    He was one of my menors in learning to fly fish. I loved to watch his show on video on the uss Oriskany during the Vietnam War. PS I learnedbto tie flies in Danang with the help of a young man from Oregon. I wish I remembered his name. Still tying and fly fishing today.

    You are correct on all points. Unfortunately the video was shot using a handheld camera (I think a smartphone) by the same person who also needed to control the canoe, so he had to keep shutting the camera off during the action. The footage I have is all that I have without additional commentary. That said, I am confident that the bait was a swimbait similar to the Keitech swing impact fat in either a 4.3 inch version or a 4.8 inch version rigged weedless on an EWG 5/0 worm hook. It may have been white, but I suspect it to be a yellow color. I shoot those baits myself and have shipped a supply to him so suspect it was one of mine but it could also have been an actual Keitech or some other similar commercially produced bait. This time of year in that location, the muskies tend to lie very close to the bank in wait for frogs and other food sources to jump into the water or swim by. We've found it most effective to cast within a few inches of the bank and bring the lure back along the surface with as much splashing as the tail will create.

  • @UPNORTHNY
    @UPNORTHNY13 күн бұрын

    Asked Don this morning about the lure. Interestingly, he got it at an Ollie’s- buying the last one at that store. After having success with it he went back and asked them about it. They were unable to tell him what it was really called or even where they got it. Go figure. Best I can determine is that it is a form of spinner bait with two small side spinners rather than a single spinner

    That particular day we were fishing mostly between 50' and 90', but last night we found them between 80' and 110'. I only started in the 80' range last night because I was seeing some baitfish on the screen as I was passing over the 80' mark on my way to 100' and decided to give it a try. Caught 1 at that depth and lost another as well as a couple of fish on briefly, then caught another at just about 100. For more information watch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pamIssSEorO7c9o.html.

  • @UPNORTHNY
    @UPNORTHNY23 күн бұрын

    Should have added that most of the fish are hugging the bottom so you'll need to drop the jig all the way and just start reeling up. If you've jigged for other species, you need to forget everything you know in that sense - in the three years I've been focused on jigging lakers, I have only seen one fish caught by jigging the lure up and down. The rest almost always follow the bait for some distance before they hit. I've had some that I watched follow the bait all the way from 100' down to 20 to 30' before they hit. If you want to talk further, you can email me - not going to type the address correctly, but you should be able to figure it out - trying to avoid robots recognizing it and sending me a bunch of junk. dswanson at upnorthny .com. Just change the at to the symbol and drop the spaces.

    As I’m getting older, I like your setup on that pontoon boat, looks comfortable and easy. Do you trailer it or keep it docked ? I know wind is an issue there, how does it handle rougher conditions ? Thanks Dave, nice work.

  • @UPNORTHNY
    @UPNORTHNY17 күн бұрын

    Hi Duffmeister6480, I keep it docked from late April (as soon as they raise the lake level) to around November 1 (when they typically lower the level), and you are correct about wind being an issue here. I'm on the west side of the lake and the topography protects me as it pertains to WSW winds through NNE winds. Anything from NE through SW does create complications in getting in and out of the hoist (dents in parts of the screen can attest to that). I can normally manage winds up to about 9 mph from the problem directions but don't really enjoy winds of over 11 or 12 for fishing (most of the time I'm spot locked, so the heavier winds (~12) make it kind of bouncy but not unmanageable. My fallback in case of winds coming up too aggressively while out on the water is to head to Dean's Cove boat launch on the west side about four miles south of me - a very protected cove that I could dock at during almost any kind of weather. Have not needed to resort to that so far. As for the set up, yes it seem to work find, but I have had issues with the Ulterra trolling motor (which is off of the boat at the moment) because it started shutting down after less than 15 seconds of operating time (second time it has happened). I bought a Terrova with lift assist as a backup and have been using that for the past month. The Ulterra worked well when it worked, but the Terrova is almost as good. Ulterra is now 4 years old and Terrova is 3.

    All ive been tossing this year is a 1/16 - 1/32 oz ball jigs with either a tube or grub in yellow / white. Ill drift fishbit off the bottom. Ive found those size jigs dont hang up on rocks like an 1/8oz jig does. Its been a banger year on micro tackle. Im talking 24" rainbows, 4lbs smallies, 10" pumpkon seed. All on the same grub.

    Never has it been an issue before. But this year ive come across about half a dozen cartop launch sites with people camping in them. Ive found a couple rough trailer launches where people are legitimately pitching a tent on the only wayer access fo the body of water. Or taking up a 2 trailer wide launch with one minivan to launch and load their canoe, when theres a canoe launch 30 feet away, with a sign that says canoe launch. Also have found people camping ON dams owned by niagra mohawk.

    Very good advice. Did a very similar day trip up a native brook trout stream in Vermont last August. Didn’t hydrate before well ,didn’t bring enough water with me and really didn’t study the topo map for distances .Extremely fatigued dehydrated and sore just like you were. You think we should know better after doing such trips in the past. But there are times I bring too much gear with me and come back to the truck with excess water and food. Planning ,planning ,planning is so essential. Love all your informative daily talks. Could definitely save someone’s life. Thx Don!

    You hit the nail on the head about Black Lake. Over-harvest, lack of conservation efforts, lack of enforcement, and increasingly poor water quality from agricultural runoff. The group Jim is talking about from PA has been going to BL for Pike for decades now. They post their reports each year. If you read them, you will see a significant decline in the size and quantity of pike they are catching. It’s such a shame. BL is amazing!!! It deserves to be better taken care of.

I just came back from your area, I was there for few days fishing was tough, fished, Mohawk reservation, waddington, grasee river.. I found this spot on grasee river, 1 feet of watter on a bend, caught like 20 bass in 1 hour, small and large , other than that.. no PIKE - and been fishing every day for 12 hours ... for 5 consecutive days.. and a lot of small mouth but only on the beds..
