Suite for orchestra in E flat, Op. 9 (1890-91)
I. Thème varié [0:00]
II. Intermède polonaise [10:59]
III. Rêverie et Cracovienne [16:12]
An early orchestral suite by Polish composer Zygmunt Stojowski (1870-1946), written while he was living abroad in Paris, where he studied with Léo Delibes. Featured in Stojowski's debut concert as a composer, excerpts from the work were premiered in 1891 under the baton of Benjamin Godard. Hans von Bülow, the dedicatee of the Suite, also conducted it, and when Pyotr Tchaikovsky heard the music, he also resolved to conduct it in a concert featuring the music of young conductors, although his death in 1893 put these plans to rest. When Stojowski visited Johannes Brahms and showed him the score of the Suite, Brahms exclaimed, "Donnerwetter! Sie instrumentieren aber raffiniert!" ("My goodness! You orchestrate with finesse!") Edward Elgar, too, was very impressed with the young composer, and he programmed Stojowski's Suite alongside his "Polonia" in its 1915 world premiere concert.

I can live with it and revisit it. Being a listener, not a performer, it is a nice work.

Liszt appears to have been very impressed by this. If it's good enough for Liszt, it's good enough for me. Incredible piece.
