"Notoriously unreliable" is a bit of an overstatement. I don't know this model inside out, but I bet it only needs some fresh grease and perhaps correcting tension on some springs. But if you really think it's that bad design - why bother fixing it? Why not go with more convenient 4K you've shown before? This being said, fingers crossed it's a CLA kind of job, not a repair... Can't wait for the second installment and the difficult part of the job! Cheers!

Hi Luke, I don't think it's a bad design necessarily, but the truth is the early Z3 is more prone to slow speed problems than the Z3M with slow speeds under the top housing. The problem can also affect the Barnack Leicas with slow speeds (iii - iiig), which also have the mechanism placed in the bottom of the camera. Why bother fixing it? Well, it's such a beautiful old machine it would be a shame not to! I think you're right when you say the problem will turn out to be a CLA type one, the mechanism itself is no more subject to wear or mechanical failure than other, similar types, so fingers crossed!

    I own a Kiev and a Fed-3 now. I have a Fed-2 on order. Next up will be the Zorki-3 or 3m :)

Hello is it the same way in Zorki 4 to fix it?

It's similar, but the slow speed mechanism in the Z4 is under the top cover, rather than in the bottom of the camera, as on the early Z3, so rather easier to access. Thanks for watching.
