Here is the hard truth of street playing. I’m forced to do it because live bars no longer exist in Vancouver. They’ve all closed down. Most of the people on the street ignore me completely. They think I’m homeless. One of the few pleasures I receive is getting a reaction from kids like this who are not afraid to show their emotions and react spontaneously to the music I am playing. I made her day and she made mine. I have not been able to play outside since 2019 due to busking being banned and then I had a near death brain aneurism in 2021. If this video moved you like it moved this girl, please support. I actually heard from the family of this girl and they were quite happy to see it on KZread. What a memory she will have! #zztop #busker #lagrange #live
I don't often see this, but when it happens it's always 99% kids that are doing it. Before they become jaded (age 8), they still have that spontaneous spark, that reaction to music that we all used to have. Emotion is no.1 priority and they express it without shame. If I could hire kids for my shows, legally, I would do it. Imagine being surrounded by these mini tornadoes during every song. It's the ONE thing that gets people to pay attention. "Awww, isn't that cute!" the adults say, smiling at each other. "Remember when we weren't zombies?"
I'm glad everyone is enjoying this video but I want to mention a few things.
1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver, one of the worst slums in North America. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and then had a near fatal aneurysm in April 2021. It’s likely that 5 years of stressful street busking caused my aneurysm.
3) If you liked the performance, please think about supporting me on patreon/paypal tip/bandcamp.
4) I'm a musician that writes his own music and has been doing it for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar.
5) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.

Most people only operate on a pretty low frequency level and can't appreciate others who possess a true talent and mastery of their craft. Full-time jobs, stress, cooked food, no exposure to nature, media saturation etc means people don't pick up on any of the subtleties around them, like the difference between an average musician and a master.

You are right and it’s not silly what you said... but I dance at home for exercise. I make up several playlists, put my headphones in and dance for 30-45 minutes. La Grange is a pretty hard piece to play. I love how the mom just stood back and let her girl jam. If she does that on the street, I'd be shocked if she doesn't do this at home. I'll almost bet this little girl's parents are always playing music for her. She's totally having so much fun and is so happy to show her love and skills dancing to this song. 😋😋😋😋

That little girl just GETS IT. And the guitarist is out of this world good. Hey - to all of the people on this thread who rave about this guitar virtuoso: Don't just walk by like everyone on the street does. Think for a moment about how this guy (he has a name: it's Robin) has spent his whole life learning to play like a god, and gets his reward two spare coins at a time, if that. In fact, he can't even do that now, since clubs have closed and busking banned. So don't just say Wow! Go to his website and show him you mean it by giving him an online tip or even be a Patreon. He's worth every dollar and more!

Some people "get it" from an early age, some people never get it. It seems to me that people who talk all the time, who can't stand one second not filled with chatter, just don't like music as it gets in the way of whatever moronic thought that they want to let dribble out from their lips to enlighten the world... GOOD for that little girl, and thank god for musicians who brighten the world.
