The Grognard's Guide for how to drive away new historical miniatures players: 1) nitpicking details with an eye to show how much more you know 🧐 2) frequent and combative rules interpretation arguments 😡 3) bickering over movement and line of sight 😖 4) crushing a new player like a bug, and being smug about it. 😏 5) cold shoulder or silent treatment, and just being not very fun 😶 I've played at some clubs where one could argue these elements are actually the essence of their historical miniatures games; in some cases, even the primary source of "fun" for some grognards! 🤣

great to talking point - one thing I do in the 'shed' is meet the prospective player one to one off site before introducing them to the group. This way you get a sense of their personality and whether it will fit with existing members. Several newbies/existing players I have met in advance just wont fit the group dynamics. Some are just plain odd and quite frankly I would be nervous about letting them near my home ;-)

We host open games at a local shop for this reason. Once you see who they are and how they behave, you can decide about whether they get invited to a game in someone's home.

Your video made me chuckle because it reflects my gaming life completely over the past view years. I have been more reactionary than proactive due to the many changes in my life and the flux within our local gaming group. I still manage to be productive, but not nearly as focused as I would like to be. I always like being more prepared for everything but have gotten quite good at flying by the seat of my pants.

As have become more philosophical about projects these days, acting on the Plan can be for the challenge also particularly if it is self imposed. As for the analogue painting challenge hopefully Curt is visiting me here in France at the end of the month. My self I am thinking Napoleonic, barons wars or Dark Ages myself for the challenge and this time will be in Europe at least. Cheers Matt W

Discombobulation? Only the last three or so years... though it is getting better. Hobby stuff should be an escape from the stresses of everyday life. I (try to) feel no obligation to work on any of my various projects, so when I can grab a bit of time it's a pleasure rather than a chore.

I like to use appropriate music, especially when painting. During the game, Miniature Games distracts me a lot because the timing isn't right. In RPGs you can control this better. But I should try again. I'm motivated to try it again. 😊

I was playing a well-researched WWI simulation at a club and moved an armored car over a line of barbed wire when the author/GM interrupted to insist that I make proper car noises - “Vrrrm!” Years later that’s the only specific part of that game I remember, but it was fun

I have some wooden dice trays that I sometimes roll out for Chain of Command. As you the dice roll along it, it does sound vaguely like machine gun fire. Otherwise, I have yet to crush my opponents to the degree where they are driven before me and I hear the lamentations of their women...!

Mostly used ambience for rpgs, but will have some John Williams score running when playing legion. Used to have a small app on the pc called Atmosphere Lite for ambience, only had jungle sounds, but were awesome for that. Makes me want to game out the Vietnam War and island hopping in the Pacific. Wanted to write an app for it my self for years, but never got around to it.

One thing you mentioned in the video is that wargames are competing for attention with video games. I have a hypothesis about that. I think the popularity of RTS (real time strategy) games in the video game community shows there's already a lot of interest in playing (digital) wargames. The best example of this is the 20+ year reign of the Total War franchise, which includes primarily historical games. People play these games because it gives them the opportunity to play as great historical generals (or against them), fight epic battles, and make strategic decisions. The potential interest in wargaming is already there, I think, we just need to figure out how to tap into it. How do we do that? Firstly, we need to show people how playing a physical wargame with miniatures adds a visual and tactile aspect to a strategy game that you just can't replicate on a computer screen. Secondly, we need to show people a way to get into historical big battle games that's relatively easy, time efficient and budget friendly. To me that means armies in 6mm or 10mm scale, simple rules, and games that you can fit on a kitchen table. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

There are some excellent ambient sound tracks here on you tube. There is one I used earlier this week for the first time when I had a friend over for a game. It was a track that included a distant rumble of artillery along with some weather effects. I played it at a low volume as to not intrude in the game. But was cool to have some ambiance along with the game. I have previously used music but my opponent and I agreed that the distant roar of battle added a lot to our experience.
