The reason the Boston Dynamics one looks so cool is the proportions, the lines, and the almost human way it moves -- minus that bizarre contortionist thing it does. It's like a droid from Star Wars. Ignore the motor sounds and put some clothes on it and we may not even realize it isn't human. A new kind of Turing Test, I say! If a robot walks around in full coverings/costume, can you tell it's a robot and not a human? We can look at those "Big Foot" videos and see that it is obviously a human in a costume based on the way it moves. I think we are leaving the realm where that was once true of robots. Your robot looks great guys! Just not as big a budget, apparently. I think these fluid movements and contoured humanoid bodies are going to be an absolute requirement going forward, unless it's purely utilitarian and meant for the commercial / defense sectors only. Right now Boston Dynamics has that category in the bag and I want to see some other companies pull it off at least as well as BD. Good luck to you, guys! You could get one of the BD robots at some point, and choreograph a fight between it and this one, so that yours wins. Like, have it snap the limbs of the BD one with its strength or something, we would all enjoy that.

The Tesla & BDs Terminator is already dead - stick a fork in it. Why? The wrong robot for the wrong task. Elon & BD have this crazy idea that his Terminator will take the jobs from union workers who will stop paying taxes and go on welfare and everyone will be happy Hello - Taking jobs from humans is a stupid idea and will never happen Laws will be passed to restrain them from getting near human beings So, what is the right robot for the right job? Apple sounds like they know - an appliance for the home. Just like the iPhone is an appliance - it was never invented to take jobs from humans just to make life better for them If you want to see what the Apple robot might be - lookup evoBOT It has: no hands no feet no head no torso no pullies and cables It can move at 40 MPH can climb stairs can climb and descent 35-degree snowy mountains can carry 220 pounds can lift 143 pounds runs for 8 hours on a small battery pack that is switchable weighs 88 pounds and can easily be put into the backseat of your car a titanium foldable version could be carry-on luggage taken to a work site it uses its weight to move and not motors It uses 360-degree vision - it sees everything around it all the time. It uses LIDAR - it can operate in total darkness, blinding snowstorms, torrential rain, hail, and fog with no problem. It uses four brushless motors and no pullies or wires of any kind It uses its weight to move even on ice or up snowy mountains - the power to the wheels is only needed when its weight isn't enough to overcome resistance. It uses internal reaction wheels to turn so that it can turn on ice with no problem That's a totally different way for humans to use a robot to assist them and not replace them.

I would argue that good engineering is deceptively simple, but getting to that place where one can distill an idea down to its simplest form can take decades of practice.

If you had put this video out with a title like “we decided to replicate the movements of the new atlas with our robot”, my reaction would’ve been: hey, cool. That’s awesome! But instead, you phrased your title in a way that both downplays the achievement of Boston Dynamics and invites comparisons between your robot and Atlas. Bad idea. If the movement of the new atlas isn’t difficult, why can’t your robot move as smoothly and efficiently? Why can’t it walk and stand as straight as the new Atlas? Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you can do it well. The striking thing in the video introducing the new Atlas wasn’t really the moves that it made, it was the manner in which it made them. Your robot doesn’t move anything like Atlas, so it’s not very convincing to hear you say that the movement of Atlas is not difficult. Your robot can replicate some of the motions of Atlas, but not it’s movement.

@@uBreeze I agree that it's not exactly a match. Did the robot stand up in the same general way? Yeah. Did it make it look so easy that it's uncanny and gives us all Terminator vibes? No. There's still much to be desired. The bent knees and constant mechanical marching kind of kill the effect. With some work, maybe they can really achieve the same feat. I hope they can. I think what’s impressive is the agility & ability of Atlas to withstand error; Atlas is far more stable & less likely to fall over, because of this its range of abilities are also much greater. Still, this robot is more impressive than most.

honestly, that is the point of the new Atlas, making state of the art use of OFF THE SHELF parts❤❤, also NVIDIA is going to make bi-pedal bot building in garage trivial, as same as it happened with drones, from helicopter models barely flying with help of human intuition... to pretty much any flight characteristics drones made out of boredom, literally build out of junk, flying on open source model.
