    It still has a range of 2K. Hahaha What do you think about SEAD-operations which kills air defence systems at 10K or more and radarsystems with HARM's over 20K or more. Gunsystems with a range less than 5K will never used in war against enemy air targets when they are not in controle, because they have only eyes by daylight to confirm it is an enemy target.

    When in Finnish Defence Forces, we "tuned up" the 23 which we call "Sergei". The sights originally had a Soviet battery and stuff, but replacing them with western ones made the sight vastly better. The firing pedal triggered too early, so it was adjusted to fire only when it almost hit the metal, so when firing sighting shots it bounced from the bottom firing usually only one round per barrel. That did not waste ammunition for sighting, and the boxes were then emptied to the actual target, if needed. And, as the barrels are meant to "jump rope" because of the front latches being intentionally loose, placing sand paper strips upside down eliminated the "shotgun effect" ,and it fired almost through the same hole for some distance. That gave our team better hitting % than is theoretically normally possible...

    Funny how these AAA are more worth against ground targets... In former Yugoslavia, there was a vehicle called BOV-3 that had 3x 20mm AAA. Did awesome in all Yugoslav conflicts, but against ground targets. Same with ZSU-57-2 In 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, guns such as these were used to make "Wasp nest". Basically, when an airstrike was incoming, a lot of these would open fire without aiming, a barrage fire over the defended area. That would make the attacker think twice due to randomness and shere volume of fire. Additionally, another tactics was that not all AAA would participate in fire from the start. There would be few places they would fire from, while the rest would just sit and wait. Once the pilot would determine the best approach path and go for it, suddenly the other would come alive and start firing with actual aiming. This was often enough to force the pilot to back up and give up the attack run. As soon as he would back up, those "extra" AAA would also stop firing. You see, the mission of air defense is to keep the object they are defending functional, not to shoot down aircrafts. If you do shoot them down, awesome! But not required. Also, they would often try to use systems such as these to shoot down cruise missiles and even air-to-ground missiles and bombs before they reach the target.

  • @peabase

    @peabase

    2 жыл бұрын

    Your claims about the ZSU-23-2 making a difference in the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia seem fanciful. Firstly, the NATO planes flew too high for the ZSU-23-2 to reach out and touch them. Secondly, AA barrages, even when laid with heavy AA guns, are of dubious value. Judging from WW2 anecdotes, their effect was mostly psychological, and more so in beefing up the defenders' morale than sapping that of the enemy. At best, the ZSU-23-2 stood a chance against drones and -- at least theoretically -- against cruise missiles. Maybe they were a factor in dissuading NATO from conducting low-level attacks. The US Apaches were held back and the attacks against Yugoslav armour were conducted from very high up, with very few hits as a result.

    Newest Polish version is know as "PILICA". Pilica is based on ZSU-23-2SP (twin 23mm guns and rails for PZR GROM or PIORUN IR missiles with Range up to 6,5km) that additionally has electric asynchronous brushless motors for all axis movement. Old manual systems are left only as emergency backup as the system will be used remotely (there is also portable terminal for remote control). The system also includes for each ZSU-23-2SP integrated optical head with color day and night camera, termalvision camera and laser rangefinder, IFF system as well as 3D L-band radar for battery. PILICA is using digital encrypted datalink allowing to comunicate with airdefence command systems like Polish "REGA" system. The system is transported on 4x4 lightly armored JELCZ 442.32 9 ton (15,6 ton max load) truck. One PILICA system consist of 12 ZSU-23-2SP's, command vehicle, radar vehicle, 2 ammo trucks, 2 maintainence trucks. Optimal setup allows to cover approx area of 350km2for one Pilica system.

    Look at the shell splashes 2:15-2:35. I counted 7 seconds before impact. I served in the US Navy on a carrier. We had a live fire weapons demonstration headed back from a war deployment. One of our destroyers shot 8 rounds out of the main 5"/38 deck gun. Can't remember how long it took for splash downs, but from our vantage point, they looked like they were almost to the horizon. On a clear day out at sea from the flight deck, I had heard the view of the horizon was approximately 12 miles. It's amazing how far artillery can lob those "heavy" shells. Can't imagine what the 16in guns on the Iowa Class Battleships must have sound, felt, and seen like!

