9:08, 12:25: I don't think you're very good at rescuing. 25:00: Treating the sentient inhabitants of the planet as just another indigenous life-form is...something that I hope is setting up a theme instead of a one-off detail. Especially since Vic's conversation with Hon'lo has some white-saviory overtones. (Yes, even though Vic isn't actually white. 40:10: I feel like Vic should be more worried about whether the Ura is also controlling her body. 4:04: Is a group of dinos a pack or a flock? Is it a gaggle or a pride? Is it a herd? 13:20: Neat. I have no idea who any of those proper nouns are. 31:44: On balance, I'd say that one enemy is worse than one friend is good. 32:25: 2024 "Sci-fi writers stop conflating gender with reproductive traits" Challenge. Difficulty: Easy, in theory... 37:16: Hm, yeah. Were those humans taking their ADHD meds? As far as I'm concerned, the elephant in the room is the white savior undertones. Creatures of Ava seems to be a story about a technologically-advanced civilization coming to a primitive world to solve a problem they cannot even recognize as such-and they do it by using cultural appropriation to control the local fauna. It's the same substance as Jake Whatshisname from Avatar, just...less of it. Or more diluted. I don't think any of this is intentional, but I don't think that really helps. It feels like a game that was outlined with positive themes in mind, harmony with the natural world and respect for indigenous cultures and such, but also like the developers didn't think through the implications of the narrative and mechanics quite enough.
Yeah the white savior-y stuff I totally felt in certain parts, but something about the game wants me to give it the benefit of the doubt that they're going to go a different direction and do that sort of thing really well, idk what some parts of the presentation and the way Vic seems to really want to learn and such. I don't know if I'll play this myself but it feels like there's thought there

game looks cool but that seemed like a pretty step disjunction in drama level between opening cutscene and start of gameplay. The MC watches her loved one perisch and 5 minutes later goes "oh, cute animal. let's take a picute of it" with no real sign of trauma.
this seems like a much healthier version of palworld
& the whole world fits together in palworld pals & the world don't look the same

With all the Naam saying "the human" has returned, do they feel like all humans look alike? That would be funny as heck and a nice little inversion of the old "all these aliens look the same but just have different voices or colour of clothes" kind of representation we usually have

omg I'm so pumped to play this! I was interested in the beginning, but a little worried about dodging traps because I'm not very good at that kind of quick reaction stuff. but then when it flipped over to puzzle mode instead of just making you try to get past the hazards again?? now I GOTTA play! also love to see inspiration/mythology I'm not familiar with

I actually love that they didn't have to cram in a "universal translator" to explain interspecies communication. The alien is just like, "Like your language is hard? Pfft!"
I understand why you’d like that but it personally annoys me. You’re telling me that this completely alien species just happens to have the perfect vocal cords, tongue, and mouth shape to be able to speak perfect English when this exact combination is unique on earth? I don’t buy it.

5:21 Now I understand the Beyond Good & Evil reference. I'm just so glad that publishers like 11 bit studios exist, since they seem to fund a lot of good games. This was on my wish list before the video came out and I will probably get to it next month.

Is this the first cg trailer with actual voice acting? I quite like how there is so much frenetic energy going from scene to scene.
Maxing out your shield is VERY important. Fingerprint shield goes all the way up to 86, meaning you only take 14% of the damage to your stamina rather than your current 23%
Playtesting this style of games to makes sure players can't soft-lock themselves seems like quite a task, especially for a small dev team.
This series was sucha. joy to watch y'all play through! Love being able to see this game through fresh eyes, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
As someone from Tenerife, my heart skipped a beat when I saw Guayota in the title. I had never heard of this game before, I'll have to check it out! It's good to see a genuine celebration of the island's history among all the doom and gloom of the tourist apocalypse
I am still working on it, but decided I had come far enough to check out this video, and I think it's super funny that the thing that made me start deciphering it was guessing that the description of the stick was "It's a stick" and going from there

Oh god, I LOVE Dan tearing appart the bad writing in some of these sidequests! Especially since he usually is very kind and positive in his critiques of the games on this chanel, some of this came so out of left field :'D

What on earth is an arquebusier?
Think musket but spanish (I only know this because in my language "archibugio" means "confusing contraption" and the word survived xD)
An arquebus is an old-timey sort of long firearm, as I understand it, so presumably it refers to a gun-equipped soldier of some description. Like a musketeer, only with a different kind of gun, I suppose! (Tangent: Y'know, now that I think about it, isn't it strange how the characters of 'The Three Musketeers' mostly fight with swords?) Edit: armed with cursory-Google-search derived knowledge, I return! Sounds like 'arquebus' derived from Dutch (?) words to the effect of 'Hook gun', and seems to have originally referred to fortification-mounted (presumably by the 'hook'?) weapons which evolved into personal-scale ones. Judging by what that same cursory search found, muskets seem to have been the metaphorical 'Mk II' of the handheld version of the arquebus, maybe?
@@vdate "Arcabuzes" are indeed early firearms. Some of the early versions had a hooked "monopod" for support, as they were quite heavy.

"Minimal casualties! Woo!" - Things you hopefully only say when playing video games 😂 This game is super charming, and I REALLY like the "death" mechanic! The alternate puzzles are a very interesting idea and I love that you get slightly different information from solving each side. I'm super into it! What a cool game!
A good rec, maybe for a duo play a la Return of the Obra Dinn is a game called Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. One of the best games this year IMO
