa and Dad would sing 🎶 she’s got freckles on her but my she’s pretty” and that was the only Line. I thought it so odd and they’d sing it and laugh like they were teasing me. I grew up hearing it and now I find that it’s a song. I have no idea why they thought this was funny to sing to me but it always brought them laughter at my expense.