    Inexpensive small drones and the use of swarms of them is once again changing the face of warfare. Anti-aircraft guns are far more cost effective for defense than missiles for dealing with this new threat to tanks, APCs, ammunition bunkers, artillery pieces, and infantry sheltering in trenches.

    Well thats what you call a GENIUS DESIGN... the sheer modernization, upgradability and versatility of the weapon system is huge... The weapon system was designed WITH upgradability and extensibility BUILT IN... Modernization potential was NOT an afterthought but at the core of the design... You can see this kind of logic in many, if not all Soviet/Russian weapons systems... Soviet Weapons designers of post WW2 era were vastly superior to their Western counterparts...no doubt about it. Also if you look at the logic behind Soviet/Russian military, it has a very systematic approach... they were designing multiple systems dealing with the same problem/responsibility but specializing in short-range, medium-range, long-range, etc operational regimes... Looking at Soviet/Russian Anti-Air/Anti-Ballistic missile systems is a great example... and they are the BEST in the world... Just look at: - ZSU-23-4 Shilka - 2K22 Tunguska - Pantsir-S1 - OSA SAM (9K33) - TOR M1/M2 - Kub 2k12 SAM System - Buk M2/M3 - S200 VEGA - S300 family with its many variants - S350 - S400 - S500 Prometheus (this is the latest and the most advanced ANTI anything that flies... can shoot down satellites, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic missiles, etc) *** there are many more other systems (like MANPADS) which are all dealing with ANTI-AIR and ANTI-MISSILE defense but its going to be a very long list... --- Now if you look at the American list of SAM systems, its very short: - MIM-23 HAWK (retired) - Stinger MANPADS - AN/TWQ-1 AVENGER (basically Stinger MANPADS mounted on Humvee) - MIM-104 Patriot (Patriot SAM) *** Thats it for American anti-air systems... very NOT interesting... Yes, there are NAVAL systems that Soviet/Russian and American sides have, but again, in the case of American NAVAL SAM its all based on SM3 variants and with Soviet/Russian, its a LOT more interesting and a completely different topic because with NAVAL systems you have special things to take into consideration and its mostly dealing with specialized fire control and radar systems and how that integrates with actual SAMs. And you can see the same thing in many other Russian weapons systems, say tanks... Russians have several fielded and operational tanks... - T55 (this one is NOT part of Land TANK Forces, but is actually part of the Border Protection Forces which have been reformed and restructured after the MAJOR MILITARY RESTRUCTURING policies in Russia in late 1990s and thus this TANK is mostly in storage, but has been revived as a kind of Self-propelled Howitzer system in the Ukraine war) - T64 - T72 (Main Battle Tank, huge numbers, over 10,000 on hand), T80 (Main Battle Tank of the Arctic forces, more than 2500 on hand) - T90 (Main Battle Tank, designed as the next generation replacement of T72 tanks... no accurate information on the number of tanks on hand, estimates vary around 800-1200) and their many variants... US has only 1 type of tank, which M1 Abrams and its different variants... - T14 Armata (Next Generation MBT + specialized Field Command Tank, designed to command other less expensive tanks and be used for specialized and highly sensitive missions... numbers on hand unknown, estimates vary 900-1800 out of 2300 ordered) --- Now lets compare that to US: - M1 Abrams (2500 operations, 3700 in storage)... Thats it, no other tanks in use... US does have their previous generation tank, M60 Patton, which is not fielded and there are only around 230-250 in storage... Thats folks... Now, i dont want to go over each type of equipment and compare and contrast, but the same story exists in Armored Personnel Carriers, Infantry Fighting Vehicles, MLRS systems, i mean Russian MLRS are awesome and very interesting compared to American... because America only has 1 type of MLRS just in 2 different sizes... M270 and HIMARS, M270 basically is tracked and has 2x missiles of a Wheeled HIMARS... Thats it... NOT VERY INTERESTING...

    If make a 4 person size of submarine(small), then this can be covered airtight when closed, then float if have enemies, nice right, if imagine about speed, just more propellers, then it will be lighter anyway to run from big submarines. If a tank corner have this, a big type(only): "an extra to normal tank"? The impact(recoil) looks only smallwheel is enough to hold it. 2 of this on 1 tank(strongest finished maybe) but should be the plan maybe: lightank, heavytank. Never seen a heavy type that can shoot to the sky yet. Maybe if heavy this to be 4? I imagine. Then casing of tank a bombshelter(maybe including this too: material upgrade).
