Zyxel Multy M1 (WSM20): A detailed look. Device, App and web admin of the WiFi meshing system.

A detailed look. Device, setup App and web admin interface of the Zyxel Multy M1 (WSM20) whole home mesh WiFi router system.
UPDATE: These devices are massively unstable and unreliable. I would like to say: Avoid where possible, buy something that isn't Zyxel for mesh.

    I was planning to buy a mesh system and, during Black Week, I found an offer for 69 euros. I didn't hesitate and bought it after seeing your video. I will use it in Bridge Mode because I want my router to manage the LAN for the voip phone. Thank you very much, your video was valuable also because there are many negative comments on Amazon. They probably don't know what they bought... :-D

    Beware Maximum number of Multi units you can use together is only 4. The main one will be used instead of your router.

    I've given up using the Multy in their default firmware. They are just too unreliable. Putting OpenWRT on them and using them as manually configured mesh nodes is rock solid.

    Currently £50 for a 3 pack. Was thinking of buying them and putting OpenWRT on. I know you did a video about the Belkin RT3200 and OpenWRT. Any chance of the same with these? I would just get a Belkin for easier install but can't find it for a decent price. Thanks

    Its possible.. my friend has done it. And given my recent experience using these units I'm really unimpressed with the Multys for their Mesh networking. It's massively unreliable and often impossible to get the devices to pair. OpenWRT will work great for them as normal routers.. but the mesh functionality would be lost. Keep an eye on my channel for a video about OpenWRT installation when I get around to making it :)

    Thank you for your detailed review. Is MAC address filtering available on this device?

    It does not look like it.. but MAC filtering is a terrible way to secure a network. MAC addresses are trivial to change and trivial to monitor over the air. Use a better way to prevent devices connecting such as regular password changes.

    I have a zyxel router, would the 3 act as extenders for my current router( as i belive you made the first one act as a router) thanks.

    No, these are their own mesh and can't use a router as the initial "point". Zyxel do have some routers with their own mesh nodes but a single mesh node often costs the same as the 3 pack of the Multys, meaning you may as well pay less and get more points buying the Multys!

    bought it for 40 euro today is it worth or should i cancel it (3 pack) what you think ?

    Depends how technical you are. If you want to reflash them with OpenWRT and configure your own WiFi repeating then keep them. If you are not technical then return them or eBay them. I suspect you can sell them for more then €40 on eBay?

    Hi mate, I’m planning to order it. Do you need a ZyXel router too? I have a FritzBox now.

  • @freename

    @freename

    No, it works with any other router. The first of the Multy will need to plug into the FritzBox. And worth selecting Bridge mode on the Multys once you've set them up.

    @@freename and as far as I know, all 3 devices will functionate as ‘access points’ ?

  • @freename

    @freename

    @@Hostaweb I'm not sure how they behave in routing mode. Maybe one becomes the main node and does the NAT/routing (the first one you setup). In bridge mode they are basically all just access points. Unlike the Orbi, the Multy are all the same hardware and there isn't specific hardware for the "router" and the "satellites".
